Songstress is one of many guests on ex-Faith No More singer’s pop album.
Even though he’s slowed down in his golden years, James Brown will always be known as the hardest working man in show business. And while Mike Patton’s not exactly gunning for the infamous nickname, he’s definitely been giving Brown a run for his money.
Patton — of Faith No More, Fantômas, Tomahawk and about 30 other deranged and wondrous projects — has to work. It’s what he does. In addition to running his Ipecac Records label, the anti-rock-star rock star’s been putting the finishing touches on the self-titled debut from Peeping Tom, his four-years-in-the-making, long-overdue multi-genre pop masterpiece.
Oh, and he’s also tracking vocals for three tunes that’ll appear on Massive Attack’s forthcoming seventh album, Weather Underground. The one song he’s finished thus far for the trip-hoppers “is like a really slow, dirty ballad with mostly acoustic guitar,” he said.
Plus he’s composing soundtracks for two films (one being friend Melanie Lee’s “Pinion”), he recently lent his voice box to the in-development PlayStation 3 game “The Darkness,” and he’s been writing material for the next Tomahawk LP.
And then there’s that trip he’s planning to Italy, where — with help from a string orchestra and a full choir — he’ll record an album’s worth of “my arrangements of ’60s Italian pop tunes, which should be fun.” He’ll also spend some time with composer Eyvind Kang for a collaborative classical choir piece.
That’s just the stuff he can remember off the top of his head. “You know, I always forget about some of the things I’ve done, because you do ‘em, and sometimes they don’t come out and … most of it’s almost like daily chores or something,” Patton explained. “You check it off your list and then it’s gone.”
And when your list’s as long as Mike’s, you can’t be expected to remember every little thing you’ve been involved with. Besides, the last four months of Patton’s life have been devoted exclusively to finishing the first of three Peeping Tom records in the works, which is due May 30.
“I’m overjoyed to finally have this out of my hair,” Patton said. “It’s almost cathartic for me — more than any other project I’ve had. These projects, they’re almost like problems. You have them on your work table and they’re really fun for a minute, and then you get sick of ‘em and you finish ‘em off and move on to something else. This one has lingered for a lot of different reasons.”
One of the reasons has been major-label trickery. “There were offers from major labels, and I made the grave error of entertaining some of those offers, and that cost me about a year of wining, dining, singing and dancing and ultimately, I was left holding my n–s,” he said. “And I deserved it. I should have known better.”
Plus, Patton recruited a laundry list of collaborators, sending tracks across the globe to have other artists add their personal touches. “It was a melee getting all this stuff back,” he said.
The initial 11-track Peeping Tom outing will feature a spate of underground and mainstream experimentalists, including Kid Koala; Odd Nosdam; Doseone and Jel of the Bay Area hip-hop collective Anticon; Dale Crover of the Melvins; Massive Attack; Gorillaz beat maestro Dan “The Automator” Nakamura; human beatbox Rahzel the Godfather of Noyze; Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs; Amon Tobin; Brazilian chanteuse Bebel Gilberto; Brooklyn’s Dub Trio; DJ Disk of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz; and rapper Kool Keith.
“It’s very streamlined, very slick — it’s a groove record,” Patton said. “I used programmers and producers from the electronic world and the hip-hop world, in some cases. If there’s a sound to [the record], it leans into those worlds. There are simple structures. I’m singing, there’s lyrics — to me, it’s a pop record. It’s something I’d want to turn on the radio and hear.”
One of the album’s highlights, Patton said, is “Sucker,” which boasts the pipes of Norah Jones. “It’s a pretty vulgar song,” he said, laughing. “You don’t recruit someone like that unless you … I mean, I had something real specific in mind for her, and I wanted to take her out of her element and put her in a new environment and make it exciting, and she loved it. She did great. But yeah, you won’t recognize Norah. She’s cussing her ass off. It’s insane. She’s like a cruel vamp, and it’s super sexy, hot and, yeah, cruel.”
After Peeping Tom’s unveiling, Patton said he’ll reunite with Nakamura to begin work on the second Lovage record — the follow-up 2001’s lounge-flavored Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By. He said there’s no word yet on whether Elysian Fields frontwoman Jennifer Charles would be reprising her role as the Cher to his Sonny, but discussions are ongoing.
And Tomahawk are in “go mode,” he added. “There are three or four tunes for the record that are done, and we’ll be in the studio by the end of the year. Most of the music’s based on old Native American motifs. It’s going to be a real quiet, strange record.”

Zeggen de (reggae) nummers Made A Mistake en Come Back Tomorrow iemand iets? Ik kreeg er gisteren mp3tjes van toegestuurd, het zou Peeping Toms moeten zijn maar die titels komen helemaal niet overeen met de echte cd tracklist. Dat het iets van Mike Patton is ben ik vrij zeker van....of is hier sprake van een verwarring omdat z'n stem er zoveel op lijkt (en dan die bandnaam)?

In 2 uur waren we vanuit Delft in Brussel gearriveerd waar we gratis in het centrum konden parkeren, aangezien het zondag was. Ideaal dus. Nadat we een shoarmatent hadden weten te vinden in de buurt van de Ancienne Belgique, waar al enkele tientallen hippie's en anderssoortig stinkend en behaard volk verzameld was voor het concert, begaven we ons met een volle maag het nette etablissement in. Van binnen was de AB strak en weinig sfeervol, en qua grootte vergelijkbaar met de 013. De zaal had net als paradiso aan de zijkanten balustrades van waaraf later op de avond de dronken kutbelgen dingen konden schreeuwen richting muzikanten (hierover later meer) en achterin was een verhoogde tribune. Voorprogramma was de voor mij nog onbekende Italiaanse band Zu, die met de aparte combinatie van drums, bas en grote sax (alt, weet ik veel, gewoon zunne grote) aparte maar wel gave klankexplosies neer wisten te zetten. Hier dus maar een cd'tje van aangeschaft. Na drie kwartier verliet het trio de buhne en reeds een kwartier later kwamen de 6 mannen van fantomas en de melvins het podium op. Ik zou de precieze setlist niet meer op kunnen noemen, maar ze begonnen iig met Sacrifice van de Melvins (van Lysol), om daarna redelijk de lijst van Millenium Monsterworks af te werken, met het verschil dat ze ook van Suspended Animation speelden. Een uur lang duurde dit perfect uitgevoerde spektakel dat bij te lange stiltes door irritante eikels werd beticht van oplichterij, want: "we didn't pay 25 euro's for silence". Dat klopt ook, want de kaartjes waren alles bij elkaar 23 euro, maar goed. Om heel eerlijk te zijn vond ik de nummers van de Melvins gaver om live te horen dan die van Fantomas, maar die had ik dan ook al live gezien. Na een uur verlieten ze het podium om nog een toegift te geven met Spider Baby. Daarna was het uit met de pret en gingen ik en mijn compagnon op zoek naar de auto in het doolhof dat Brussel heet. Dit had ik niet willen missen, dus jullie zijn allemaal stom dat je er niet bij was.

"Delirium Cordia", de tweede Tomahawk plaat, General Patton & The X-Ecutioners vond ik wel aardig maar niet bijzonder boeiend, en "Suspended Animation" viel me ook behoorlijk tegen. Terwijl ik die eerste twee Fantômas platen nog wel zo tof vond (en vind).
Als we verder terug in de tijd gaan moet ik "Adult Themes For Voice" ook vermelden. Ik hoop ooit nog weer eens zo enthousiast te zijn over een Patton project zoals toen "The Director´s Cut" verscheen.

Verder moet ik zeggen dat ik peeping tom wel leuk maar niet heel erg geweldig vind. Ook wel raar dat de gelekte demo's er dus wel inzitten... terwijl die dus al 6 jaar rondzweven het lijkt me een project dat iets te lang gebroeid heeft. Ik ben trouwens erg benieuwd naar de derde tomahawk plaat en de 2de tomahawk vond ik beter dan de eerste. Oh ja, die plaat met Kaada was er ook nog. Die is helemaal aan mij voorbijgegaan. Zal hem dan ook maar eens checken, als je het zo goed vindt.
"Suspended Animation" viel me tegen omdat er zoveel buzz (pun!) over was en er zo gehamerd werd op het cartoon-karakter van de plaat. Ik had een soort mengelmoes van Carl Stalling en metal verwacht. Wat we kregen was een onevenwichtige plaat die het fragmentarische aspect van het debuutalbum combineerde met enkele cartoongeluiden. Maar ik heb er geen spijt van dat ik hem gekocht heb, want de calendar uitgave is spectaculair.

Ik vond "Suspended Animation" wel grappig maar ik draai hem inderdaad amper. Meestal gewoon die andere Fantomas-albums. Hij is inderdaad iets onevenwichtig. General Patton & The X-Ecutioners vond ik niet echt boeiend. Die tweede Tomahawk draai ik echter wel met regelmaat en bevalt prima, net als die Kadaa & Patton.

Ik heb hem nu twee keer in totaliteit gehoord, en hij neigt naar mijn mening veel sterker naar Patton and The Executioners (hoewel veel uitgebalanceerder), het latere Faith no More genre (in sommige platen sterk terug te horen, vooral Mojo en We're not Alone) en zelfs wat van het popgeluid van Mr.Bungle - California, maar stukken minder geraffineerd en complex.quote:Op woensdag 10 mei 2006 20:34 schreef Summoner het volgende:

Wel vind ik dat er in erg veel nummers een grote nadruk gelegd wordt op de breakbeats en de diepe bassen. Had wat mij betreft iets afwisselender gemogen qua stijlen, maar het past wel in de sfeer van het album en geeft daarnaast het gevoel dat het echt een afgerond werk is, wat mij moeilijk te realiseren leek met die al jaren rondzwevende demo's.
Al met al zeker geen teleurstellend album na al die jaren, waarin het laatste Fantomas-werk voor mij altijd welkom was, maar uiteindelijk toch te experimenteel om dagelijks te beluisteren.

The album, due on May 30 on Patton's Ipecac label, features a slew of collaborators such as British trip-hop group MASSIVE ATTACK, rapper Kool Keith, human beatbox Rhazel and Grammy-winning singer Norah Jones.
The singer said he sometimes reminisces about FAITH NO MORE's good old days, when they used to tour stadiums with METALLICA and GUNS N' ROSES, but not with regret.
"They're good because they ended," he said. "If they were still going, they'd be the sad new days. It was really hard to spit the last record ("Album of the Year") out. I think it stands up to any of our others, but I was looking in the crystal ball and I could see where we were going. The best thing to do was to end on a good note."
Despite occasional offers to regroup, Patton said he'd never agree to a FAITH NO MORE reunion.
"Every four or five years, some Svengali who thinks he can change the world comes with a briefcase full of cash and makes a crazy offer," he said. "And it's not easy to (refuse). It would be very easy for some of us to rehearse for a couple of days, smile and cash the check. I'm not at that point. I got enough things on my plate. Maybe if he comes with two briefcases full of money..."

Ik heb dat optreden op conan o'brien gezien .. tja ik vond het niet helemaal hun setting. Maar opzich leuk ze speelde mojo rahzel was er en ik ken dub trio niet zo maar er waren een gitarist een drummer een bassist 2 turntable mannetjes en een zangeres De zangeres speeld ook nog viool.
Meneer patton zelf had een haarnetje en een wit pak aan ! De mix in de show leek belabberd .. af en toe zag je razhel dingen doen maar hoorde je het niet. Patton zelf zat er soms heel hard in en soms heel zacht ... maar het is idee was wel grappig. Patton was ook dansjes aan het doen (het leek of hij zn setje met effecten voor hem miste )

Ik heb dat optreden op conan o'brien gezien .. tja ik vond het niet helemaal hun setting. Maar opzich leuk ze speelde mojo rahzel was er en ik ken dub trio niet zo maar er waren een gitarist een drummer een bassist 2 turntable mannetjes en een zangeres De zangeres speeld ook nog viool.
Meneer patton zelf had een haarnetje en een wit pak aan ! De mix in de show leek belabberd .. af en toe zag je razhel dingen doen maar hoorde je het niet. Patton zelf zat er soms heel hard in en soms heel zacht ... maar het is idee was wel grappig. Patton was ook dansjes aan het doen (het leek of hij zn setje met effecten voor hem miste )
