[PTA SC] Toyota Prius 295 foot-pounds of torque

For 2004, Toyota's advanced gas/electric hybrid introduces its second generation. All-new and larger, the 2004 Toyota Prius now has the commodious interior and roomy cargo area that North Americans like. Attractive styling with a hatch-style trunk is unique; in fact, everything about the Prius is different. Power from the electric/gasoline combination has increased yet fuel mileage is even better.

How Much?: Price for a 2004 Toyota Prius in the US is $20,510. Nine available packages can add up to $5245 in extras but the list of optional features is extensive.



The Inside Story: Opens with a remote transmitter instead of a key. Instruments are in a "cave" atop the dash, instruments are digital. An electrically-powered standard air-conditioner uses no fuel to operate. Headroom and legroom are plentiful, liftback hatch opens to versatile cargo space. Options include seat-mounted side and front-and-rear side-curtain airbags, JBL Premium Radio/Cassette/6-disc in-dash CD changer with nine speakers or a voice-activated DVD navigation system with hands-free phone capability.

Under the Hood: The electric motor has 295 foot-pounds of torque, giving the 2004 Toyota Prius better than adequate acceleration. On an interstate, at steady speed, the 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine bears the load. Thus, in a reverse of what's normal, the 2004 Toyota Prius returns 60 miles per gallon in town, 51 on the highway.



Transmissions: The only transmission is a belt-driven CVT (continuously variable) that suits the hybrid power combo perfectly.

Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles, 5-year/60,000-mile Powertrain, 8-year/100,000-mile Hybrid-related Component.

Should You Buy a 2004 Toyota Prius?: Until now, the only reason to buy any hybrid would have been your deep-rooted concern for the environment. The all-new 2004 Toyota Prius, however, is so good (our About Cars test driver gave it a 5-star rating) that you can feel quite safe in buying one for its handsome and practical styling, its very spacious and versatile interior, its ride and handling and, of course, that phenomenal mileage. The silence and smoothness of the gasoline engine/electric motor combined with CVT is limousine-like but should you get bored, well, you can always be entertained by the instruments, which indicate where the power's coming from. Ik vind em ook niet mooi



wel beter dan zijn voorganger, in Japan rijden er trouwens ook "gewone" hybrides rond, zoals de Previa, Corolla enz, dus het kan wel.
