04/13/2004. Auxerre's sought-after defender Philippe Mexes has indicated that he will not join Liverpool if the Reds fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.

France international Mexes will leave Auxerre in the summer for one of Europe's elite, and his club manager Guy Roux said on Monday that Liverpool had won the race.

However, Mexes' agent, Olivier Jouanneaux, has since told BBC Sport: "Philippe will not join Liverpool if they do not qualify for the Champions League next year.

"It is a key motivation for him to play in the European Cup."

Auxerre have already signed Banik Ostrava's Czech international defender, Rene Bolf, to replace him their 22-year-old star Mexes. And Roux told Liverpool's official website: "Mexes knows Liverpool is his destination when the season finishes.

"It is true he has been followed by the great European teams, including Juventus, but nobody has made a concrete offer for Mexes except the Reds."

There is little doubt that central defence is an area that Liverpool urgently need to strengthen. Their season has been blighted by inconsistency and Igor Biscan, Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz have all been culpable at one time or another.

Reds' manager Gerard Houllier was reportedly confident of landing Mexes, but the Jouanneaux's statement throws doubt on the move. And Liverpool's 1-0 home defeat by Charlton on Saturday cannot have helped their case.

Newcastle United are now level on points with Liverpool, but with a game in hand, as the two chase that coveted fourth place and the chance to qualify for the Champions League. Nor can Charlton, Aston Villa or Birmingham be ruled out of the hunt yet, either.

Jouanneaux, who is understood to have met Roux on Friday to discuss Mexes' future, added that Houllier had contacted him last summer to talk about the defender's plans.

The agent also confirmed that he has held discussions with certain Italian clubs regarding Mexes' transfer.

Jouanneaux said: "Auxerre have told us that they will sell Philippe in the summer, but they have as yet to fix a transfer fee.

"When we met on Friday, Roux did not mention Liverpool.

"But Roux would prefer Mexes to move to an English club, because Premiership teams do not have the financial problems of Italian sides.

"But above all what Roux wants to do is to create competition between clubs to increase the transfer fee."

Ja maar niet alle Ajacieden hebben het slecht gedaan in Feijenoord dienst. Denk aan Johan Cruijff, Robbie Witschge en Henk Groot. Hij zou best van waarde kunnen zijn. Nando Rafael van Hertha BSC misschien ook.
