THE CHIMAERA IS almost the forgotten TVR. Think TVR and the fire-breathing Griffith comes to mind. That's the car which set the Blackpool company on its new course, the one that marked the end of TVRs that were all adrenalin, testosterone and warranty claims. The Chimaera may not be the attention grabber, but it's the one you see most of, as it's the best-selling model. It is less aggressive than the Griffith, though it can be ordered with the Griffith 500's 5.0-litre V8.
Now there is another engine choice for the Chimaera. Slotting in between the 340bhp 500 engine and the cooking 4.0-litre motor is a new TVR Power-tweaked 4.5-litre Rover V8. Power output is 285bhp at 5500rpm, with 310lb ft of torque at 4250rpm. Although these figures are somewhat less than the 500 can muster (it has 350lb ft of torque at 4500rpm), the Chimaera is the better for it. Call me a wimp if you like, but the 500 engine is a little over the top. Relatively light weight and a short wheelbase are a nerve-wracking combination when they're matched to 340bhp. Chuck in a wet road and things can get out of hand very quickly.
The 450 engine is the perfect compromise. The 4.5-litre Chimaera is seriously fast, make no mistake. The difference between it and the 500 engine is that the power, and more importantly the torque, come in with less of a bang. Even on a wet road you can drive it hard, without feeling that the whole plot may launch itself into a field should you make even the smallest mistake.
