Mandorlini doesn’t fear axe

Atalanta boss Andrea Mandorlini insists that he is not worried about being sacked by the club.

The Bergamo boys are bottom of the table and lost again on Sunday when Reggina collected a 1-0 win.

"The season is a long one," said Mandorlini, whose side have yet to win in the League so far this term.

"I admit that we are very disappointed because we wanted to win but conceded an incredible own goal instead.

"My job? I’m not worried about losing it. Everyone at this club must just remain calm so that we can pick ourselves up."

Nerazzurri director general Roberto Zanzi also insisted that Mandorlini isn’t facing the chop.

However, whispers circulating in the peninsula suggest that President Ivan Ruggeri is seriously considering his options.

Caso facing the sack?

Domenico Caso’s stint as Lazio boss could soon be coming to an end, according to reports in Italy.

The capital outfit lost 3-2 at home to Cagliari on Sunday which led to some heavy criticism of the tactician.

Caso was jeered by some sections of the crowd and he is believed to have held talks with President Claudio Lotito after the game.

It’s alleged that the two men spoke for around 45 minutes in an effort to reach some sort of conclusion regarding the outfit’s poor form.

Lazio have now picked up just eight points from a possible 21 and are facing UEFA Cup elimination too.

Although Caso seems safe for the time being, Lotito could opt for a change if results don’t improve.

Possible candidates to replace Caso are former Siena boss Giuseppe Papadopulo, ex-Toro tactician Giancarlo Camolese and Italian legend Dino Zoff.

However, there is also the option of promoting Cristiano Bergodi to the job – as he is currently Caso’s No 2 at the Stadio Olimpico.

In Bologna was eerder dat seizoen, 4 November 2001, met 3-2 verloren.

Milan are looking at Roma’s Cristian Chivu as a long-term replacement for the legendary Paolo Maldini.

The 36-year-old is expected to end his career in the summer of 2006 and the Rossoneri are already planning ahead.
Chivu is liked because he has the versatility of the Italian given that he can play as a centre-back and a left-back.

Reports suggest that Franco Baresi, who is currently in charge of the Milan Primavera side, has urged his club to take an interest.

The Romanian did impress many in his first Serie A campaign following his 2003 switch from Ajax.
However, he’s hardly played so far this term after having surgery twice on a broken foot injury.

Chivu could be sold by Roma at the end of the season, who are still struggling financially, if a big enough offer is made.
The 24-year-old has also been strongly associated with both Inter and Juventus in the past.
The latter could be especially keen as Chivu worked remarkably well under boss Fabio Capello last term.

Legrottaglie wins dud award

Nicola Legrottaglie of Juventus has netted an unwanted award after being named as the biggest flop of 2004.

The central defender has been assigned the ‘Bidone d’Oro 2004’ after listener votes compiled by Radio 2 Rai programme Catersport.

Legrottaglie, who succeeds former Milan player Rivaldo, has had a nightmare time since joining the Turin giants in the summer of 2003.

His debut campaign at the Stadio Delle Alpi was poor and he rarely features under new boss Fabio Capello.

Legrottaglie is joined by some illustrious names on this year’s podium as Inter’s Christian Vieri came second, while Alex Del Piero of Juventus was third. Inter’s Marco Materazzi finished fourth.
