The Go! Team

Leuk nieuw bandje dat na een aantal succesvolle indiesingles een debuutalbum (genaamd Thunder, Lightning, Strike) heeft uitgebracht.
Denk aan een maffe, overstuurde en aanstekelijke kakefonie aan geluid met blazers, scratching, breakbeats, mondharmonica, vrolijke jaren '70 grooves en vage koortjes, en die klinkt als de Jackson Five on speed, geremixed door The Avalanches - zonder dat er een sampletje bij komt kijken, want The Go! Team schijnt ook een degelijke liveband te zijn. Het resultaat is in elk geval redelijk uniek, al zal het zeker niet iedereen aanspreken.
Misschien wel niet het beste dat er dit jaar zal worden uitgebracht, maar wel een van de leukste en uniekste (qua geluid) vanuit de indie-underground.

Een aantal liedjes van hun debuutalbum is in elk geval te beluisteren vanaf hun site, dus doe er je voordeel mee. Het zijn weliswaar niet de beste nummers van het album (Bottle Rocket en Everyone is a V.I.P. to someone zijn mijn persoonlijke favorieten), al is het instrumentale Junior Kickstart wat je kunt beluisteren zeker niet verkeerd - en het zijn stuk voor stuk nummers die in menig Amerikaanse indie-club de vloer wisten te vullen.
Een beetje fout en behoorlijk vaag, maar wel lekker.

nothing else in 2004 sounds as much fun as this does ..
at last its here. (full title : thunder lightning strike) after the release of 2 rip roaring genre busting singles we get the album from the mysterious go! team. anyone who has heard last years 'junior kickstart' will know that to describe the sound here is not easy. sonic youth guitars, 60's theme tunes, happy horns, harmonica solo's and a school yard innocence is thrown together through the lowest quality production possible all in 2.5 minutes of chaos - and that's just the one track ! naturally the folks behind this creation decided that if it aint broke .. dont fix it. so the album has many more tracks of the same funk. with some subtle left hand turns en route throughout.

kicking things off in a mad vibrant style is 'panther dash' an instrumental that crying out for a dayglo 60's party to soundtrack, its a whirlwind of a track with its 'everything but the kitchen sink' groove (trumpets/harmonicas/guitars etc etc) leaving the listener breathless and relieved when we hit the old school blockparty groove of 'ladyflash' with its vocal loops (sampled from an old school hip hop jams ?) and fun funk, scratches and electro slammed up against the addictive female vocals of 'yeah yeah yeah's. has someone been listening to old rock steady crew classics recently ? next comes my fave track - 'feelgood by numbers', 2 minutes of a wonderfully happy clappy vibes piano riff, in which you can see snoopy and woodstock rocking out, on top of which is another harmonica solo adding a degree of melancholy, which is no bad thing considering the overall mood of the album is party party party, that is, until the parents return from the school pta meeting.

other highlights include the recorder solo in 'get it together' ( the recorder ! ferrchrissakes .. i hate that instrument .. but in this setting they rock ..), the scratched up extras at the end of the track, showing the gang know how to dip their collective toes into the old 60's tv theme tune cliches as well as knowing all about the modern world of cut-n-paste. somebody is far too talented methinks. there is a plan, a schemer behind this album, or just a sonic prankster ?

ahh .. who cares .. just get 'bottle rocket' on loop and i challenge you to stop the smiles from breaking out, featuring another female rap that betty boo would be proud of, set to more mad splattering of horns, clatterfunk drums, and harmonica solos - hurray!

i should also tell you about 'friendship update', and 'huddle formation' where the sonic ingredients are the same as the rest of the album, girls shout happy phrases, horns are blasted and guitars are ripped up, as is the school rule book, making it sound like the beginning of the summer holidays has started and the carefree world is all theirs, lucky monkeys. and then not forgetting the closer 'everyones a vip to someone' which finishes things off in the most wonderful rosy warm glow, orchestrated strings, 'midnight cowboy'-esque moodswing fashion. wonderful stuff.

to summarise, there is no-one else that sounds like the go! team. there is no other album like this album. a genuinely perfect 35 minutes in all its phil spector, wall of sound, sunshine soundtrack glory.

Ik denk ook niet dat deze de tand des tijds echt zal doorstaan, maar momenteel weet het regelmatig een glimlach en een redelijk vrolijk gevoel bij me op te wekken. Dit is lekker onbezorgd, perfect ook voor dit nazomerse weer.

Alles wat je hoort op de CD is in ieder geval met live-instrumenten ingespeeld, en het schijnt dat ze een behoorlijk goede live-show weten neer te zetten. Voorlopig zit er alleen nog geen tour richting Nederland in de planning, jammer genoeg.

Je kunt het natuurlijk beter horen dan lezen, dus gelukkig kun je 3 nummertjes per dag beluisteren op hun website. En zelfs Pitchfork geeft het plaatje een goed cijfer. Nou ja, zodra ze gaan doorbreken zal dat cijfer wel omlaag kelderen.

Des te meer reden om het gewoon zelf eens aan een luisterbeurt te onderwerpen.

En de band is niet echt onbekend meer, inderdaad. Qua touren zie ik op de site jammer genoeg niks staan over eventuele komsten naar festivals in de Benelux, even afwachten nog. Alhoewel ik de plaat nog steeds erg fijn vind, is het nieuwigheidje er wel een beetje af (zoals verwacht, eigenlijk); ben benieuwd hoe dit live is.

En ze touren best regelmatig door de States, inderdaad. ze staan bijvoorbeeld ook op het Intonation Festival, waar Pitchforkmedia (!) haar naam aan verbonden heeft. Je kunt veel zeggen van Pitchfork, maar het is toch langzamerhand tot een soort householdname aan het uitgroeien in de VS (of in elk geval binnen bepaalde kringen).

Exclusive: Go! Team Talk New Single and Album

There's something about those Brits. No matter how winsome and charming they are, there's a malevolent streak underneath the smiles. And for their as-yet-untitled new album, due out next year, the Go! Team will explore the hidden side of anger.

In an interview with Pitchfork on Thursday, the band's de-facto leader, Ian Parton, revealed that the Team have just finished recording the single "Doing It Right", which will is tentatively scheduled to be released in September. The track, which has been performed live a number of times and is described by Parton as "quite heavy on the 60s girl-group, Northern Soul kind of feel, Phil Spector-y, but with chanty vocals in it as well," will be accompanied by two B-sides. One of the B-sides is a cover of Sonic Youth's "Bull in the Heather." (It can be heard on the band's MySpace page right now.) The single was produced by Parton and his brother Gareth at Fortress Studios in London. A video is also planned.

As for the new album, the Go! Team plan to camp out in a recording space in Brighton beginning next week. When asked what direction the record will take, Parton replied that three tracks give an indication as to where the band is headed: the aforementioned "Doing it Right", a recorded version of the "Ladyflash" B-side "The Wrath of Mikey, to which the band plan to add vocals, and "Titanic Vandalism". The last track in particular is a potential "blueprint" for the new album, with its soundtrack atmosphere and "car chase" mood.

Though Parton said that the band's cheekiness and sassiness will remain firmly intact, he envisions the album "to be more experimental in a way. It will still sound like the Go! Team, I think, but there'll be more stuff like feedback and a kind of bigger production. A bigger sounding record in a way, but still in a lo-fi style. I don't really want it to sound super slick or anything like that. I think having that kind of homemade feel to it is essential. I want to possibly get a more violent feel to it in some ways, something a bit like Public Enemy."

He added, "I just want to get a bit more angry. It's kind of a mix between a blaxploitation soundtrack kind of feel with a discordant guitar-y sort of thing as well." Fight the power (is on).

The Go! Team lineup has undergone a change since last year, with Kaori Tsuchida replacing Silke Steidinger. Discussing Tsuchida's noise-band background and unusual vocal style as complementing that of lead singer/rapper Ninja, Parton said, "That's kind of what I want to do, is mix that kind of noisy, riot grrrl-y type feel with more of an old school kind of hip-hop feel and a kind of 60s Phil Spector-y kind of feel as well. That, for me, are all my favorite things rolled up into one." Hey, ours, too!

The Go! Team will hit the road in July, with a bunch of festival dates, and a brief U.S. tour scheduled. The highlight of the summer, however, will be their shows supporting Sonic Youth. Performing with the New York legends is a "personal dream come true" for Parton. When asked how the dates came about, Parton is mystified: "I don't know, actually. I think they'd heard of us, anyway. We befriended Mike Watt. He was playing with the Stooges when we did the Big Day Out, this festival in Australia. He watched us quite a few times and kind of played with us on stage actually in Australia and he did again the other day in Coachella. So he was kind of bigging us up to Thurston I think because he's always in touch, so that might've helped. We gotta thank Mike for that."

Er was aanvankelijk ook een gerucht dat ze dit jaar op Lowlands zouden staan, maar vooralsnog is er nog niks bekend over een optreden aldaar. Ze staan op de 19e 20e augustus wel op een festival in Engeland, dus ze zijn in ieder geval wel in de buurt dan.

Kevin Shields had een tijdje terug ook al wat nummers van the Go! Team geremixt, maar die schijnen niet echt geweldig geweest te zijn.
