The Napoli legend was back for former teammate Ciro Ferrara’s farewell match, along with 70,000 Napoli fans. Although he was given a standing ovation as he jogged around the pitch, the Argentine World Cup winner could not take any part in the match.

“I'm not playing because I can't manage it,” stated Maradona. “I had a try with my brothers, but my knee is out of action and it needs operating. But tonight I am going to be on the field with my teammates to be close to Ciro Ferrara. He is leaving football, but he will not leave our hearts because he is a great man.”

Ferrara retires with eight Scudetti – two with Napoli and six with Juventus – and starts work in pre-season as a youth team Coach with the Bianconeri. His farewell match pitted past and present Napoli stars against their Juventus counterparts. The Azzurri ran out 4-1 winners, with Ferrara netting the first goal.

After the game, Maradona revealed that he plans to return to Naples in the future for his own farewell game. “I couldn't do it tonight, but if it is possible I will come back again to Naples because I want to play my last game here,” he said. “I want to say a huge thank you to the people. The heart of Naples beats forever with me and my heart is with them.”

Maradona joined Napoli in 1984 and helped them win two Serie A titles, the Italian Cup and the 1989 UEFA Cup.

The new Serie A season will kick off on Sunday August 28 and conclude on May 14, with five midweek rounds.

The campaign will kick off on Saturday August 20 with the Italian Supercup clash between Scudetto holders Juventus and the winners of the Coppa Italia, which will be either Inter or Roma.

Today the Lega Calcio drew up the basic structure of the Italian season and there will be five midweek rounds – all of them on a Wednesday. They are September 21, October 26, December 21, January 18 and February 8.

Space will be left for the remaining World Cup qualifiers and a potential play-off to reach the tournament in Germany. These rest weekends will be on September 4, October 9 and November 13.

The full fixture list will not be drawn up until around a month before the season kicks off.

Parma director general Luca Baraldi has been critical of referees this term and was further infuriated by the three penalty appeals that were rejected in their play-off defeat.

The result puts Bologna in pole position, but Alberto Gilardino, Domenico Morfeo, Daniele Bonera and Matteo Contini are among the players returning for the second leg on Saturday evening.

“The biggest regret was playing without six suspended stars,” added the Gialloblu director. “At least we discovered by this performance that we have the opportunity to beat Bologna at the Dall’Ara and we’ll have more of the squad at our disposal.”

Bologna are holding a Press blackout to best prepare for this relegation play-off, but director and former player Giancarlo Marocchi commented on their 1-0 win.

“If we had been able to score two goals then it would’ve been more secure, but one is not enough, although this clearly is not a bad result. It’s just half-time in this tie and we have four days to recover our energy.”

Bologna’s biggest worry is represented by top scorer Gilardino, though ex-Juve midfielder Marocchi pinpoints another problem.

Juventus will complete the signing of Roma’s Antonio Cassano once they raise the funds to finance the move.

Reports are gathering pace that the starlet will be heading to Turin, after a deal is understood to have been agreed with both the club and the player.

The Giallorossi have allegedly accepted an £11m cash only offer, with Cassano set to be handed a five-year contract.

The Stadio Delle Alpi outfit are hoping to get a large chunk of that fee with the sales of Fabrizio Miccoli and Marcelo Zalayeta.

Fiorentina are set to hand over £5m to Juve in order to complete his full signing from the Bianconeri.

While the Italian champions are confident they can net around £5m from the sale of forward Marcelo Zalayeta.

Cassano is also a transfer target for Inter but it does seem as if the Old Lady of Italian football are in pole position to sign him.

In other Juventus transfer news, the club are today being linked with the Arsenal pair of Sol Campbell and Patrick Vieira.

Players heading out of Turin include Igor Tudor, Stephen Appiah, Nicola Legrottaglie and Manuele Blasi.

Rumoured tensions with Chelsea suggest Hernan Crespo might not remain at Milan, though Parma admit the Alberto Gilardino move is coming to a head.

Argentine hitman Crespo told newspapers last week that he was confident of renewing his loan spell at the San Siro with the aid of a pay cut, but it’s claimed problems have hit the deal.

Milan are said to be angry at Chelsea’s persistent interest in Andriy Shevchenko and Gennaro Gattuso, while the Stamford Bridge side considers the £8.6m asking price for Kakha Kaladze to be too high.

The end result could be to bring Crespo back to the Premiership, a blow that would be smoothed over for Coach Carlo Ancelotti by the arrival of Gilardino.

This is another sticking point, as the other main contenders for the Parma top scorer are Chelsea, so the two clubs are duelling on the market.

“Next week we will sit down around the table with Gilardino and discuss everything,” revealed Parma technical director Oreste Cinquini on Radio Radio.

The Italian international and his agent have repeatedly confirmed that their number one choice is Milan, but that a considerably better financial offer from Chelsea will not be dismissed out of hand.

Torino and Perugia look set to meet in the promotion play-off Final after both secured precious away victories in the semis.

The first leg ties went in favour of the big clubs, as Torino silenced Ascoli’s Stadio Del Duca thanks to Quagliarella’s 32nd-minute header on Andre Pinga’s free kick. The home side had a good chance to even the score when Antonelli rattled the crossbar.

Perugia fared even better and were able to beat Treviso on their own turf despite playing almost the entire second half in 10 men due to Milanese’s dismissal. Omkoopschandaal promotie Genua

De politie heeft voorzitter Enrico Preziosi van Genua aangehouden voor verhoor. Diens voetbalclub promoveerde vorige week naar de Serie A na winst tegen Venetië.

Algemeen directeur Pino Pagliari van Venetië werd dinsdag aangehouden met 250.000 euro cash in een tas op de achterbank van zijn auto. Daardoor dreigt het succes van Genua een wrange bijsmaak te krijgen.

Voorzitter Enrico Preziosi, zijn zoon Matteo en directeur Stefano Capozucca zijn officieel beschuldigd van omkoping. De laatste en beslissende wedstrijd in de Serie B tegen Venetië, die op 11 juni werd gespeeld en eindigde in een 3-2 overwinning voor Genua, is besmet verklaard. De nederlaag maakte voor Venetië niets meer uit, de club was al gedegradeerd.

Pagliara kon geen overtuigende verklaring geven voor de herkomst van het geld, dat werd aangetroffen bij een zogenaamd toevallige controle langs de snelweg van Milaan naar Venetie.

In werkelijkheid wisten de agenten al wat ze zouden vinden, omdat ze een telefoongesprek hadden afgeluisterd tussen Pagliara en een topman van Genua, die hem verzocht om naar hem toe te komen 'om onze zaken even af te wikkelen'.

Het onderzoek begon nadat de politie vreemde gesprekken had afgeluisterd op de mobiele telefoon van Massimo Barbagallo, een aanvaller van Venetië wiens toestel al langer werd afgetapt omdat hij wordt verdacht van het manipuleren van uitslagen ten behoeve van de clandestiene toto.

Kort voor de wedstrijd tegen Genua werd Barabagallo opgebeld door een speler van Genua en door directeur Capozucca, die in verhulde termen een akkoord voorstelden, dat 'heel veel rozen voor iedereen' beloofde. Op grond daarvan vroeg en kreeg de politie toestemming om afluisterapparatuur aan te brengen in Barabagallo's hotelkamer in Genua.

The Dutchman has struggled to settle with the outfit and his two-year stint in Milan will end this summer.

"There is no space for me in the team. They’ve offered me a few solutions but nothing has been decided yet."

Van der Meyde, who arrived from Ajax in 2003, has numerous options available to him after being linked with a host of clubs.

Everton and Middlesbrough are keen on him in the Premiership, while he could be offered to Valencia in exchange for Stefano Fiore.

The midfielder could also remain in Italy though as Roma and Fiorentina have been associated with his swoop.

Vorige week zondag eindigde de thuiswedstrijd in het kolkende San Paolo stadion, tot aan de nok toe gevuld met 85.000 uitzinnigen, in een uiterst teleurstellende 0-0. De confrontatie is beladen. Het stadion in Avellino draagt een gitzwarte herinnering met zich mee. In 2003 viel een jonge supporter van Napoli van een hoge muur, opgejaagd door tientallen Avellino-fans. Hij overleed later in het ziekenhuis.

Om ons heen loopt de stad leeg. De snelweg van Napels naar Avellino is van de supporters. Letterlijk. Dertigduizend Napolitanen reizen hun ploeg achterna. Slechts een kleine zevenduizend hebben een kaartje kunnen bemachtigen. De honderden politieagenten bij de blokkades laten alleen de wagens door waarvan de inzittenden een kaartje voor de wedstrijd kunnen tonen. De mensen zonder kaartje worden teruggestuurd. Ze pikken het niet en gaan op de vuist met de oproerpolitie. Ik ben onder de indruk. Bang. Maar ik laat het niet merken aan de anderen. Voorbij de blokkades voeren we onze snelheid op tot honderdtachtig per uur. We lijken te zweven, vliegen van de linker naar de rechter rijstrook en terug. Harde beatmuziek schalt uit de open ramen. Ik werp een blik door de voorruit. Een zee van blauwe vlaggen boven het asfalt. Mijn hart klopt in mijn keel. Vandaag moet het gebeuren.

Vijf minuten voor het begin van de wedstrijd in Avellino wordt het onrustig in het grauwe betonnen uitvak. Onze leider is gearriveerd. Een man met een indrukwekkend postuur loopt trots de trap af. Een lange paardenstaart en een gitzwarte snor. Zijn dikke pens hangt over een legerbroek. Zijn aankomst blijkt voor de Napoli-supporters het sein om wakker te worden. Met een staande ovatie begroet de harde kern hun leider. Hij loopt naar voren, er is speciaal voor hem een schavot geplaatst op de tribune. Hij klimt op een trap en neemt een microfoon in de hand. Terwijl hij spreekt slaan de aanwezigen in het vak de armen om elkaars schouders. Mijn beide buurmannen omarmen mij. De leider schreeuwt en zwaait zijn hand de lucht in. Zevenduizend mensen springen tegelijk op, arm in arm. Ze zingen hun liederen, de tribune trilt, de klanken galmen tegen de muren. Ik voel me onderdeel van een leger, de man met de lange haren is de generaal. Even later besluit ik dat het zo is. Dit is een leger. Dit is geen voetbalwedstrijd, maar een strijd om leven en dood. Degene die de tifosi het leven schenkt, is God. De taferelen rondom het bezoek van Diego Armando Maradona vorige week lijken nu opeens logisch en rationeel. Ik geloofde niet wat ik zag. Nu wel. Het is vier uur. De spelers komen het veld op, de wedstrijd gaat beginnen. ,,Ik heb angst'', zegt Maurizio nog. De fluit klinkt. De bal rolt, er is geen weg meer terug. Nu moet het gebeuren. Maar het gaat mis. Drie minuten voor rust scoort Avellino 1-0. En onmiddellijk breekt de pleuris uit. In het Napoli-vak wordt een vuurpijl afgeschoten richting eretribune. De mensen stuiven uit elkaar als een kudde op hol geslagen paarden. Flessen, blikken en stokken vliegen over en weer tussen de supportersgroepen. Dit is oorlog. Drie meter links van mij valt een Bengaalse fakkel in de nek van een ME'er. Hij zakt in elkaar. Tot overmaat van ramp wordt het 2-0 voor Avellino en speelt Napoli met tien man verder omdat Bonomi van het veld wordt gestuurd. De laatste vijf minuten rest er alleen nog hoop. Maar verder dan de 2-1 komt Napoli niet. Een explosie van geweld volgt. Het duel eindigt in een enorme chaos als honderden tifosi over de hekken springen. Ze bestormen het veld terwijl de wedstrijd nog bezig is. De spelers vluchten naar binnen. De ME raakt op en buiten het veld slaags met de supporters. Na tien minuten wordt de laatste minuut uitgespeeld. Het is voorbij. Aan de westzijde begint de ME met het schoonvegen van de tribune. Terwijl we teleurgesteld en zwijgend de trap aflopen, klinken in de verte de harde dreunen van vuurwerkbommen. Ik denk terug aan de sfeer voor de wedstrijd. In slechts negentig minuten werd kracht hoop, werd hoop teleurstelling en werd teleurstelling geweld. Zes mannen zwijgen in een kleine Punto. De radio staat uit. We luisteren naar het gezoem van de banden op het wegdek. Ik kijk naar de zijkant van het strak vertrokken gezicht van Maurizio, zijn lippen bewegen: ,,een dolk zit diep in mij.''

Napels huilt. Nog een seizoen van ultieme vernedering voor de armzalige erfenis van Diego Maradona. Maar ook volgend jaar zijn ze er weer. Stadion San Paolo, bomvol met trotse Napolitanen. Mario heeft gelijk. Napels eet, drinkt en ademt voetbal. Altijd en overal.

Serie C side Napoli have confirmed that Edy Reja will still be their Coach for the 2005-06 campaign.

There were doubts over his future after the club failed to win promotion to Serie B at the weekend.

But Azzurri President Aurelio De Laurentiis has backed the former Cagliari man. "Reja has been confirmed," he stated.

Reja said: "I thank the President and sporting director Pierpaolo Marino for renewing their faith in me."

Meanwhile, De Laurentiis has dismissed claims that he could bring Cagliari ace Gianfranco Zola back to the club.

Bologna are keeping a close eye on the financial status of Serie A sides and Siena seem to be the most at risk.

The shareholders' meeting was unable to find a way through the current situation and President Paolo De Luca, who owns 96 per cent of the club shares, reportedly needs to raise the capital by £7m.


“There are no problems,” insisted the Siena patron. “The only truth of the matter is that the meeting will continue to help us reach the deadlines in the best possible condition. I want to reassure all the fans that in a few days we will raise the capital.”


With the fate of Fiorentina and Napoli still fresh in the memory, some sections of the Italian Press are predicting another hot summer in the courts for football clubs. If they are unable to meet the financial guidelines, teams will not be able to register for the Championship and be knocked down a Division.


“This year there will be absolute rigidity from the authorities,” warned lawyer Mattia Grassiani. “There are rules in place and all we need is to apply them.”


If a top flight club fails to register, then Bologna will be ready to take advantage and revoke their relegation. The Rossoblu lost the play-off to Parma and would be first in line to step in if a place opened up in Serie A.


“We must keep a close eye on the situation and then see what we can do to look after our interests,” added Bologna patron Gazzoni Frascara. “I have the utmost faith in the FA to do its job.”


Another option to allow them back in would be represented by Genoa, who are under investigation for match-fixing allegations. The club has denied any wrong-doing and no official charges have been brought.

Chelsea ponder Trezeguet option

Juventus’ David Trezeguet could become Chelsea’s latest transfer target as their hunt for a new striker continues.

The Premiership champions are openly looking for a new forward but have so far been unable to capture any of their targets.

Inter and Milan have already rejected Chelsea bids for Adriano and Andriy Shevchenko respectively.

Barcelona ace Samuel Eto’o was also associated with a Stamford Bridge switch but he has since extended his contract at the Nou Camp.

Chelsea’s proposed move for Alberto Gilardino is also a complicated one, as the Parma ace prefers a Milan switch.

The English club may now turn their attention to Trezeguet, given that Juventus have a history of sacrificing big name players as the sales of Roberto Baggio, Christian Vieri and Zinedine Zidane illustrate.

The Turin giants have also admitted that they will need to sell this summer before they can buy.

That fact was again underlined yesterday by transfer guru Luciano Moggi. "We like Antonio Cassano (of Roma) but we don’t have the money to buy him," he said.

However, the Stadio Delle Alpi outfit could raise the funds to finance that bid should Chelsea come forward for Trezeguet.

The latter has been linked with an exit, especially as Juventus coped admirably without the international during his numerous injury problems this term.

Trezeguet, given his outstanding scoring record, would be welcomed by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

He wants a new attacker to work alongside Didier Drogba, especially as Mateja Kezman is set to leave the club this summer.

Italian champions Juventus have completed deals to keep Czech midfielder Pavel Nedved and French defender Lilian Thuram with the club until 2008. Juve said in a statement the pair had signed two-year extensions to their contracts, which were due to run out at the end of next season.

Nedved, European Footballer of the Year in 2003, previously suggested he could retire in 2006 but the new deal means the 32-year-old's contract now runs for three more seasons. However, Czech news agency CTK quoted Nedved's agent Zdenek Nehoda as saying the 32-year-old had reserved the right to end his contract with the Turin club at the end of any season.

Both players joined Juventus in 2001 with central defender Thuram arriving from Parma and Nedved bought from Lazio. The pair have been a key part of three title successes with Juve, including last season's victory under coach Fabio Capello.

Nedved was instrumental in helping the Czech side reach the Euro 2004 semi-finals in Portugal but he retired from the national team last year. Czech fans hope he may return for the final stages of the qualifying campaign for next year's World Cup in Germany. The Czechs trail Group One leaders Netherlands by a point.

Parma are set for massive changes as a Swiss company is in final takeover talks that could bring in Zdenek Zeman and ex-Roma director Franco Baldini.

The Tanzi family has been trying to sell the club ever since the Parmalat empire was plunged into uncertainty by a financial scandal. This week administrator Luca Baraldi resigned, paving the way for the new owners – said to be Swiss company Ticino Hosting.

The IT outfit is owned by Naples-born Gaetano Valenza, who has been working in Switzerland for the last 20 years. Sources claim the deal will be finalised on June 30.

With this influx of cash will come a new Coach and staff, so newspapers have suggested talks are in full swing for Zeman to take the bench.

The former Lecce and Lazio boss had been heavily linked with Roma and Brescia, but could be enticed by the promise of more Serie A football at the Stadio Tardini.

Parma’s team will also need to be restructured and the man to organise this revolution is Franco Baldini, who earlier this year resigned as Roma’s director of sport.

“There is a good chance I’ll join Parma,” confessed Baldini. “Everything depends on the timing of the situation with the new ownership. It does seem to be a solid option for me and I’d gladly give up my holiday time if it meant getting started on this new job.”

Baldini walked out on the Giallorossi following a difference of opinion on their transfer strategy with de facto President Rosella Sensi. He was dismayed that the club was trying to build bridges with arch rivals Juventus and Milan.

Juve director general Luciano Moggi has confirmed they’re ready to push for Patrick Vieira and are playing the waiting game with Antonio Cassano.

“I think that Juventus are more willing to make a play for a midfielder rather than Cassano, as this is the area we most need to strengthen,” he told Turin-based newspaper ‘Tuttosport’. “If Vieira was on the market then we’d already have made a bid. He’s undoubtedly a champion, but Arsenal don’t want to release him.”

This might not be entirely true, as the Frenchman is said to be increasingly unhappy with the lack of European success at Highbury. He will be out of contract in 2007 and, as he approaches 30, is eager to test himself in Serie A again following a brief spell at Milan under Fabio Capello.

The money to bring Vieira in could come from another Premiership club, as Chelsea have made an offer for David Trezeguet.

“We have spoken to the Stamford Bridge side, certainly,” confirmed Moggi. “It was the same kind of conversation we had with Real Madrid for Gianluigi Buffon. We answered that our stars are not for sale.”

The transfer guru is notorious for manipulating the media and it is widely believed Trezeguet will leave Turin this summer. If Chelsea are willing to pay £20m for the oft-injured Frenchman, then that cash could be re-routed to sign Vieira and perhaps even Cassano.

“At the moment I have to say that Cassano will stay at Roma. If by August 31 he was still available and the Giallorossi didn’t expect £13m, then we might reconsider the situation.”

There are new reports that Real Madrid are reviving their interest in the fiery youngster and would appease Roma by offering to keep him at the Olimpico on loan until 2006. With this in mind, Juve are trying to resolve the status of Fabrizio Miccoli, Enzo Maresca and Giorgio Chiellini – all part-owned by Fiorentina – to use them as part of their transfer deals.

Marcelo Zalayeta is another valuable option on the market to cut down some of these superstar prices.

“Zalayeta has asked us for a meeting and would gladly stay at Juve for life, but he is frustrated at spending so much time on the bench,” concluded Moggi. “I understand his position, although it isn’t easy for us to part with such a good player.”

Inter enquire after Vucinic

Lecce announced they have told Inter that Mirko Vucinic is not for sale after the San Siro giants made enquiries.

“The Nerazzurri did contact us to ask about Vucinic and whether he was available for transfer,” revealed director Carlo Regalia on ‘Radio Radio’. “We explained that we have no intention of releasing him.”

Vucinic has made quite an impact on Serie A since Lecce’s top scorer Valeri Bojinov moved to Fiorentina in January, netting 19 goals in 28 appearances.

Milan are also said to have shown an interest in the Serb, but he seems set to stay on at the Stadio Via del Mare.

“I told Vucinic to remember that the most difficult year is the one where you must confirm your talents,” added Regalia. “He told me he’ll gladly stick with us.”

Lecce have a long history of selling their top stars for a good price, such as Javier Ernesto Chevanton and Bojinov, so the move is not entirely out of the question.

“The problem is that his wages are just £100,000 per season. If someone comes in with an offer of £1.4m, then Vucinic won’t be quite as happy to remain with Lecce.”

Lazio bid for Bolano

Lazio are interested in Parma midfielder Jorge Bolano, while Espanyol man Toni Soldevilla is preparing to move to the Stadio Tardini.

The Biancocelesti have reportedly already lodged an offer for Colombian Bolano, who has spent the last six years in Italy with Perugia, Sampdoria and Lecce.

The 28-year-old has been specifically requested by new Coach Delio Rossi (pictured), who already worked with the player at the Stadio Via del Mare in 2003-04.

It’s claimed there is a £1m price-tag on Bolano’s head, so Lazio are more likely to sign him on a loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Parma are looking to bring in a new defender to replace Daniele Bonera, who is expected to move on to Juventus in the summer.

Toni Soldevilla will be out of contract from Espanyol in 2006 and wants to make the move on loan for the final year.

“I will join an Italian club, but for the moment I cannot say anything more,” explained the Spaniard. “At the moment, the important thing is for me to leave Spain and start a new chapter in my life. I hope to have the same success I had here.”

Pizarro and Ricardinho for Roma

David Pizarro has confirmed his desire to join Luciano Spalletti at Roma, while the club is also in talks for Brazilian midfielder Ricardinho.

“David was already interested in joining the Giallorossi before, let alone now that Spalletti is in charge,” explained his agent Fernando Hidalgo.

The Chilean midfielder has also been linked with Juventus and Inter over the last six months, but seems to have set his heart on the Stadio Olimpico.

“Udinese know that he wants to leave. As soon as a concrete offer is received, we will go to the directors and put pen to paper. Roma are without a shadow of doubt his preferred option.”

Pizarro is not the only South American who is of interest to the Giallorossi, as reports suggest they are in negotiations for Ricardinho.

The 29-year-old Santos midfielder is considered to be a perfect replacement for Emerson and already has an EC passport. His price-tag is £4.4m, but Roma face competition from Real Madrid and Turkish outfit Fenerbahce.

Talks are also continuing with Diego Placente, who is out of contract from Bayer Leverkusen. The 28-year-old left-back’s agents have been in the city since Friday and it’s believed the final details will be whittled down on Monday.

Completing this signature quickly is an imperative, as there is the possibility that FIFA will impose a ban on Roma’s overseas transfer activity as a result of the Philippe Mexes saga. If their appeal against Auxerre’s protest is not successful, this could stop them signing new players for a year.

Nigerian sensation Stephen Makinwa has told a television station that he expects to be wearing the Inter jersey by Monday.

“I hope that my move to the Nerazzurri is completed on Monday,” said the striker. “I am very happy to have reached this stage of negotiations so quickly.”

The 21-year-old has made quite an impact on Serie A since joining Atalanta in the January transfer window, scoring six goals that almost saved them from relegation, and is still co-owned by the Bergamo club and Genoa.

He had been heavily linked with Milan and Palermo, but his friendship with fellow Nigerian Obafemi Martins proved to be the key.

“I chose Inter because it is my dream to play for a big club where I can challenge for the Champions’ League and Scudetto. Besides, I’ll have no problem settling in if I can hook up with my good friend Martins.”

However, with so many strikers already at Roberto Mancini’s disposal and his similarity in style to Martins, it is possible that Makinwa will be loaned out to gain some more top flight experience.

“Nobody has spoken to me about spending time at another club,” assured the former Modena hitman. “As far as I can see, that isn’t going to be an issue.”

Amantino Mancini’s new agent has confirmed that the Brazilian has no intention of staying at the Stadio Olimpico, alerting Juve, Inter and Real Madrid.

“Amantino wants to leave Roma,” announced new representative Gilmar Veloz. “At this moment in time he is not at the centre of any negotiations, but the club knows full well what his intentions are and he has already put in a transfer request.”

Mancini was a gamble when he was signed two seasons ago as a replacement for Marcos Cafu, as he had spent most of the previous campaign on the bench at Serie B minnows Venezia.

However, he turned into one of their most impressive players and scored some spectacular goals, including a backheel flick in the Rome derby.

It has become clear for several weeks that he wishes to move on and even changed representative – taking on Emerson’s agent Veloz – to facilitate the next step in his career.

Inter, Real Madrid and Juventus have all expressed an interest in the winger, although reports suggest Mancini wishes to join Fabio Capello and Emerson in Turin.

The situation could yet turn ugly, as he only renewed his contract with the Giallorossi a few months ago. “I wasn’t his manager at the time,” explained Veloz. “At this stage, it’s all up to Roma.”

Should Juventus fail to capture Mancini, then they are looking overseas for viable alternatives. These include Arsenal man Robert Pires and Real Madrid starlet Guti.

Sheva "offered to Real Madrid"

Transfer guru Ernesto Bronzetti has revealed that Milan once offered Andriy Shevchenko to Real Madrid, while Walter Samuel is on the verge of joining Inter.

“I was on the boat on the coast of Ibiza with Real President Florentino Perez and Rossoneri Vice-President Adriano Galliani when Shevchenko was offered to us,” revealed the consultant. “The striker was coming off a difficult period of his career, but Perez preferred to sign Ronaldo instead.”

As Ronaldo left Inter in 2002 and Shevchenko had scored just 14 Serie A goals that season, it is easy to track back to the time of this sensational offer.

Real and Chelsea have repeatedly made £30m bids for the Ukrainian in recent years and all have been rejected out of hand by Galliani. There were even reports that Ronaldo was interested in a return to Serie A football.

“It’s all talk! Ronaldo and David Beckham are the only players they will never sell because they are talented and precious commodities on a media level.”

Bronzetti continues to work for Madrid and gave the ‘Corriere dello Sport’ newspaper some insight into the rumoured double move for Walter Samuel and Santiago Solari.

“The deal to bring Samuel and Solari to Inter should be completed on Monday or Tuesday. We are waiting for the Confederations Cup to end, as Samuel is a consummate professional and wants to concentrate on Argentina’s campaign.”

The Santiago Bernabeu outfit has also been linked with a bid for Antonio Cassano, but again Bronzetti believes otherwise.

“The only Coach who can control Cassano is Fabio Capello, so he’ll go to Juventus. I expect Roma’s Amantino Mancini to do the same.”

Newspapers in Italy claim that Parma have agreed a deal with Zdenek Zeman, but Brescia insist they are going to make one last stab for his services.

“I have been tracking this Coach for the last 20 years,” confessed Brescia President Gino Corioni. “I still believe we can bring him to the Stadio Rigamonti. We are courting him openly and if Zeman doesn’t come now, then he never will.”

The Rondinelle are looking to rebuild following their relegation to Serie B, but face stiff competition from top flight outfit Parma.

“We have had a few problems in negotiations over the last few days, but hope to have a final answer next week.”

President Corioni also made an intriguing statement on star striker Andrea Caracciolo, who has been linked with Juventus, Lazio and Roma. “I believe that Palermo is in his destiny,” said the patron.

Another player unwilling to stay with Brescia in Serie B is Luigi Di Biagio, who in his time with the club has developed from a midfielder to a classy central defender.

“We have had a chat with Lazio representatives, but so far nothing more than that,” noted his agent Dario Canovi. “He has a contract with Brescia and must speak with President Corioni before making a decision on his future, but I think at the end of the day he’ll find a Serie A club.”

Fabio Bazzani admits he’s set to return to Sampdoria and will be replaced at Lazio by Bologna’s Igli Tare.

“I honestly haven’t heard from anyone apart from my agent,” explained the striker. “In any case, my contract is owned by Sampdoria and I must wait for their decision.”

Bazzani was loaned out to Lazio in January following a bitter row with Coach Walter Novellino, but failed to make an impact in the capital and scored just three goals in 15 Serie A appearances.

“What happened at Samp, even if it wasn’t terribly clear, is in the past now,” added the Italian international. “If the club decides to keep me then I would be honoured to wear that jersey again.”

The Blucerchiati shelled out £2.5m to sign the striker from Perugia in 2002 and are not ready to release him for less than that now.

Lazio will not meet that price-tag, especially as they are looking at cheaper alternatives for the centre-forward role. The current favourite is Bologna’s Albanian giant Igli Tare, who in turn should make way for Udinese benchwarmer Dino Fava.

Cesare Prandelli outlines his plans for the new Fiorentina and Italian international Marco Materazzi admits he could join in.

“I haven’t heard anything from Inter yet and have a contract until 2009, so I don’t think they are eager to sell,” stated the defender in newspaper ‘Il Giornale della Toscana’.

“We have received an offer from Fiorentina and if the clubs think it a good idea then I would certainly evaluate the situation. The Viola are a very important side in Italian football and I’d be willing to look at this opportunity, although I have never pushed Inter to release me.”

There have been reports throughout this year that Materazzi’s time at the San Siro was coming to an end, although up until now he had mainly been linked with Lazio.

Fiorentina are looking to reinforce every area of the team after just avoiding relegation and will build around new Coach Cesare Prandelli’s tactics. Several new signings – Christian Brocchi of Milan and Parma goalkeeper Sebastien Frey – have already been completed on loan deals.

“Brocchi is a fantastic player, especially when it comes to character,” said the ex-Parma tactician. “Frey has natural talent and can yet improve, while Manuel Pasqual is also impressive. We already have an explosive trident attack with Fabrizio Miccoli, Giampaolo Pazzini and Valeri Bojinov, while Hidetoshi Nakata just needs to find his confidence again. Everything is possible and we need to ensure the squad is balanced.”

Palermo threaten to turf out Toni

Despite scoring 50 League goals in two seasons, Palermo admit they are ready to sell Luca Toni and bring in Andrea Caracciolo as his replacement.

“Toni cannot expect to get any more money out of Palermo,” slammed President Maurizio Zamparini. “His current wages will not be increased. It is true that he is now an Italian international, but it’s not as if we cut his salary when we were in Serie B.”

Fresh from netting 20 goals in 35 appearances this season – almost half of the Sicilians’ total tally of 48 – Toni’s agent requested a meeting to discuss his future, but was given short shrift.

“If Toni wants to earn more money then he’d better hope that Milan, Juventus or Inter come to buy him,” added Zamparini.

The notion that this is no mere empty threat came when Brescia patron Gino Corioni revealed this weekend that the club had made an offer for Andrea Caracciolo. “I think Palermo is in his future,” he confirmed.

Caracciolo’s similarity in style and stature to Toni would suggest he is being drafted in as a replacement rather than a partner.

This has alerted all the big clubs to Toni’s availability and the former Brescia man could be a cheaper alternative to Alberto Gilardino for Milan.

Zamparini himself also pointed out that Fiorentina are another option. "I know that Cesare Prandelli likes Toni a lot, so they would certainly be interested in signing him."

Genoa in ‘match-fixing’ probe

The 2004-05 campaign is over but Serie B champions Genoa may still not be playing in the top-flight next term, as an investigation into alleged match-fixing gathers pace.

The port club secured their place in the First Division with a 3-2 win over Venezia on the last day of the season.

However, an enquiry has since been launched with club officials from both sides being formally suspected of collaborating to achieve sporting fraud.

Local magistrates, from Genoa and Monza, have already questioned Genoa chief Enrico Preziosi, his son Matteo and director general Stefano Capozucca.

A probe was launched after police acquired recordings of numerous telephone conversations between players and officials.

Venezia’s sporting director Giuseppe Pagliara has also been assisting the enquiry after he was found with a suitcase containing 250,000 Euros. He insists that cash was for transfer market operations between the two sides.

Although the prime focus of the investigation is on the Genoa-Venezia game, the Rossoblu’s matches with Cesena, Empoli, Catanzaro and Piacenza are also being looked into.

All clubs deny any wrongdoing and the investigation continues.

If found guilty, Genoa could be handed an array of punishments ranging from a fine, points deductions or possible exclusion from Serie A.

Toni ponders Fiorentina option

Luca Toni says he would consider joining Fiorentina after Palermo surprisingly opened the door for his exit.

The giant target man was a key figure in the club’s UEFA Cup qualification after scoring 20 goals in Serie A.

But Palermo are ready to cash in on the forward amid claims that the Italian international wants a salary increase.

"Is my future in Florence? Having enjoyed a good season, there are a number of teams interested in me," Toni said on Monday.

"Fiorentina are a great club and are returning to the stage that they deserve when you look at their past.

"They have a solid structure and have a great Coach in the shape of Cesare Prandelli. We’ll see what happens because there is nothing for the time being."

Toni looked like he was certain to remain in Sicily, but the fact that the club are closing in on Brescia’s Andrea Caracciolo speaks volumes.

"I don’t know what can happen in the future because a lot of things are changing at Palermo," he added.

"Caracciolo? He is a great player and would be a good signing. We are not the same type of player but we are not wildly different either.

"It certainly won’t be easy to play together but it isn’t up to me to decide whether we can play together. That is up to Coach Gigi Del Neri to decide."

Juventus have completed the signing of Giorgio Chiellini from Fiorentina, but a blind auction will be needed to resolve the futures of Fabrizio Miccoli and Enzo Maresca.

All three players spent last term in Florence as a result of co-ownership deals that were struck in the summer.

Juventus took up their option to re-sign Chiellini after his impressive form this term led to a full international call-up for the Under-21 starlet.

The Turin giants have paid £3m for the left-back, despite initially trying to offer Stephen Appiah and Ruben Olivera, and they now own 100 per cent of his contract.

However, no deal was agreed regarding Miccoli and Maresca despite Juventus’ desire to sell, as they look to raise the cash necessary to fund their summer transfer campaign.

Fiorentina refused to meet Juve’s asking price as they instead wanted to extend their co-ownership deals for another season.

That means that the two clubs will now each submit one secret bid to the Italian Football League, with the team who offers more money taking control of the player.

Fiorentina will also need to make blind bids with Udinese and Perugia in order to resolve the futures of Martin Jorgensen and Christian Obodo respectively.

In other transfer news, Everton have completed the £5m capture of Danish international defender Per Kroldrup from Udinese.

Roma now fully own Under-21 international goalkeeper Gianluca Curci as he was previously shared with Palermo.

The two clubs also renewed their co-ownership deals for Cesare Bovo, who spent last term on loan at Parma, and Valerio Virga. The first will stay at Roma, while Virga will move to Sicily next season.

Palermo will also have Massimo Bonanni on their roster after Roma had earlier today brought him back from Vicenza.

Emiliano Bonazzoli will remain with Reggina after they agreed to renew their co-ownership terms with Parma.

The Italian Football authorities are set to give Pierluigi Collina special permission to continue refereeing in Serie A and B.

The official, renowned as the world’s best, should have retired this summer because he had reached the maximum age for a referee.

But the man in black, who turned 45 in February, is to be given special dispensation to work for one more season, once the new rule is passed by the Italian Football Federation.

Collina will therefore be able to take charge of Italian League and European Cup games next term, but will not be eligible for the 2006 World Cup Finals - as his new retirement date will be June 30, 2006.

Gerrard is real Juve target

Despite being linked with Arsenal star Patrick Vieira, reports today suggest that Steven Gerrard of Liverpool is actually Juventus’ real transfer objective.

The Italian champions are looking for a new central midfielder, as the club confirmed yesterday when they expressed their admiration for Vieira.

"I think that Juventus are more willing to make a play for a midfielder rather than (Roma’s Antonio) Cassano, as this is the area we most need to strengthen," said director general Luciano Moggi.

"If Vieira was on the market then we’d already have made a bid. He’s undoubtedly a champion, but Arsenal don’t want to release him."

Reports are now gathering pace in England that the Frenchman could be on the move, but whispers in Turin claim that Juve are actually more interested in Gerrard.

Boss Fabio Capello is believed to have asked his club to make a bid for the Liverpool captain, as the Coach desperately wants a new partner for Emerson in the heart of the team.

The England international is undoubtedly one of Europe’s best which has also seen him linked with a move to Real Madrid and Chelsea in the past.

However, tempting Gerrard to quit his hometown club for Turin, especially after winning the Champions’ League last term, will be some task.

Other possible midfield targets for the Bianconeri include Inter’s Cristiano Zanetti and Santos Mozart of Reggina.

Vieri could quit Inter

Christian Vieri is reportedly ready to leave Inter in an effort to make sure he doesn’t miss the plane to the 2006 World Cup Finals.

The striker, 32, is looking to play regularly next season in order to be a part of Marcello Lippi’s Italian national squad.

Given that Inter seemingly can’t guarantee him a starting shirt, Vieri is prepared to consider a summer exit.

The Nerazzurri currently have Adriano, Julio Cruz, Obafemi Martins and Alvaro Recoba on their books. The young Stephen Makinwa is also expected to arrive from Atalanta.

Vieri is concerned that he may not feature as regularly as he would like and is allegedly ready to ask the club to rescind his contract.

Inter could agree to that request, as the player only has 12 months left on his contract and they would save a substantial amount of money on wages.

However, it is unclear at this stage of where Vieri could be playing next term if he does leave the San Siro.

Inter are unlikely to allow him to join any of their title rivals, which has opened the door for a foreign switch.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly ready to re-sign the striker, while a number of clubs in England may be keen.

Options in Italy could possibly include Fiorentina or Palermo, even if he would have to take a cut in wages to complete such moves.

Miccoli snubs ‘tragic’ Juventus

Fiorentina’s Fabrizio Miccoli has used the word ‘tragedy’ to describe his possible return to Juventus.

The attacker may become a Juve player by the end of the week after the two clubs failed to resolve his future last night.

"I don’t want to go back to Juventus," he said. "I was hoping that Fiorentina would buy me but I don’t know what will happen now. Going back to Turin would be like a tragedy.

"I don’t think Juventus asked too much for me. I was prepared for everything but not this situation."

Miccoli is currently owned by both clubs, following his co-ownership switch from the Bianconeri at the start of this season.

The Viola wanted to renew that agreement but Juventus rejected that proposal as they wanted to sell him outright.

That means that the two clubs will now have to submit bids in Thursday’s blind auction in an effort to buy out the other club’s 50 per cent share in Miccoli.

So how does the blind auction work? Both clubs will write down the amount they want to pay for the remainder of the player’s contract and whoever tables the highest amount will net him.

For example, if Juventus bid £2m and Fiorentina £1m, then the Old Lady will have to pay the Viola £2m to take full ownership of the 26-year-old again.

If Juventus do grab Miccoli, they are likely to try to sell him to another club as he would be blocked in Turin by Alex Del Piero, Adrian Mutu and possibly Antonio Cassano.

Fiorentina lose star trio

Fiorentina have been dealt a heavy blow after they failed to keep Fabrizio Miccoli, Enzo Maresca and Christian Obodo on Tuesday.

All three spent the last campaign at the Stadio Franchi in co-ownership deals, the first two with Juventus and the latter with Perugia.

Fiorentina were forced to enter a blind auction for the trio and lost out on all three, even if financial details of the moves have yet to be revealed.

Miccoli and Maresca, much to their discontent, are now totally owned by the Turin giants yet again.

However, it is unlikely that either player will remain at the Stadio Delle Alpi, with Miccoli being tipped to join Roma as part of the deal to sign Antonio Cassano.

"Fabrizio has loved all of the clubs he has played for," stated his agent Francesco Caliandro, who opened the door to a capital switch.

"He will also love his next team if there are the right conditions in place to do that. I think that Roma are a great club and my client has respect for them."

Obodo, one of Serie A’s best young midfielders, will return to Serie B side Perugia for now – even if he is likely to be targeted by a number of other top-flight sides.

Fiorentina have managed to keep Martin Jorgensen though. They outbid Udinese for the other half of the Danish winger.

Report: Parma take-over complete

Swiss radio has announced that Ticino Hosting have completed their £20m take-over of Parma, but the club has denied these reports.

The last few days have seen several newspapers in Italy report that the Internet company was in negotiations to buy the troubled club.

Parma were placed under administration after owners Parmalat were hit by a financial scandal and have been looking for new shareholders ever since.

"There was no meeting in Lugano and there is no deal," insisted Gialloblu President Guido Angiolini. "However, if we are to do anything, it'll be before June 30."

Ticino Hosting are owned by Naples-born businessman Gaetano Valenza and are allegedly eager to bring Parma back to their former glory by keeping hold of £25m-rated Alberto Gilardino and bringing in Coach Zdenek Zeman and ex-Roma director Franco Baldini.

Meanwhile, the Gialloblu have sold Amauri to Chievo, bought up the remaining 50 per cent of Matteo Contini and renewed their co-ownership deals for Emiliano Bonazzoli (Reggina), Ferronetti (Roma), Massaro (Milan) and Ruffini (Pro Sesto).

Parma are not the only club looking at new ownership, as recently relegated Venezia must find new cash if they are to avoid bankruptcy. A group of fans have now proposed to start again with Public Company Venezia United.

Juventus on Robinho trail

Juventus are on the verge of hijacking Real Madrid’s proposed swoop for Brazilian starlet Robinho.

The latest ‘New Pele’ was believed to be close to a Spanish switch, but reports in his homeland suggest that the Italian club have entered the race for his signature.

The Estado de S. Paulo newspaper claims that the Bianconeri have offered $10m for a 40 per cent stake in the player.

The offer has reportedly been made to the player’s father, Gilvan de Souza, and agent Wagner Ribeiro.

Juventus’ proposed plan is to buy a stake in the attacking sensation but allow him to remain with Santos until his contract ends in 2008.

Robinho would then move to Turin in the same year when Alessandro Del Piero’s contract expires.

The youngster is one of the hottest players in South American football and Santos are believed to have already rejected an offer of £14m from Real.

Premiership giants Arsenal have also reportedly made a bid even if a switch to Highbury looks unlikely.

Real will reportedly keep trying to sign Robinho until July 8 before pulling out of negotiations.

Should they not sign the Brazilian, they could decide to take an interest in Roma’s Antonio Cassano.

The 23-year-old is expected to leave the Stadio Olimpico this summer with Juventus really keen on his arrival.

Real Madrid’s Santiago Solari will definitely wear the Inter shirt next term, insist numerous reports in Italy.

The Nerazzurri have been in talks for the Argentine winger and a deal has allegedly been agreed.

The midfielder, who will sign once he returns from holiday, will leave Real for nothing after netting himself £1.6m a season for the next three years.

Solari has been associated with the San Siro giants for over three years after an initial move collapsed in 2002.

The player should have joined Inter as part of the deal that saw Ronaldo turn his back on the Italian club.

But Solari, who was specifically requested by then boss Hector Cuper, failed to agree personal terms and therefore remained in Spain.

The player is Inter’s first signing of the summer but the club are hoping to land another Real ace in the form of Walter Samuel.

The central defender is wanted but his £3m a season salary demands are a major problem for the outfit.

Roma’s Cristian Chivu is a valid alternative for Samuel but the capital club’s £10m asking price may be too steep.

Gianfranco Zola: The Ambassador

It's hard to hear anything negative said about Gianfranco Zola. In fact it’s nigh on impossible to recall reading or hearing anything other than praise for the Sardinian star in the last 15 years or so. Zola has by now attained hero status, and after being presented with such prestigious awards as the OBE last November, and the annual Senatore Salvatore Mannironi prize just a month later for being the Sardinian citizen who's done the most to raise public opinion and esteem of the island, it's impossible to see how the little star can possibly be celebrated further.

His hero status is not just down to genius and skill on the pitch but rather for his combination of skill, professionalism, utmost humility and a determination to improve - even now at the ripe old age of 38. To trace the evolution of a hero, it's necessary to go back to the beginning.

Aged 18, Gianfranco took his first steps in professional football, for local team Nuorese. Previously he’d served his apprenticeship with Corrasi, the modest team of his small hometown Oliena. It wasn’t until 1989 and his move to Napoli, thanks to current Juventus and former Napoli director, Luciano Moggi, that the Italian public at large got to know Zola.

With Napoli he was lucky enough to play in a squad boasting South Americans such as Antonio Careca, Alemao and Daniel Fonseca, but more importantly, he was in the unique position to play substitute to the legendary Diego Armando Maradona. Whilst keeping himself a very respectable distance from all Maradona's personal intrigues, the young Zola made sure to glean as much as possible from the Argentine genius on the field. The training sessions where the two forwards stayed on to practise penalties, swapping feet so Maradona would have a go with his less favoured right foot, while Zola shot with his left, became legendary.

"I learnt everything from Diego," insists the diminutive Sardinian. "I used to spy on him every time he trained and learned how to curl a free-kick just like him. After one year I had completely changed. I saw him do things in training and in matches I had never even dreamed possible. He was simply the best I’ve ever seen. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have been a good player if I had not played with him at that stage of my career but I do know I wouldn’t be the player I am now."

After winning the Scudetto in his first season in the top flight, Zola gained a personal career boost the following spring as Maradona left Naples, handing over the coveted No 10 shirt to his Sardinian successor. Zola did well in Naples, scoring 32 goals in his four seasons there, and was well respected by new Coach Claudio Ranieri and the local supporters.

Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, Napoli had to sell their mercurial attacker. His move to Parma started off well, but after a few seasons and with competition from Hristo Stoichkov, Enrico Chiesa and Hernan Crespo, Coach Carlo Ancelotti found little use for him in his natural position, and the Sardinian felt himself sinking into the shadows.

Zola made the decision to go to London and join Ruud Gullit’s revolution at Stamford Bridge, at a cost of £4.5m. There began seven happy seasons with the Blues, where Magic Box – as he became known - scored 80 goals, and was named Premier League Player of the Year in 1997 and Best Loved Chelsea Player Ever. Once again financial reasons, just before the intervention of Russian magnate Roman Abramovich, forced the champion to consider potential moves, but Zola knew exactly where he was going. At the age of 37 it was time to go home. Gianfranco became a man on a mission - to bring joy and enthusiasm to the whole of his home island. Something he had done at Chelsea for seven years.

"Zola was undoubtedly one of Chelsea’s greatest players ever," said former chairman Ken Bates. "He’s been a joy to watch and a great influence both on and off the field, particularly because of his great interest with young fans. We owe him a hell of a lot of thanks."

In many ways Zola epitomises the Sardinian character. Strong minded, bordering on the stubborn with a hardworking loyal streak, dignity, respect and an ingrained love of his island and fellow islanders, as well as a great belief in family values. These characteristics make him exemplary as the unofficial ambassador for Sardinia, particularly thanks to his position in the public eye giving him the ability to transmit such values through his words and, even more so, through his actions.

The move to Cagliari was a wise one. Apart from the desire to bring his career to an end at home, the decision to take a step down into Serie B, with the inevitable cut in wages, by a player still at the height of a tremendous career is uncommon. But it paid off. Thanks to their new captain, Cagliari streaked through Serie B, finishing second to Sicilian side Palermo and securing a return to the top flight after a four-year absence. The joy throughout the island was tangible, and lead man Zola had the satisfaction of helping make his and their dreams come true.

With more money in the bank, Chelsea did ask for a return of Magic Box to London. Zola, his wife Franca and their three children Andrea, Martina and Samuele, had all grown extremely fond of life in Britain and the British had certainly grown fond of Zola. When Zola left London, Ranieri said that the aspect he most missed about him was how rival fans would applaud when he stepped from the Blues’ coach at away matches. Napoli also made an offer to bring Zola back. The Rossoblu captain stuck to his guns, though, and after a few days of speculation, the announcement came that he was staying on to lead his team in the top flight.

Apart from his loyalty to Cagliari, Zola also wanted his children to experience growing up in Italy. The Blues’ fans, however, have proved just as loyal to their hero as he was to his island. Match after match a handful of Londoners would turn up at the Sant'Elia to follow Zola’s progress, and the Chelsea merchandising shops quickly saw the opening and copies of his No 10 Cagliari shirt were put on sale in London.

Now that he’s an OBE, Zola feels his ties to Britain are even firmer. His award was given for services to the British game, and he was described as an excellent ambassador for football and an ideal model for young fans, as well as the most enduring and popular foreign player in the history of Chelsea Football Club. The work he does for charity was also praised. Receiving the OBE left Zola almost speechless, but he did manage to say how honoured he was and how sorry he was to leave Britain.

At a time when it’s generally the bad boys who make the headlines, when stadium violence is once again a problem in Italy, and player behaviour leaves a lot to be desired, someone like Zola - with his wholesome, enthusiastic and sportsman’s attitude - is a breath of fresh air. Parma sale hits problem

There is more uncertainty regarding the future of Parma Football Club after their proposed sale failed to take place on Thursday.

Swiss company Ticino Hosting were widely expected to complete their £20m take-over today, but that hasn’t happened.

It is unclear at this stage why the deal has stalled but there are a number of theories circulating in Emilia this evening.

One is that Parma’s failure to sell Alberto Gilardino, to either Milan or Chelsea, has seen the Tardini outfit’s value on the market increase.

Another is that the club would rather sell to a new consortium of local businessmen rather than the Swiss, who are owned by Naples-born entrepreneur Gaetano Valenza.

Parma were placed under administration after major-backers Parmalat were hit by a financial scandal and have been looking for new owners ever since.

It was rumoured that Valenza was set to bring in Coach Zdenek Zeman and former Roma sporting director Franco Baldini.

Meanwhile, Juventus have received an £11m cash injection after selling their official headquarters to Turin company Virgiliocinque.

The Bianconeri, however, will continue to rent the building in Corso Galileo Ferraris from the new owners.

That cash could now be used during this summer’s transfer market, mainly to aid their assault on Roma’s Antonio Cassano.

Inter confirm Vieri split

Christian Vieri is today without a club after Inter confirmed that they had mutually agreed to terminate his contract.

The striker’s deal was set to expire in June 2006 but has been rescinded following talks over the last few days.

"Negotiations between the club and the player were friendly at every stage, respecting the needs of either party," read a statement on the club’s website.

All the necessary paperwork was deposited with the Italian Football League on Friday morning.

"Inter would like to thank Christian Vieri for his contribution, over the last six years, to the history of this club," continued the Nerazzurri statement.

"Christian Vieri thanks Inter and the fans for their professional respect for him and affection during the relationship."

No financial details of the settlement have been revealed, but it is believed that the striker was handed around £6m to terminate his contract a year early.

Vieri is now a free agent and is already being linked with Juventus, Milan, Chelsea, Tottenham, CSKA Moscow, Valencia and Atletico Madrid.

Vieri scored 122 goals for Inter since his move from Lazio in 1999.

Serie B: Perugia risk relegation

After just missing out on promotion earlier this month, Perugia now risk dropping down to Serie C1 due to financial problems.

The club has not been registered for the new season and must find fresh funds to avoid sliding into a bankruptcy situation.

“By the start of next week I hope to have another £8m at my disposal,” explained President Alessandro Gaucci. “We were unable to meet the deadlines due to technical difficulties.”

However, the son of fiery former chief Luciano Gaucci admits that the scenario is not a happy one for the fans.

“I don’t want to lull anyone into a false sense of security, as our chances of salvaging the club are very small,” he added. “We are aware that we are running late in this race to register. I rushed round the country and put all my personal assets on the line to get an advance payment, but unfortunately it didn’t arrive in time for the deadline.”

There is still hope that Perugia can play in Serie B next season, as the authorities could accept a slightly late payment to balance the books.

“It would be convenient for many people, including the Federation, as everyone would have the money they were entitled to. Our crisis was sparked by many different factors, including the collapse of pay-per-view company Gioco Calcio, our relegation and failure to sell Chris Obodo, Jay Bothroyd and Zeljko Kalac in January.”

In theory, if Perugia are excluded from the Serie B Championship then Napoli could take the step up. The sides ahead of them in the pecking order would be Vicenza, Pescara, Catanzaro and Venezia, but all of these are dealing with their own financial worries.

Meanwhile, Torino are also under investigation for a bond that covered the outstanding £12m in taxes. “We were the victims of fraud and will clarify everything in record time,” assured Granata lawyer Carlo Mussa.

Toro need £23m to survive

After Perugia, now Torino need to find £23m by July 9 or face possible expulsion from Serie A and the bankruptcy of the 99-year-old club.

The Granata earned promotion following a play-off victory against Perugia earlier this month and registered for the new season thanks to a bond to cover their existing debts. However, that paperwork was falsified by an agent who Torino are now suing for fraud. It’s a trap that also caught Roma and Napoli in recent years, though they were given extra time to find a solution.

This leaves Torino just six days to find a bank that will cover them for the £23m in outstanding taxes or face expulsion from the top flight and possibly bankruptcy.

When Fiorentina failed to find sufficient funds to register, they were forced to start again with a new club in Serie C2, but last summer the Lodo Petrucci rule was introduced to allow these clubs to resume one Division below. Napoli took advantage of that change to play in Serie C1.

Should Torino, who were formed in 1906 and have won seven Scudetto titles, be excluded from the top flight then Bologna, Treviso or Ascoli will be promoted in their place.

“If we are called to play in Serie A then we will be ready and financially stable. A football club must be run like a business and that means balancing the books” noted Treviso President Setten. Ascoli patron Roberto Benigni added, “We are prepared for any eventuality and are following events closely.”

The Covisoc will give its verdict on the state of Italian club finances on July 9 and the sides can lodge an appeal three days later.

Perugia are also at risk and could be thrown out of the Serie B Championship if they fail to bring together £8m to register.

Defender Alessandro Gamberini has today completed his move from relegated Bologna to Fiorentina.

The 23-year-old has been linked with the Viola for the last week and has finally agreed terms with the Tuscan giants.

Gamberini, a former Under-21 international, has put pen to paper on a contract until June 2009.

Fiorentina, who conceded 50 goals in 38 Serie A games last term, paid 2.2m. Euro for the stopper who was raised through the Bologna youth system.

Vieri ‘agrees’ Milan deal

Christian Vieri is reportedly just days away from signing a contract with Milan following his shock Inter exit.

Whispers in the peninsula this evening insist that the striker has agreed a two-year deal after he became a free agent on Friday.

Vieri, who terminated his Nerazzurri terms by mutual consent, will allegedly sign next week once he passes his medical.

The Italian international is currently on holiday in Sardinia but will reportedly swap one San Siro club for another, despite interest from numerous other clubs across Europe.

Vieri could be joined by Alberto Gilardino in the new campaign, whose proposed transfer from Parma may be closer to completion tomorrow.

"The player will return from his holidays on Tuesday," his agent Beppe Bonetto told the Fiorentina.it website.

"That is when we will get a definite answer from Milan regarding their intentions towards him."

Should a Rossoneri switch collapse, the 23-year-old could still be heading to the city of Milan after Inter confirmed they were keen on him too.

"We’ve been chasing Gilardino for some time," owner Massimo Moratti told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

"We admittedly don’t really need to make any big changes to our offensive options but we are talking about a really good player."

Palermo have confirmed they are ready to sell star striker Luca Toni if an offer of at least £11m is made.

The Italian international has been linked with a summer exit but President Maurizio Zamparini insists he won’t let him go on the cheap.

"Luca Toni will not be leaving here for less than £11m," the Sicilian chief told the stadionews.it website.

Fiorentina are very interested in the forward but have reportedly only bid £11m for Toni and teammate Cristian Zaccardo.

However, Zamparini is unimpressed by the way Viola sporting director Pantaleo Corvino is conducting himself.

"He’s always tried to be crafty," added Zamparini. "He targets 20 players and causes great chaos. I think he’s simply creating smoke for no reason."

Toni has netted 50 League goals in two seasons at the Renzo Barbera but talks over a new contract have seemed to spoil their relationship.

The former Brescia man said last week that things would not be the same at Palermo anymore, a statement which has angered his employer.

"He is still too much of a kid to take part in important discussions, he should leave them up to me," concluded Zamparini.

Meanwhile, Palermo are reportedly close to signing Galatasaray goalkeeper Faryd Ali Mondragon.
