Hurricane Season 2004

In Amerika is het nieuwe "Hurricane Season" weer begonnen. Eind Juni is normaal de tijd dat het 'stormen-seizoen' weer begint en dat duurt tot ongeveer November. Naar aanleiding van documentaires op discovery over o.a. Hurricane Andrew uit 1992 terug een topic over het Hurricane Season.
Zijn d'r meer "liefhebbers" van dit soort docs? Mensen die het aandachtig volgen?

De stormen worden ingedeeld op categorie. Vaak zijn het eerst "tropische stormen" (Tropical Cyclones) die overgaan op Orkaanstatus (Hurricane) Ze worden ingedeeld op windsnelheden.

De stormen, die vaak gevormd worden op de atlantische oceaan en dan richting de Caribbean of de Oostkust van de VS gaan, krijgen de naam op Alfabetische volgorde. Voor het seizoen 2004 zijn de naam al bekend: (De pacificische oceaan kent ook zo'n systeem , maar voorlopig houd ik het even op de Caribbean)

Hurricane Alex was de eerste dit seizoen. Alhoewel het seizoen "pas laat" op gang kwam. Alex was in de geschiedenis de op vier na 'laatste' storm die het seizoen inluidde. Ironisch genoeg was Andrew in 1992 de storm die pas vrij laat het seizoen in luidde, namelijk op 22 augustus pas.

Hurricane Alex bracht echter geen probleem want de orkaan deed geen land aan. Op dit moment is de storm een categorie 2 met windsnelheden gemeten boven de 100 mp/h. De orkaan draaide vorige week al af van de oostkust van de USA en zal waarschijnlijk oplossen boven de Atlantische Oceaan. Wel zullen de Britse eilanden nog last gaan krijgen met veel regen en wind in de loop van de week, waarschijnlijk uitloopsels van de storm.

Graag zou ik met meer mensen die er wat verstand van hebben of die zich er voor interesseren artikelen over Tropische Stormen/Orkanen in dit onderwerp willen zien. Hopelijk kan dat serieus.

MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- Tropical Storm Bonnie formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, the second named storm of the 2004 Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The Miami-based hurricane center said Bonnie was packing winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and was 410 miles (660 km) south of the mouth of the Mississippi river, moving slowly northwest in a loop that could take it toward the Florida Panhandle.

The storm's winds were forecast to increase in strength over the next three days to 60 mph (97 kph), a forecaster at the center said.

Bonnie's position at 4 p.m. CDT (5 p.m. EDT/2100 GMT) was near latitude 23.2 north, longitude 88.7 west, north of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The tropical storm season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Hurricane Alex last week flooded hundreds of homes and cars as it grazed the Outer Banks, a popular tourist spot, off the coast of North Carolina.

The swirling weather systems that become tropical storms and hurricanes are given names when their winds reach 39 mph (63 kph). Storms become hurricanes at 74 mph (119 kph)

Heb gister of eergister die docu over stormen op discovery gezien. Dat ze naar strand gaan en er een duindoorbraak is en dat er een van die stormchasers bijna verdrinkt en wordt meegesleurd zee in. Heel interresant !!

Namen willen inderdaad wel eens verwijderd worden. Meestal gebeurd dit inderdaad als een storm te krachtig was en immense verwoestingen heeft aangericht zoals Floyd, Andrew en Hugo.
Staat allemaal op die site die ik net gaf.

Jamaica issues hurricane watch for Charley

(CNN) -- The Jamaican government issued a hurricane watch late Tuesday as it braced for Tropical Storm Charley, which continues to strengthen in the Caribbean.

A second storm -- Bonnie -- is still eyeing the Florida panhandle for a possible landfall in the next few days.

At 11 p.m. ET, Charley's winds topped 65 mph, and it could become a hurricane on Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. A minimal hurricane has winds of at least 74 mph.

Charley is about 300 miles east-southeast of Kingston, moving west-northwest at 25 mph. The storm's center is expected to approach Jamaica's coast Wednesday morning as the storm strengthens over the next 24 hours. (Map: Charley's predicted path)

The Cayman Islands has also issued a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning, and storm warnings are also in effect in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Bonnie's winds decreased to 45 mph, according to the NHC's 11 p.m. update. Earlier in the day, the storm's winds reached 60 mph.

Bonnie remains a small storm, its tropical storm winds reaching only 30 miles from its center, while Charley's storm-strength winds extend more than 100 miles from center.

Forecasters' models show Charley passing directly over Jamaica and the smaller, eastern-most Cayman Islands, then passing over western Cuba late Thursday. The storm then enters the Gulf of Mexico, along the Florida coast.

Bonnie, the second named storm of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season, could be the first to crash ashore. The first named storm, Hurricane Alex, skirted the Outer Banks of North Carolina last week before heading out to sea.

Tropical Storm Charley May Strengthen Into Hurricane (Update2)

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Tropical Storm Charley may strengthen into a hurricane later today as it heads through the Caribbean toward Jamaica, U.S. government forecasters said.

The tropical storm is about 160 miles (257 kilometers) east- southeast of Jamaica and is moving at 24 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 5 a.m. Miami time. A hurricane watch was issued for the Florida Keys, which means hurricane conditions are possible within 36 hours. Charley's winds are gusting at about 65 miles (105 kilometers) per hour.

``Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours and Charley could become a hurricane during the next day or so,'' the center said on its Web site.

The hurricane season in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, which lasts from June 1 to Nov. 30, often disrupts oil production. Another tropical storm, Bonnie, yesterday forced companies including Royal Dutch/Shell Group to evacuate workers from rigs and close some platforms in the Gulf as a precaution.

Bonnie is moving slowly in the U.S. Central Gulf and winds have eased to 45 miles per hour from 50 miles per hour, the Miami- based agency said. The center of the storm was 265 miles south- southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The storm, which was moving north at 5 miles an hour, may turn to the northeast later today, the hurricane center said.

Tropical Storm Charley becomes Hurricane Charley - Florida cautious



MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Residents across the state of Florida are keeping tabs on weather reports Thursday as two storms threaten to pound the northern and southern parts of the state with heavy rains and hurricane-force winds.

Tropical Storm Bonnie continues to move steadily toward the state's Panhandle beaches, although it has lost some of its power. Hurricane Charley has become stronger as it eyes the Cayman Islands, before moving into warmer waters on its way toward the Gulf of Mexico.



Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center predict Bonnie will hit the Panhandle sometime Thursday afternoon and Charley could cross over the Florida Keys Thursday night.

Visitors were ordered to leave the western Florida Keys as Charley passed south of Jamaica on Wednesday.

"Much of the state of Florida is going to experience some impact from both Bonnie and Charley," said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

An Air Force plane flew into the storm and determined that Bonnie has weakened slightly and continued to disorganize, according to the weather center's 2 a.m. update.

The storm was about 240 miles southwest of Apalachicola, Florida, with top sustained winds at 50 mph. Moving northeast at 12 mph, Bonnie is expected to pick up speed over the next 24 hours, the hurricane center reported. (Map: Bonnie's predicted path)

Forecasters posted a hurricane warning from Destin, Florida, to the mouth of the Suwanee River. Hurricane watches and tropical storm warnings extended west from Destin to the Alabama state line, and forecasters warned of flooding as already-saturated Panhandle counties face four to six additional inches of rainfall.

The Navy on Wednesday took steps to protect aircraft at its flight training bases around Pensacola, moving 83 training jets and helicopters to several airfields at inland cities such as St. Louis, Dallas and Atlanta. No ships have yet been moved out of the way of the impending storms, Navy officials said.

Charley
At 2 a.m. Thursday, Charley gained strength as it heads toward the Cayman Islands, with top wind speeds at 85 mph. The storm is still a Category 1 hurricane centered about 165 miles (265 km) east-southeast of Grand Cayman, moving west-northwest at 15 mph (23 km/h).

Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are forecast.

Hurricane warnings remained in effect for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, while western Cuba, the Florida Keys and a 200-mile stretch of Florida's west coast south of St. Petersburg were under a hurricane watch.

"People need to start paying very close attention and making their preparations now," Mayfield said.

In the Jamaican capital Kingston, the city's airport was closed amid heavy rain and high winds.

"This morning, when they realized that the storm was heading Jamaica's way, everybody started to batten down and get their things together," journalist Fitzroy Prendergast told CNN.

The storm could reach the Florida Keys by late Thursday, and those areas could be under hurricane warnings by Thursday morning, he said.

Hurricane Charley strengthens, threatens Gulf Coast



MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Hundreds of thousands of people along the Florida Gulf Coast began leaving for higher ground as forecasters warned that Hurricane Charley -- now menacing Cuba -- will likely strengthen to major hurricane status by the time it comes ashore near Tampa Bay on Friday evening.

"My principal message here today is to urge people who have not experienced a hurricane to take this very, very seriously," said Gov. Jeb Bush, who ordered a state of emergency and put National Guard troops on stand-by. "This is a serious, serious storm."

Emergency officials issued evacuation warnings from the Florida Keys up through southwest Florida into the heavily populated Tampa Bay area, which hasn't taken a direct hit from a hurricane in more than 80 years. Some roads and bridges clogged with traffic Thursday evening, as many residents in coastal and low-lying areas heeded calls to leave.

It's likely Charley becomes a Hurricane categorie 3 when it goes ashore and cause severe damage. It has at least windspeeds of 111 mph (178 km/h) Also there is a warning about the storm-surge that will be produced by the storm of 10 to 13 feet waves (ca 4m)

PUNTA GORDA, Florida (CNN) -- Federal and state officials worked Sunday to hasten the arrival of aid, electricity and security to the thousands of Floridians left homeless and hungry by Hurricane Charley.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson said 402 trucks from other states had arrived with 2 million gallons of drinking water, and 162 trucks delivered ice to the area.

Aid agencies had already provided more than 300,000 meals where potable water, electricity and phone service remained unavailable.

The Florida National Guard activated 4,000 troops for the recovery effort and an extra 750 law enforcement officers were on the roads, officials said.

Florida Power & Light estimated that 377,000 of its customers remained without electricity. About 250,000 of those were in the southwest Florida counties hardest hit by the storm.

John O. Agwunobi, the state's health secretary, encouraged first responders to remain cautious and hydrated in the 95 degree weather, and he reminded parents to give children extra water and attention.

The Category 4 storm killed 16 people as it churned diagonally across the state from the southwest coast to the northeast corner, Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings said Sunday.

It was the strongest hurricane to strike the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Andrew hit south Florida in 1992, categorized as Hurricane Categorie 4

Jennings said five people died in Polk County; four in Charlotte County; two each in Orange and Volusia counties; and one each in DeSoto, Lee and Sarasota counties.

Punta Gorda, a town in Charlotte County about 25 miles north of Fort Myers, bore the brunt of Charley's force as winds gusted to 180 mph (289 kph) in the city.

Monday was to be the first day back in class from the summer vacation for many schools in the region, but it could be two weeks before some open their doors to students, officials said.

The state was working with local school districts to assess campus safety, said John Wynn, deputy commissioner with the Florida Department of Education.

It will be one or two weeks before students can restart school in Charlotte, DeSoto and Hardee counties, Wynn said. Polk County schools will be a week late in starting, and Volusia and Orange county schools may be two days away from having classes, he said.

Aiding victims
The Federal Emergency Management Agency designated 20 counties eligible for federal disaster assistance. The move allows a quicker rush of funds and resources to the worst hit areas.

Mike Bolch with FEMA said federal officials were going house to house searching for possible victims and providing assistance.

FEMA also was conducting aerial surveillance, looking for survivors who may need quick assistance.

The Red Cross set up shelters in affected areas, including Punta Gorda. Spokesman Chris Paladeno said the Red Cross mobile food kitchen in Punta Gorda would produce 20,000 meals a day.

Bronson warned Sunday that the state would not allow anyone to bring more harm to victims with price gouging.

A state official said Sunday afternoon during a press conference that one company charged an elderly couple $11,000 for removing a tree from their house.

Bronson warned citizens to be alert, promising to prosecute anyone caught violating Florida anti-price gouging laws

"We're not playing games, we're not giving warnings," Bronson said. "If somebody's out there price gouging, they are going to be charged, and if it is a criminal offense, we will get the attorney general's office to carry those charges on to court."

Presidential visit
President Bush arrived Sunday in southwest Florida with his brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, for a flyover inspection of the devastation.

"The job of the federal government and the state government is to surge resources as quickly as possible to disaster areas, and that's exactly what's happening now," the president said.

"It is hard to describe seeing an entire community flattened," Gov. Bush said Saturday. Damage, he said, is clearly in the billions of dollars.

The state's $9 billion citrus industry was "just completely devastated" by the storm, according to a citrus growers' group.

About 280,000 of 800,000 acres (35 percent) dedicated for growing grapefruit and oranges were in the storm's path, said Florida Citrus Mutual spokeswoman Casey Pace.

One grower estimated that 70 percent of his crop was destroyed, she said.

Storms en route
After making landfall Saturday in South Carolina, Charley was downgraded to a tropical storm, and by 11 a.m. ET Sunday, it had dissipated to a tropical depression near New England. Remnants of the storm, with winds of 35 mph (56 kph), were moving northeast, the National Hurricane Center said.

Meanwhile, the fourth and fifth named storms of the Atlantic hurricane season were out at sea Sunday.

At 11 p.m. ET, Hurricane Danielle, which formed as a tropical storm Friday and developed into a Category 2 hurricane Saturday, was reported 755 miles (1,215 kilometers) west of the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa, with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. It was moving toward the northwest at near 17 mph (28 kph), the center said.

Tropical Storm Earl remained poorly organized in the eastern Caribbean Sea, with sustained winds near 45 mph (75 kph). At 11 p.m. ET, it was about 500 miles (805 kilometers) southeast of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and was reported moving west at near 22 mph (35 kph), the hurricane center said.

Vernietigende tyfoon trekt van Taiwan naar China
In China zijn 250.000 mensen geëvacueerd uit vrees voor de vernietigende tyfoon Aere.


Slagregens
De tyfoon heeft de afgelopen dagen in Zuidoost-Azië vermoedelijk zeven mensen het leven heeft gekost en een spoor van vernielingen achtergelaten. Aere raasde met hevige wind en slagregens over het noorden van Taiwan.

Boten
Ruim 30.000 vissersboten zijn van zee teruggeroepen, zo meldt het Chinese persbureau Xinhua. Begin deze maand kostte een andere tyfoon in China zeker 160 mensen het leven.

Vissers
Door het noodweer ontstonden aardverschuivingen, traden rivieren buiten hun oevers en raakte het verkeer ontregeld. De autoriteiten vrezen onder meer voor het leven van vijf vissers uit Hongkong. Hun scheepjes kapseisden voor de noordoostelijke kust van Taiwan. Wegens de harde wind en de ruwe zee werden alle reddingsoperaties gestaakt.

Tyfoon (hurricane) Aere is de "kleinere" storm die nu voor de kust van China en Taiwan ligt.

Daarachter zie je nog die 'grote bol', dat is Tyfoon Chaba, inmiddels een Categorie 3 Hurricane, die waarschijnlijk tussen Japan en Taiwan door gaat en nog veel meer schade gaat brengen.

STUART, Fla. — With homes still swaddled in blue tarp and the deaths from Hurricane Charley still fresh in their minds, Florida residents lined up before dawn Thursday for supplies or made evacuation plans as they braced for what could be the mightiest storm of the season.

Nearly a half-million people in Florida were told to leave their homes by Thursday afternoon as Hurricane Frances (search) churned toward the U.S. mainland. States of emergency were declared in both Georgia and Florida.

Ed Rappaport, deputy director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami, said Thursday that Frances is just as strong as Hurricane Charley , which devastated Florida's southwest coast Aug. 13, but twice the size.

Packing 145 mph winds and a course that has emergency officials in several Southeastern states jittery, the Category 4 storm was expected to fluctuate in intensity as it headed for a Labor Day weekend rendezvous.

Supermarkets along the state's Atlantic coast were stripped of bottled water and canned goods. In the pre-dawn hours Thursday, long lines were forming outside home supply stores in Palm Beach County, with dozens of people hoping for a chance to buy plywood or generators. A delivery truck's arrival was met with raucous applause.
