This car started life as a humble MX Diesel 4WD. We swapped a set of adjustable suspension for the car and the project began. Next we purchased a heavily crashed Evo and swapped everything onto the MX shell.
We could have stopped there with an Evo for under $8000 but where is the fun in that.

Goal
Our goal was to build a 10sec daily driver on a budget that we could also take to track days and handle the stresses of circuit racing. The car had to run on pump gas so it could be as fast on the street as on the track. The car owes us around $25000, which is pretty good considering what it is capable of.

Build Up
The engine (as usual) was the first place we began. We sold off the Evo engine and purchased an old VR4 block. This was stripped, bored 0.5mm over and a set of JE pistons and Eagle rods were fitted. The head was next with HKS cams, titanium retainers and heavy-duty valve springs fitted. The head was left unported.
The engine was mated to an aluminum flywheel (half the standard weight) and a single plate ACT clutch. We were worried that the clutch may not be up to the job but it has shown no sign of slipping.
To control the engine, we chose the Microtech LTX12. This is a well-proven computer that is reasonably priced. We would have loved to have installed a Motech but at 4-5 times the price, our budget would not allow it.
We handmade an exhaust manifold and commissioned MSE to build a turbo for us. To be honest, we don’t know the exact specs but Murch told us it was good for around 700 hp and that was all we needed to know. A Turbonetics 45mm wastegate was added to control the boost.
Lancer Water Injection Exhaust is a full 31/2 inch mandrel bent item made by us. It was a hell of a job to make fit but worth it in the end.
We got hold of an aftermarket intake manifold and added another fuel rail to give us 8 injectors. Obviously the standard fuel pump was not going to be able to handle the supply needs, so a 550hp in-tank pump was installed. This was backed up by a large Bosch fuel pump and surge tank in the boot.
The standard intercooler was wrecked, so a larger after market piece was added.
This was the end of all the major work with gauges, wheels, seats etc added as we went.

Dyno Time
It was time to Dyno the beast and see what we had done.
After 4 hours of tuning we had 513hp at the wheels or approx 650hp at the flywheel. This was fantastic but the smoke coming from the back of the car was not. With so much heat produced by the pump gas, we had blown a head gasket and we later found 2 pistons that had started to break down.
We were pretty pissed of by this but damn happy at the power output.

Rebuild
We decided to build another block and this time fitted a specially coated piston to handle the heat along with Pauter rods. These are very impressive rods.
We installed a water injection unit to make sure that temperatures were kept at a safe level.
Back to the dyno and power is now limited to 447hp at the wheels (approx 560hp at flywheel).

Racing
To date our best ¼ mile time is 11.28sec, which is good, but not quite what we want. Hopefully we will crack the 10’s before the winter drags finish.
It has been around Taupo and run mid 46’s with no problems at all.
Once we hit the 10’s the car will be sold to make way for another project.

AB-SO-LUUT niet

Ik ben er wel achter gekomen dat de huiskamer hier zo'n 10 graden warmer is dan de rest van het huis, maar ik heb geen zin om me te verplaatsen

Doet me denken aan het huis van mijn ex. Die wonen in een oude boerderij. Opzich een heel gaaf en mooi huis, maar in de zomer is het er werkelijk niet te hachelen

Ze hebben er een serre bij en daar was het vorige zomer op het toppunt 48 graden
