Niet onder de vorm van een tsunamie zoals in Zuidoost- Azie. Geen supervulkaan die de lucht is ingegaan.
Ook geen verwoestende aardbeving die een gedeelte van de VS in zee laat verdwijnen.

Het was de orkaan katrina die voor al dit onheil zorgde.
Maar is da wel zo?
Orkanen staan bekend om rampen te veroorzaken, mensen hun leven en eigendommen te vernietigen, landerijen onder water te zetten.
Af en toe wordt een stad half onder water gezet en dan hebben we het zo een beetje gehad en dat noemen we dus een ramp.
Maar wat we deze week op ons bord hebben gekregen tart alle verbeelding en is bijna met geen pen te beschrijven.
Wat hoogsten een ramp had mogen zijn is uitgedraaid op een cateclysme. De metropool New Orleans is niet meer. De cultuur- metropool New Orleans is verdwenen onder de golven. Niet door de stormwinden van Katrina. Niet door de meters hoge stormvloed die uit de Golf van Mexico kwam niet door de machtige Missippi rivier.
Neen het kabbelende water van het meer Pontchartrain. Het kabbelende water van 'lake pontchartrain' heeft New-Orleans naar de fabelen van Atlantis gestuurd. Samen met haar bevolking en de vreselijke taferelen die daarmee gepaard gaan.

Let vooral hoe zij de storm hebben ingeschat en vergelijk dat met de berichtgeving die wij toen kregen. In het begin hadden velen het gevoel dat het nog dik was meegevallen. niets was minder waar natuurrlijk.

Dienstverlenende bedrijven voor de olie- en gasindustrie slepen contracten binnen voor de reparatie van boorplatforms voor de kust van de staten Mississippi en Louisiana. Vastgoedondernemers en verhuurders van kantoorruimte hebben hun klantenkring sterk kunnen uitbreiden omdat veel bedrijven uit New Orleans tijdelijk hun werkzaamheden in Houston willen voortzetten.
Houston is met een inwonertal van ruim vier miljoen de grootste stad in het zuiden van de VS en het centrum van de energie-industrie. De haven van de stad is een van de drukste van de Verenigde Staten.
Maar ook middenstanders hebben hun omzet zien stijgen. Onder meer doe-het-zelfzaken en ijzerwinkels hebben te maken met een toeloop van klanten. Ook benzinestations in de regio verkopen meer brandstof aan inwoners uit de getroffen staten.

They discovered one, I think it was in Puerto Rico or in Cuba there somewhere, which they predicted would errupt within ten years. If this happends, a huge wave would be launched and would wipe out whole of Long Island and offcourse other parts of America, but that doesnt really interest me... I know.. I am a horrible person. If someone would know more about this, I would be very greatful if they would put it down here. For the rest I will be following this topic with great interest. Onderschat echter niet de kracht van de zon.
Gelukkig is er het electromagnetisch veld van de aarde om ons te beschermen.
anders waren we hier niet meer.
Opmerkelijk is toch dat we ons nu in een cyclus bevinden waarin de zon minimum activiteit zou moeten vertonen. Een periode die begon in 2000 en eindigt in 2011. De maximum cyclus begint in 2012.
Echter de zon trekt zich daar blijkbaar niet veel van aan.
Waarom en hoe dat komt weet ik niet mss weet iemand anders het ?

About 75 million Americans in 39 states face a significant risk from a strong earthquake. Because of this significant risk, the Congressional Hazards Caucus Coalition will sponsor an earthquake hazards briefing Tuesday, September 20 at 3:00 pm, in room 2325 of the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill.
The Hurricane Katrina disaster highlights the importance of being prepared for and responding to natural hazards. Thus, it is imperative to prepare the public and their communities in advance to minimize the loss of life and property. The briefing will show how the public can become involved in monitoring earthquake shaking, how to design and build earthquake-resistant structures and how to protect infrastructure, including communications, oil and gas pipelines, and water and sewage systems. The briefing will also address how to respond to an earthquake after it happens, providing information on emergency response systems and personal safety.

The historical record for this zone, which has the longest recorded data about its earthquakes of any major fault in the world, shows that earthquakes occur in clusters of up to five events, with an average time interval of 300 years between quakes, said Chris Goldfinger, a marine geologist at Oregon State University. Goldfinger and other scientists have been studying this subduction zone for many years.
The two most recent quakes on this fault occurred in the year 1700 (a magnitude 9 event) and approximately the year 1500. It has now been 305 years since the last event. So is the Cascadia subduction zone finished for now or on the brink of event number five?
"We know quite a bit about the periodicity of this fault zone and what to expect," he said. "But the key point we don’t know is whether the current cluster of earthquake activity is over yet, or does it have another event left in it."
