Misc. - Crunch Time (Sender)

Ricardo Villalobos - Thé Au Harem D'archimède (Perlon)

Niet zo goed als zijn debuut maar zeker zeer de moeite waard voor de liefhebbers van de betere friemel-, klik- en freubelhouse . Vooral "Serpentin" is een heerlijk nummer .

Melchior Productions - The Meaning (Playhouse)


Kwalitatieve, lekker in het gehoor liggende microhouse maar echt te boeien weet het helaas niet .

Matthew Dear - Backstroke



It's no doubt that Matthew Dear has been a student of the Cologne minimal house sound and production. Weaving push and pull grooves around crisp samples and effects, Dear has become more then proficient in laying down competent tracks for DJs and home listeners. He returns here with a mini LP (eight song cd, 6 song vinyl) for the Ghostly International label and continues the momentum he began last year with EP1, EP2, and the full length debut Leave Luck to Heaven (not to mention his work as Jabberjaw and some excellent singles and remix work). One would think that output would begin to suffer some quality control but Dear brings to the table another round of quality tracks in the shuffle tech vocal house style and even a few surprises that show an artist even challenging his own constructions.

After a gurgling arpegiated hypnotic intro, "Tide" begins where Dear left off from his full length with a upbeat vocal track that is easily as catchy as anything off LLTH but also feels like an artist moving on from his own past work as he sings, "I don't care about you anymore..." "Takes on Your" reminds me of work off the original Total 1 compilation from Kompakt and finds Dear shaving the house style down to the bare essentials of a kick drum until a trumpet sample briefly breaks up the repetition. "Grut Wall" is a solid after party number that again emphasizes the vocals and lyrics as a couple of rhodes piano notes pull the track to the end. The only awkward numbers would be the next two tracks but even here I feel satisfied as Dear experiments again with some odd breaks and some interesting effects on his vocals that add an uneasy drama. Following from here Dear presents a sluggish robotic funk track, but completes the album with an exceptionally strong track called "And In The Night" that feels almost proto house with a tribal rhythm as he just goes off on vocals as the track almost loses ground with the line, "I Left You High Not To Drowwwwwnnnnnn".

Overall another solid release for the Michigan based Ghostly label as Dear continues the momentum and energy of his earlier work and yet pushes forward new directions in both production arrangements and the use of his own vocals. Though many artists may become burnt out on ideas with such a schedule, Dear seems to have found a noteworthy quality in his work which is placing America back on the map again when it comes to interesting house music that may even teach a thing or two to those on the other side of the ocean.

De tweede compilatie van het sublabel van Kompakt met meer dansvloer-georiënteerd materiaal. Heerlijke diepe minimale techhouse uit Cologne. Heerlijk!

Sten - Leaving The Franctic (Dial)

Heerlijke minimale techno voor thuis. Aanrader !

Enkele van die nummers worden op ‘Leaving The Frantic’ hernomen, maar het gros is nieuw werk. Leuk voor dj’s is dat de vinylversie van het album dan weer twee bonustracks bevat. Etienne De Crecy - Super Discount 2

Het vervolg van het baanbrekende album. Super electrohouse met duidelijk nog de Franse invloeden a la Daft Punk. Niet zo baanbrekend als het eerste deel maar wel net zo lekker...

Whether EDC and compatriots Daft Punk and St Germain were directly responsible for a starring role and the mass acceptance of Air, Cassius, Stardust, Bob Sinclar et al is purely subjective; what's not is their support role in the breaking down of boundaries that would almost certainly be responsible for the later Gallic invasion.

Super Discount 2 is another cross-pollination of electro, techno and house with De Crécy the major architect. Its pluses include the storming instrumental "Fast Track" (an amazingly simple driving number in partnership with Julien Delfaud and Alex Gopher built around a relentless bassline), the neo-classical Daft Punk-like "Grokster" and the ultra funky bleeper, "Poisoned".

Elsewhere Giorgio Moroder's influences can be heard on the Midnight Express-like "Bit Torrent"; while the club fraternity will likely embrace "Overnet" (again with Gopher) and the simplistic analogue synths of "Limewire".

Once more De Crécy has manufactured an album of more than just mere fillers; and in the ultra addictive "Fast Track" the new wave of French techno has an anthem in the making.

Het duurde even maar toch uiteindelijk een antwoord.
Het album valt zwaar tegen. Op twee of drie nummers na is het wat mij betreft een waardeloos album. Tenzij je van zoetige Duitse popzang over knullige beats houdt .
