Bono leads celebs charge to eradicate world poverty

Celebrities are launching a year-long campaign today to put pressure on governments to eradicate world poverty.

Bono, Claudia Schiffer, Scarlett Johansson, Jamelia, Fran Healey from Travis, Busted, the Sugarbabes, Graham Norton and Stephen Fry are among those who have signed up to the Make Poverty History campaign.

The campaign, supported by more than 100 charities, unions and faith groups, is calling on Tony Blair and other world leaders to deliver trade justice, debt cancellation and better aid provision for the world’s poor.

Travis’s Fran Healey, who recently returned from a trip to Africa with Save the Children, said: “No-one can be oblivious or ignorant to the plight of the poor, nor to the responsibility our governments have as architects of their poverty.

“We must take this opportunity in 2005 to make poverty history once and for all,” he said.

The campaign is timed to coincide with Britain’s chairing of the G8 and, later this year, the presidency of the European Union.

The Make Poverty History coalition this week issued a challenge to the Prime Minister to address the problems of trade, aid and debt.

Campaigner Bob Geldof said: “This is about firing the starting pistol to the year of 2005 when Britain is the chair of the G8 and the president of the EU. The reality is that only politics created this dilemma and only politics can resolve it.”

U2 frontman Bono said: “We can make extreme poverty history, I really believe that. The kind of stupid poverty where kids are dying for the lack of an immunisation that costs 20 cents, or for lack of food in a world of plenty. Don’t we want to be the generation that says no to that?”

The Make Poverty History coalition has also launched a white band, which they hope celebrities and the public will be wearing this year to show solidarity with their cause.

A MASSIVE Live Aid-style concert for victims of the Asian tsunami is being planned.

Among the stars being approached to play at the 65,000 capacity Millennium Stadium in Cardiff are U2, Coldplay and Robbie Williams. News of the concert came as ex-Radio 1 DJ Mike Read unveiled plans for a charity single, featuring Cliff Richard, Boy George and Ronan Keating. It's hoped millions of pounds will be raised for aid to countries stricken by the Boxing Day disaster.

The move has been welcomed by the Disasters Emergency Committee, who are co-ordinating the British relief effort. The two-day Cardiff concert aims to raise more than £1million. Stadium general manager Paul Sergeant 'We hope to sell between 60,000 and 65,000 tickets. But time is going to be very tight.'

He hopes to announce the line-up tomorrow and start selling tickets on Friday for the gig over the weekend of January 22 and 23.

Mr Sergeant added: 'As soon as the enormity of the disaster was known, we opened discussions with a number of musical agents to see if it would be possible to get a money-spinning event up and running.

Family illness pushes back "Bomb" trek

U2 have postponed their much-anticipated tour behind How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, originally scheduled to kick off March 1st in Miami. "All of the plans are in total flux," a source close to the band told Rolling Stone, citing a family illness as the reason for the change. Tour dates were to be announced and go on sale this month, but those plans have been delayed.

The band, which is nominated for three Grammys for the single "Vertigo," still intends to play the February 13th awards ceremony in Los Angeles and to attend its induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 14th in New York. However, a new timeline for the tour has not been set.

According to longtime tour designer Willie Williams, the tour's stage and video screens are in the process of being built. "We are developing some new technologies to deliver visual content," he told Rolling Stone.

U2's last world tour, in support of All That You Can't Leave Behind, made them the top-grossing act of 2001.
