Juventus strike sponsorship oil

The Juventus club coffers have been boosted by a Ł76m deal with Tamoil, making them the top earning European side from shirt sponsorship.

The Turin giants have signed a five-year contract with the petrol company to sponsor their shirts in all competitions from July 2005, expanding on their current agreement on Champions’ League and Coppa Italia jerseys.


Libyan company Tamoil also have an option to extend the deal for another five years for an extra Ł90m should the co-operation be deemed successful.


Currently, the Serie A leaders’ shirts are sponsored by Sky Sport Italia in the League and ensure Juve are the European club with the highest income from shirt sponsorship.


According to Sporteconomy, the Bianconeri will earn Ł15.2m per season, considerably more than second-placed Bayern Munich’s annual income of Ł11.7m from T-Mobile. Siemens provide Real Madrid with Ł9.7m per season, while Manchester United pick up Ł9m from Vodafone.


Three of the top ten shirt sponsorship earners hail from Serie A, with Milan in ninth place and Inter closing the list.

Napoli legend Diego Armando Maradona has offered his services to the San Paolo outfit.

The Argentine, who led the Azzurri to two League titles and a UEFA Cup in the late 1980s, is ready to return to the port city despite his health problems.

"It would be pleasing to go back and be a part of that club again," the 1986 World Cup winner told ‘Cronache di Napoli’.

Napoli have struggled in recent years but there is new hope for the future after film maker Aurelio De Laurentiis took charge of the Serie C outfit this summer.

"He is the best President that the club have ever had," continued Maradona. "That place is full of resources and De Laurentiis knows how to take Napoli on to the world stage.

"De Laurentiis and myself are the same as we keep our promises. I said we would win the title when I joined and we did. He’ll do the same.

"I know him well as we made a film together (Tifosi in 1999). De Laurentiis will succeed where others have failed."

Maradona also paid tribute to the passionate Napoli fans, who are still turning out in force despite the Division they find themselves in.

"I’m not surprised that 60,000 go to watch Serie C games," he added. "The fans deserve to have a great team again."

If there was one criticism of the way that the impressive Zlatan Ibrahimovic has settled into the world of Italian football, it was his lack of deadliness in front of goal. But five goals in his last two League games have given some substance to the claims that Juventus have indeed signed the new Marco Van Basten.

Ibrahimovic has enjoyed a splendid first season in Serie A since his Ł11m move from Ajax on transfer deadline day in the summer. Although he had been linked with the Turin giants for some time and had caught the eye with that back-heeled stunner against Italy at Euro 2004, not too many expected the Swede to be so super.

It can even be argued that he arrived at the Delle Alpi as third choice attacker behind David Trezeguet and Alex Del Piero. That statement seems laughable right now because the youngster is undoubtedly the first name down on the team-sheet when Fabio Capello ponders his offensive options. Who knows where Juve’s Scudetto bid would be without him?

Ibrahimovic seems well on the way to becoming a complete striker. He’s got power, some great technical ability – which is a hindrance at times seeing as he does overindulge in the sublime – and now an eye for goal.

Although he has incredibly failed to score in the Champions’ League this term, Ibrahimovic is his side’s top scorer in Serie A with 15. That’s the same amount as Adriano and just one shy of Parma’s Alberto Gilardino – the player Juve opted to ‘ignore’ on the transfer market in August.

The Scandinavian ace already netted a brace last weekend during the 3-3 draw at Fiorentina before his latest heroics on Sunday. With Del Piero suffering another anonymous afternoon and Trezeguet ruled out with injury yet again, the spotlight was well and truly on Ibrahimovic who netted a hat-trick in the 5-2 destruction of Lecce.

It was a performance which took his side back to the top of the table and a display which won wide praise from a club, who some thought had taken a gamble on such an individual. "He is a complete player who can score from any angle and by any method," said director general Luciano Moggi, the man responsible for his capture. "Ibrahimovic is an important player for not only the present but also for the future of Juventus."

Although it’s always difficult to speculate what Juventus’ summer transfer plans are, as Ibrahimovic’s surprise signing itself illustrates, there seems no doubt that Ibra is a player the Old Lady are counting on for some time to come. It is more likely that Del Piero and Trezeguet will leave Turin before this striker heads for the exit.

Juventus claim they are amazed and worried by the three-match ban given to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and will appeal, while Milan see their Scudetto chances boosted.

“We will lodge an immediate appeal against this decision,” revealed director general Luciano Moggi. “The Disciplinary Commission’s findings were like a bolt from the blue.”

Ibrahimovic was caught on camera striking out at Ivan Cordoba during Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Inter when the ball was in the other half of the pitch.

The Swede was also involved in another incident during the same game, in which he tried to head butt Sinisa Mihajlovic.

“We really weren’t expecting this, especially as none of the newspapers or television programmes had really zoned in on that situation,” continued Moggi.

“We hope to have the ban reduced on appeal, as if it stands then he would be suspended for the May 8 encounter with Milan. I can confess that we are worried.”

The Bianconeri will already be without the injured David Trezeguet and possibly Jonathan Zebina for that Scudetto showdown, so to lose their top scorer as well would be a heavy blow.

Player of the Week: Toldo (Inter)

Francesco Toldo was undoubtedly the hero of Inter’s 1-0 win over Juventus at the Stadio Delle Alpi on Wednesday. The goalkeeper was literally unbeatable, not only helping to maintain his side’s record as Serie A’s most in-form outfit of 2005, but also keeping alive the title hopes of city rivals Milan.

It has not been a great campaign thus far for Toldo, with club owner Massimo Moratti hinting that the veteran ‘keeper may be on his way out at the end of the season. But the 33-year-old has responded in the best way possible.

Against League leaders Juventus in Week 32, the shot-stopper made a string of fantastic saves, most of which came against Zlatan Ibrahimovic. And when he was finally beaten, the frame of the goal came to his aid on two occasions.

After Julio Cruz gave Inter the lead in the first half, it was a dominant second-half display from the Bianconeri, with Toldo making at least three match-winning saves from the super Swede. As well as a fierce free kick from Ibra, Toldo performed heroics again as the international chested down and rifled a shot towards goal, only to see the massive ‘keeper palm it away.

The former Fiorentina man has undoubtedly been one of Inter’s best players since the turn of the year and perhaps deserves to stay at the club for another season. With speculation rife, however, of a possible return for current Parma ‘keeper Sebastien Frey, Toldo’s future at the club remains uncertain.

Although the San Siro giants have lost just once in the League, to neighbours Milan, they are too far off the pace to worry the Serie A leaders. Going out to the Rossoneri in the Champions’ League quarter-finals effectively ended their major goals for the season and could have signaled the end of Toldo’s time in Milan.

Toldo’s early season form with Inter was so indifferent that he was dropped by Roberto Mancini, who favoured veteran Alberto Fontana for a time. However, even he proved unreliable between the sticks as Mancio searched for some consistency at the back. Now, with Toldo back in goal, Inter have the best defensive record of 2005, conceding just 11 - better than both Milan and Juventus.

Whether Toldo is forced out of the Nerazzurri or if he decides to quit the club in the summer remains to be seen. However, one thing is for certain. With so many English clubs desperate for a world class ‘keeper, the former Italian international won’t be short of suitors – especially if he puts in a few more performances like the one against Juventus.

Cannavaro in ‘drug video’ row

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro is at the centre of the latest drugs row to hit Italian football.

Italian state broadcasters RAI last night showed a video, taken by Cannavaro himself, in which the Juventus stopper is seen using a drip the day before the 1999 UEFA Cup Final.

Cannavaro is viewed in a Moscow hotel room with numerous of his then Parma teammates, on the eve of their 3-0 win over Marseille, taking Neoton via a drip.

The drug is normally used in cardiac surgery but is not a banned substance as Cannavaro’s lawyer, who was present in the debate show studio, was quick to point out.

"Neoton helps to regenerate muscle and it is not on the banned list," Paolo Trofino said, after Cannavaro had declined to be a part of the programme.

"We were concerned about the damage it might do to his image," continued Trofino.

"If you go into a player's room the night before a big match and you see him with a drip, obviously that's going to be a shocking image. People might jump to conclusions."

The player had warned RAI on Thursday afternoon that he would assess his legal options if he was accused of anything illegal.

Although Neoton is a legal substance, RAI’s decision to make public the home video will do little for the player’s image.

Something that club colleague Lilian Thuram, both now and then at Parma, is well aware of.

"It creates an image of players that dope themselves up before each match," said the stopper.

"We often play around with video cameras in the dressing rooms, but certain things are seen differently from the outside.

"Unfortunately we live in a world where people try to dirty and destroy even the little that remains clean.

"A player who has given so much to football and to the Italian national team deserves respect."
