Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visual artist before he was a musician. As a young child he drew serious accolades for his animal sculptures and was offered a scholarship to study in Europe. His parents declined; and while continuing to create in the visual medium, Van Vliet turned his attention to music, within ten years forming the first incarnation of the legendary experimental outfit Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. The following 15 years are music history.

But in 1983 Van Vliet retired from music to pursue painting and drawing, the focus of this extraordinary boxed set. Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh, named after a painting the artist completed in 1987, provides an opportunity to own one of his original, signed color etchings.

Executed on paper and cataloged as Untitled (Self-Portrait), the work measures 6 5/8" x 9 1/2". The paper itself measures 7 7/8" x 10 1/2". Van Vliet produced only 1,500 copies of the piece, one for each individually numbered copy of this Artist Ink Edition from Rhino Handmade.

A deluxe 9 1/4" x 12 3/4" x 2 3/4" slipcase carefully houses the etching as well as two museum-quality books, a CD, and a DVD.

The first book, entitled Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh (88 pages), is a monograph of sorts, containing an essay by art historian Ben Watson and full-color reproductions of 60 of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings, some of them previously unpublished. The second book, entitled Splinters (96 pages), features portrait photos of the artist by Anton Corbijn, along with a selection of personal archival material supplied by Don and Jan Van Vliet-including family snapshots, newspaper clippings, drawings, and sketches. None of this material has been seen.

The CD features the artist reading 11 of his previously unreleased spoken-word pieces, which are also reprinted in the Splinters book. Spanning 1977-1999, these readings have been personally selected by Don and Jan Van Vliet. The DVD features Some YoYo Stuff, a 1994 filmed observation by Anton Corbijn.

Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 1,500 copies.

Captain Beefheart (Glendale, Californië, 15 januari 1941) is het pseudoniem van de Amerikaanse muzikant en schilder Don Van Vliet, geboren als Don Glen Vliet. Op de middelbare school raakte Vliet bevriend met Frank Zappa, die een grote invloed op hem had. Hij ontwikkelde zich tot componist, instrumentalist, zanger, tekenaar, schilder en beeldhouwer. In de jaren '60 maakte hij met zijn Magic Band de experimentele dubbel-lp Trout Mask Replica, dat door velen als een van de hoogtepunten van de (pop)muziek van de 20e eeuw wordt gezien. In totaal maakte hij elf studio-albums.
Van Vliet formeerde naar eigen zeggen in 1964 in Lancaster de Magic Band met zichzelf als componist en zanger; ook speelde hij mondharmonica en later saxofoon. Volgens anderen pleegde hij in de nieuwgevormde band een machtsgreep. Hoe dan ook, vanaf 1965 wierp hij zichzelf op als leider. De naam van de band is ontleend aan 'Captain Beefheart vs. the Grunt People', een nooit van de grond gekomen filmproject van Frank Zappa.

De Magic Band bestond uit een wisselend gezelschap muzikanten, soms werkend onder schuilnamen. Net als Zappa probeerde Beefheart blues en progressieve jazz te versmelten tot ‘folkblues voor de 21e eeuw’ (Crawdaddy). Opvallend zijn daarbij zijn zowel poëtische als surrealistische teksten die hij met een breed stemgeluid brengt. Net als Zappa stond hij ook bekend als iemand die zijn muzikanten dictatoriaal behandelde. De band stond dan ook beurtelings als The-, later als His- Magic Band bekend.

In 1969 kwam het bekendste album uit, de monumentale dubbelelpee Trout Mask Replica, geproduceerd door Frank Zappa, door Steve Huey in zijn All Music Guide een ‘challenging but groundbreaking and influential masterpiece’genoemd.

Don Van Vliet werkte enkele malen samen met Frank Zappa. Zo is hij te horen op Hot Rats (1969) en op Bongo Fury (1975).

De muziek was te modern voor die tijd en plaats. In de eerste zes jaar van zijn bestaan trad de Magic Band slechts zes keer op. Daar kwam pas in 1970 verandering in. Nadat de samenwerking met Zappa afketste, ging 'The Captain' in 1970 naar Warner/Reprise, die de Magic Band in een ‘coast-to-coast’ tournee promootte. Van toen af kreeg Captain Beefheart een kleine, maar enthousiaste schare trouwe fans. Ook in Europa brak hij door, nog vóór hij er ging optreden; zo stond hij in 1974 op Pinkpop.
