Reuters, it was reported that during the Sony conference, it was revealed that the next PlayStation will be called PlayStation 3, and it will be launched during 2006. Making use of the custom Cell chip, the system reportedly will include twice the processing power as the Xbox 360, including backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 2. The system, which supports the next-generation DVD format, Blu-Ray, will include built-in Ethernet port for net access, and two types of wireless networking, and a removable small hard drive.
"PS3 truly is the system to be placed in the center of living rooms in homes around the world," Ken Kutaragi, the head of Sony's game unit, said at a press event.

GameSpot sheds a bit more technical light on the system. According to the article, the PS3 discs will hold six times the data as current generation DVD's, supporting CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. The system's HDD will be 2.5 inches, and the system will support Memory Stick Duo, SD slots, and a compact flash memory slots. The actual Cell processor will run at 3.2 Ghz, with the entire system having 2.18 teraflops of overall performance, including 256mb of XDR main Ram at 3.2 Ghz, and 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.
