OM Aruba rekent op snelle doorbraak

ORANJESTAD/WILLEMSTAD — Het Openbaar Ministerie (OM) op Aruba verwacht spoedig een doorbraak in de zaak van de verdwijning van de achttienjarige Amerikaanse Natalee Holloway. Dat heeft het OM zaterdagmorgen tijdens een korte persconferentie bekend gemaakt. Het OM wilde verder ontkennen noch bevestigen dat een van de drie jonge verdachten intussen al zou hebben bekend, zoals al diverse Amerikaanse media meldden.



Onder meer CNN en CBS citeren daarbij adjunct-politiecommissaris Gerold Dompig. Volgens deze bron zou een van drie jongens die donderdag werden gearresteerd – Joran van der Sloot (17) en de broers Satish (19) en Depak Kalpoe (21) – de politie naar de plek brengen waar de scholiere Holloway is omgekomen. “Er is iets ergs gebeurd”, zou de verdachte hebben gezegd.

CNN sprak gisteren met Anita van der Sloot, de moeder van Joran. Zij vertelde ervan overtuigd te zijn dat haar zoon de autoriteiten alles heeft verteld en onschuldig is. “Hij was bereid om met alles te helpen en zei tegen me ‘Mam, maak je geen zorgen, alles zal goedkomen. Ik weet dat ik onschuldig ben. Ik heb niets gedaan’. Hij was erg open tegenover ons en vertelde alles wat er is gebeurd.” Joran heeft volgens haar ook aangeboden om met de familie van Natalee Holloway te praten.



UITBREIDING

Het OM heeft vrijdag de leiding van het onderzoeksteam uitgebreid met officier van Justitie Amalin Flanegin. Het onderzoek wordt steeds omvangrijker en de tijd dringt, nu er verdachten in bewaring zijn genomen. Flanegin was tot afgelopen dinsdag ziek thuis en had donderdag nog een strafzaak, waardoor ze niet eerder beschikbaar was.

Gisteren gingen er geruchten rond dat hoofdofficier van justitie Karin Janssen zou zijn vervangen door Flanegin. De Nederlandse zou slecht zijn gevallen bij een deel van het onderzoeksteam van de politie. Procureur-generaal Theresa Croes-Fernandes ontkent dit in alle toonaarden: “Mevrouw Janssen heeft gewoon de leiding. Dat mensen allerlei onware verhalen de ether insturen, vindt het OM heel vervelend, maar wij kunnen er niet verantwoordelijk voor worden gesteld.”



VERLENGING

De rechter-commissaris moet zich vanmiddag buigen over de verlenging met acht dagen van de inverzekeringstelling van de drie jongemannen die donderdag werden aangehouden.

Rechter-commissaris is de gewoonlijk op Curaçao werkzame strafrechter Dick van den Brink. Hij is intussen al op Aruba gearriveerd. “Dat is gedaan om iedere schijn van bevoordeling te voorkomen,” bevestigt Hofpresident van het Gemeenschappelijk Hof van Justitie van de Antillen en Aruba, Luis de Lannoy. De vader van een van de jongens is immers plaatsvervangend rechter. En elke indruk moet worden voorkomen dat een rechter wordt aangesteld die met de vader van de jongen bevriend is.

De advocaten reageren verontwaardigd op de arrestatie van hun cliënten. David Kock, advocaat van de 19-jarige Satish Kalpoe: “Volgens mij weet het OM het gewoon niet en arresteren ze maar. Hoe kan het nou dat ze zeggen alle opties open te houden en tegelijkertijd mijn cliënt toch verdenken van moord?” Rudy Oomen verdedigt de 21-jarige Deepak Kalpoe: “Het is mij een raadsel hoe je mensen kunt oppakken zonder bewijs. Ik heb nog niets gezien dat er op duidt dat het om een misdrijf gaat, en toch wordt mijn cliënt daarvan verdacht.”

De advocaat van Joran van der Sloot, Anthony Carlo, vertelt dat de 17-jarige student van de International School er donderdagavond vermoeid uit zag. Carlo zei vrijdagmiddag: “Ik heb verzocht of ik bij de verhoren aanwezig mocht zijn, maar het OM heeft dat niet toegestaan. Ik heb de jongen dus alleen maar even gezien nadat hij een hele dag was verhoord. Verder heb ik nog helemaal geen stukken gekregen en weet dus ook niet welke bewijzen het OM denkt te hebben. De stukken krijgen we vaak pas laat, vlak voor de voorgeleiding.”

Volgens Kock wordt de arrestatie gebruikt om meer informatie los te krijgen van de drie jongens. Kock: “Door arrestatie kun je bepaalde dwangmiddelen toepassen die je anders niet zou hebben. Het OM zegt de drie uit tactische overwegingen te hebben aangehouden, dus ik denk dat dat de reden is.”

Volgens Oomen ontkent Deepak Kalpoe, de oudste van de drie, iets met de verdwijning van Holloway te maken te hebben. Hij zou vanaf het begin hebben meegewerkt met de politie. Oomen: “En nu verschijnt hij met zijn foto en volle naam overal in de pers. Het is trial by media. Ik vind het natuurlijk heel vervelend voor de familie van het meisje, maar wat de families van deze drie jongens, en de jongens zelf, nu wordt aangedaan is ook verschrikkelijk.”

Voordat de jongens Holloway bij haar hotel zouden hebben afgezet zijn zij naar Arashi geweest. Bij het strand zou Van der Sloot met Holloway op de achterbank van de auto hebben zitten vrijen, terwijl de broers Kaploe voorin de auto zaten. Van der Sloot kende Holloway al van een dag eerder toen zij in het casino van het Holiday Inn kennis gemaakt zouden hebben.

De twee broers hebben tegen de politie verklaard dat Holloway aangeschoten was en na het verlaten van de auto bij de ingang van het Holiday Inn struikelde. Zij werd hier opgevangen door een donkere man met een zwart t-shirt en zwarte broek en een portofoon. Dit zou de reden kunnen zijn waarom twee bewakers van het leegstaande Allegrohotel afgelopen zondag werden opgepakt.

Ook de advocaten van deze twee mannen ontkennen dat hun cliënten iets met de zaak te maken hebben. De rechter-commissaris moet woensdag beslissen of er voldoende reden is de twee bewakers nog acht dagen vast te houden.



HULP

Aruba kan zeker vier dagen hulp krijgen van dertig mariniers bij de zoektocht naar Holloway. Dat heeft een woordvoerster van de Koninklijke Marine op de Nederlandse Antillen bevestigd vanuit Willemstad op Curaçao.

Minister-president Oduber van Aruba diende vrijdag een verzoek om militaire bijstand in bij de hoofdvestiging van de Koninklijke Marine op de Nederlandse Antillen. De militairen zijn van zaterdag tot en met dinsdag beschikbaar, als de lokale autoriteiten de zoektocht niet alleen afkunnen. Het gaat om zogeheten ‘zachte’ militaire bijstand, waarbij geen wapens worden gebruikt. Eerder zochten zeventig Nederlandse militairen drie dagen mee naar Holloway. Dat deden ze zonder dat Aruba daar om had gevraagd.

In totaal zijn sinds zondag vijf verdachten opgepakt. De andere twee verdachten zijn de bewakers Nick John (30) en Abraham Jones (28) van een hotel in de buurt van het hotel waar de scholiere verbleef. Zij werden afgelopen zondag gearresteerd. Alle vijf worden verdacht van moord, doodslag of ontvoering met de dood tot gevolg, of van het medeplegen van een van die feiten.

Van Holloway is al bijna twee weken geen spoor. Ze verdween aan het einde van een korte trip naar Aruba, samen met schoolgenoten en begeleiders. Ze was zondag 29 mei nog in het gezelschap van de drie vrienden, die haar volgens hun eigen verklaring na een avondje stappen bij haar hotel hebben afgezet. De volgende dag kwam ze echter niet opdagen op het vliegveld. Op Aruba wemelt het inmiddels van de Amerikaanse media. Tientallen journalisten zijn overgevlogen om de vermissingszaak te verslaan. De autoriteiten zijn bang dat de goede naam van het eiland als een van de veiligste in de regio door de vermissing wordt tenietgedaan.

The brothers have also changed their story, now saying they left their friend with Holloway at the beach that night, FOX has learned.
The Dutch teenager, 17-year-old Joran Van Der Sloot (search), and the Surinamese brothers, 18-year-old Satish Kalpoe (search) and 21-year-old Deepak Kalpoe (search), originally told police they brought Holloway to a lighthouse beside the island's Arisha Beach, but didn't get out of the car.

The Kalpoe brothers also told police that Holloway and Van Der Sloot were kissing passionately in the back seat of the car. They said they dropped her off at her hotel about 2 a.m. and last saw her being approached by a black man in a black security guard uniform before they drove off, a lawyer for the brothers has said.

Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway Twitty, told The Associated Press on Sunday that she believes the three young men still being held in the case "know what happened to her." She also said the two security guards should be released. (Full story)

The search for Holloway was scaled back during the weekend, with teams venturing out only after receiving credible tips and coast guard patrols off shore

Holloway vanished early May 30, hours before she was expected at the airport to return home after a five-day vacation with 124 classmates and seven chaperones celebrating graduation from Mountain Brook, Ala., High School. Her U.S. passport and packed bags were found in her room.

Hundreds of islanders and tourists have volunteered in daily searches for Holloway, whose plight has shocked residents in one of the safest destinations in the region. One murder and six rapes were recorded last year on the island of 97,000 people. This year there have been two murders and three rapes.

Net achter het Marriott is een groot, kaal gebied waar geen fuck te beleven valt... Niet veel verder ligt Arashi, en dat sluit bij aan op de Lighthouse.

Bij dat hotel zelf kun je niets uitspoken, dat is veel te druk.

After leaving Arashi /Lighthouse, they left Natalee with Joran at Fisher's mans hut a beach close to the Hyatt. They went to swim at that beach.

That was the last time they saw Natalee. They went home and went to the internet to chat. After one hour, they received a message from Joran that stated: "I have something to tell you"

This was statement of Micky John, detainee, that helped to secure his freedom yesterday.

Nat assured them that she was fine, and said she was going to go back to the hotel "with THEM," pointing to the MBHS group just a few yards ahead.

The Kalpoes were nowhere in sight; neither was the car.

Next Alana heard was that Natalee got into a car that many in the group had thought was a taxi. (Those look like regular cars.)

It may be that the Kalpoes pulled up on the street before Natalee reached the next group; Joran may have deliberately stalled her. The group may not have even realized she was behind them, approaching. But while we hear that she got in the car willingly, we know from her comments that it was not her pre-planned intention.

Because of this, I do not believe she knew she would be going anywhere but a fairly short distance down to the hotel. Her plans changed in the blink of an eye, and she was gone."

Three young men are in jail and have been undergoing questioning. They were the last people reported seen with Holloway. None has been formally charged.

Police have identified them as brothers Satish Kalpoe, 18, and Depak Kalpoe, 21, and their friend, Joran Van Der Sloot, 17, the son of an Aruban judge.

"The boys continue to point fingers at each other," the source said, but their attorneys said their clients are innocent.

"My client is maintaining that he is innocent and that he did not commit any crime," said Antonio Carlo, the attorney for Van Der Sloot.

Aruba government spokesman Ruben Trapenberg said he didn't know what prompted Tuesday's search.

"People have gone over the area [before] but not as intensely as this time," Trapenberg said, adding that every part of the island was being checked.

He said Aruba requested and had received additional technical assistance from Dutch and U.S. authorities, but didn't elaborate.

Holloway, from the Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook, has been missing more than two weeks. She was on a trip to Aruba with classmates and parent chaperones to celebrate her high school graduation.

The Kalpoes and Ver Der Sloot reportedly told police they took Holloway to a beach after leaving an Oranjestad nightclub with her early May 30. They said they returned her to her hotel, the Holiday Inn, not long afterward.

On Monday, authorities released two security guards arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Abraham Jones, 28, and Mickey John, 30, who work at a hotel near where the teen was staying, were arrested in the case June 5 but were never charged.

After his release, John said Depak Kalpoe confided to him while they were in jail together that he had lied to police. John said Kalpoe also apologized for getting Jones and him into "that mess." (CNN Access)

"He [Depak] told me that the story about dropping the girl off at the Holiday Inn was all made up," John said, adding that Kalpoe told him he and his brother dropped Van Der Sloot and Holloway off near a Marriott hotel and then went home.

The area searched Tuesday is near the Marriott, about a mile from the Holiday Inn where Holloway was staying.

John said Kalpoe told him the brothers figured Holloway would turn up "a few days after, in some crack house or beach bar."

He said Tuesday that Kalpoe should be more forthright with investigators.

"I think he's holding back something," John told CNN, describing Kalpoe as "very calm at all times."

The source close to the probe said the FBI has been briefing Holloway's parents in Aruba, and Holloway's mother said Tuesday she believes the investigation is moving forward.

"I feel like that we are working in a collaborative effort," Beth Holloway Twitty told CNN's "American Morning."

"From the family to the FBI to the local authorities to the Aruban government to the U.S. government, I feel like we are all in this investigation, and I do feel like we are beginning to proceed forward. ... That's where I want to go because that will help us find our daughter."

Twitty and her husband remain in Aruba, vowing not to leave the Caribbean island off Venezuela without Holloway.

"Some days, they are agonizing," Twitty said. "They are so difficult. And some days, I have the deepest hurt that anyone could ever imagine."

She said she wasn't aware of John's allegations that one of the three in custody told him he had lied to police.

"The best thing that we have to do is to allow the proper authorities now to do their investigation," Twitty said. "This is their expertise, and I feel the assurance and trust that we are moving in the right direction."

Aruban Prime Minister Nelson Oduber has said his government "is doing the utmost" to find Holloway.

"We hope that we will find Natalee Holloway alive and are still praying that there is nothing bad that has happened to her," Oduber said Sunday.

While expressing concern about Holloway, Oduber also sought to reassure the media that the island is safe for visitors, noting that more than 60 percent of its income comes from tourism and more than 45,000 Arubans work in that industry.

"That's why we make an appeal to our local press and international press that the government and everybody involved will do the job," he said.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (CNN) -- A search near an Aruba beachfront hotel that began in the afternoon ended Tuesday night with apparently no sign of 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, the Alabama student missing since May 30.

Investigators late Tuesday took down barricades and cordons that had been up for five and a half hours while searchers combed the area.

A source close to the probe said search participants included five FBI agents and a search dog from Miami-Dade County, Florida, in addition to Aruban police.

The area -- about 500 yards long and 150 yards wide -- contains mangroves, scrub brush and drainage ditches.

A fire truck brought in a pump that was used to drain parts of the property, which is sandwiched between the main highway that goes around the coast and the beach area next to the Marriott Hotel.

The area is known as a "lover's lane" for romantic couples.
