Jordan laat Heidfeld testen

Nick Heidfeld mag volgende week in Jerez voor het eerst een Jordan-wagen besturen. Het team deelde mee dat het de Duitser drie dagen laat testen. Daarmee geeft het team aan dat Heidfeld één van de belangrijkste kandidaten is om Fisichella te vervangen.

"Nick is een ideale kandidaat voor een nieuw Jordan Grand Prix en we kunnen haast niet wachten om hem het team te leren kennen. Dit is bovendien een heel belangrijke test omdat we heel wat nieuwe onderdelen moeten testen en er ook belangrijke bandentests voor Bridgestone moeten gedaan worden, aldus Eddie Jordan.

Heidfeld is niet de enige rijder die zal testen voor het team. Ook de Tsjech Jarek Janis mag voor het team testen. Jordan zet volgende week dus twee wagens in en zal dan pas eind januari opnieuw testen. De nieuwe EJ14 zou begin februari worden gepresenteerd.

So who is in the frame at Jaguar?

The news that Alexander Wurz is staying with McLaren for 2004 doesn't mean that Justin Wilson should cease checking out the 'situations vacant' columns in the back of Autosport.
The fact that the Austrian is not joining Jaguar comes as no surprise to pitpass which revealed last week that the Austrian's association with 'Superfund' was a major sticking point with one of the Milton Keynes' outfit's primary sponsors HSBC.

Wurz' decision to stay at Woking seemingly leaves the way open for Wilson, however let's not forget that Jos Verstappen is in contention for the drive while Heinz-Harald Frentzen shouldn't be written off nor should Christian Klien or Townsend Bell who both tested with the team at Valencia this week, the Austrian in particular making a big impression on the team.

However as we revealed last week, another name is in the frame, former Minardi driver and current WilliamsF1 tester Marc Gene.

Although Gene has a deal with Williams for next season, the Grove outfit is due to test Nelson Piquet Junior and Nico Rosberg this week, with a view to handing one of the hopefuls a test deal. Furthermore with former tester Antonio Pizzonia - a popular driver at Grove - available, WilliamsF1 shouldn't have too much trouble replacing Gene. According to our sources team boss Frank Williams is aware of the possibility of Gene taking the Jaguar drive and is rumoured to have given the Spaniard his full support.

It would be wrong to write off the chances of Justin and Jos, who were partners at Minardi earlier this year, but our sources suggest that Gene currently has the edge as the Ford-owned team considers its options.

Verstappen has a sizeable sponsorship budget while Paul Stoddart has made no secret of the fact that he would welcome Wilson back with open arms.

With two further tests scheduled before the end of the year it should be interesting to watch developments in the Jaguar garage, though we expect Klien to get the test role ahead of promotion in 2005.

Klien, Wilson and Jaguar

According to a report in The Guardian, Jaguar Racing appears to have already made its mind up as to who will line up alongside Mark Webber in Melbourne next March.
The British newspaper suggests that Austrian youngster Christian Klien is favourite to land the drive, helped not merely by his undoubted talent but also the fact that he carries a sizeable sponsorship budget from Red Bull. Indeed the article claims that Jaguar: "cannot afford to let him slip through their fingers at this early stage in his career".

"He did a very good job during the test," Jaguar spokesman Nav Sidhu told The Guardian, "and never put a wheel on the grass or the gravel. He was as much in control of himself as the car. He was extremely composed and calm and his technical feedback was excellent." Certainly the youngster was very impressive and there are many that feel he is indeed ready for F1.

That said, it is Jaguar of which we speak, and the Milton Keynes outfit is not known for its patience. With the GP Friday two-hour free testing sessions scrapped there would be little time for the youngster to learn many of the circuits - tracks he has never visited before.

Furthermore the new rules eliminate any driver who has participated in more than six Grand Prix in the past two years from driving the third car in the Friday practice sessions next year which would rules out any idea of Wilson or Verstappen accepting the role.

Furthermore should Klien compete in the first six or seven Grand Prix without success and the sort of progress F1 teams demand these days, Jaguar would be unable even to temporarily demote him to the role of 'third driver' under the new rules.

Therefore, and bearing in mind that Jaguar has every intention of exploiting the third car option to its limit, in addition to running a twenty-day test programme throughout the season, it is more likely that Klien will be run as the Milton Keynes' outfit's third driver.

Furthermore, the new rules allow the team to run the third car with an alternative livery.. which might be the ideal solution for Jaguar and Red Bull.

For the sort of money Red Bull is willing to invest in Jaguar at this stage, the energy drink is unlikely to get much decal space on the two race cars - especially when one of the (current) primary sponsors is the brewer Becks. However Klien's third car could feature a significant amount of Red Bull signage.

Finally let's not forget that Red Bull is continuing to sponsor Sauber, indeed the Swiss outfit's 2004 contender will be launched at Red Bull's Hangar-7 in Salzburg in Austria in January.

Therefore we predict that Klien takes the test/third driver role with Jaguar ahead of a full race seat, along with an increase in Red Bull's presence, in 2005.

As for who will line up alongside Webber in Melbourne.. time will tell.

De kans dat Justin Wilson volgend jaar nog voor Jaguar rijdt lijkt steeds kleiner te worden.In de Britse media wordt Marlboro Master winnaar Klien steeds vaker genoemd als de mogelijke nieuwe teamgenoot van Mark Webber.

Heidfeld heeft contract op zak

Het lijkt allemaal goed te gaan met Nick Heidfeld. De Duitser mag komende week testen voor het team van Jordan op Jerez, en daarmee lijkt hij z'n stoeltje voor 2004 veilig gesteld te hebben.

De Duitse krant Die WELT weet vandaag te melden dat Heidfeld het contract al op zak heeft, en dat Heidfeld volgend jaar voor het Engelse team mag uitkomen, mits Eddie Jordan z'n financiele zaakjes voor 2004 rond weet te krijgen. De teameigenaar heeft namelijk nog niet het geld binnen om in 2004 ook daadwerkelijk te kunnen rijden. Jordan heeft problemen met het vinden van sponsors waardoor er weinig geld is voor de ontwikkeling van de wagen.

Daarmee is er weer een stoeltje minder voor de overgebleven coureurs. Verstappen, Wilson, Frentzen, wat gaan zij doen? Jos aast nog steeds op het plekkie van Jaguar, maar ook daar lijkt het er steeds meer op dat Klien straks zijn plek inpikt.
Het is voor Huub Rothengatter nu een kwestie van onderhandelen, onderhandelen en nog eens onderhandelen.
