Ja, deze is al een keer eerder geweest, heel goed opgemerkt, maar dat is inmiddels al 2 jaar geleden. Veel nieuwe users zijn er in die periode bijgekomen en ook, helaas, een aantal weggegaan. Samen met de tournament-armoede van de laatste maanden, genoeg reden dus om de tournament van de verschillende decennia opnieuw te organiseren, met als kick-off The Fifties! Behoudt Vertigo zijn titel, of gaat deze keer een andere film met die eer aan de haal, jullie gaan het beslissen.
Hoe werkt zo'n tournament ook al weer 
Ik kan me voorstellen dat het een beetje weggezakt is, dus nog even snel een uitleg. Eerst worden er films verzamelt. Hoeveel dit er worden weet ik niet, dat ligt aan de input. Aangezien ik van plan ben weer het al oude paarsysteem te gebruiken, is een aantal van 64 of 128 wenselijk, een constructie met 96 is ook mogelijk. Door loting worden er dan paren gemaakt. Van deze paren moeten jullie de beste film kiezen, en dan geldt dat de film met de meeste stemmen doorgaat naar de volgende ronde. Ja, er zitten wat haken en ogen aan dit systeem, maar ik blijf het de leukste manier van het organiseren en spelen van een tournament vinden.
Jij had tog zo'n rare puntentelling
Dat klopt, deze was als volgt. Je stem telt voor evenveel punten als het aantal rondes dat je tot nu toe in dit tournament gestemd hebt. Op deze manier telt de stem van mensen die meer films uit deze tijdsperiode gezien hebben zwaarder, omdat deze waarschijnlijk ook de eerste rondes mee kunnen stemmen, terwijl anderen waarschijnlijk wat later pas in kunnen springen. Bijkomend voordeel is dat nu iedereen op de finale mag stemmen. Bij een tournament van 128 films zijn er 7 rondes. De stem in de finale van iemand die alle rondes gestemd heeft, telt dus voor 7 punten, en iemand die dan voor het eerst stemt, telt voor 1 punt.

Een goed uitgangspunt lijkt het me om de films uit de jaren '50 die in IMDb Top 250 sowieso mee te laten doen. Dit zijn de volgende films.

Bij 96 films zullen de 32 hoogst genoteerde films in de IMDb Top 250 meteen doorgaan naar de tweede ronde. Welke van de 2 aantallen het gaat worden hangt helemaal van jullie input af.

Helaas, ik wou dat ik van meer koppels beide films had gezien. .
Daarmee kwam ik ook tot de conclusie, dat ik 1957 misschien wel het beste jaar in de filmgeschiedenis vind. Wat zijn er in dat jaar veel klassiekers gemaakt, die tot op de dag van vandaag de tand des tijds met vlag en wimpel doorstaan. Veel bekende regisseurs leverde een goede film af in dat jaar, Stanley Kubrick met Paths of Glory, David Lean met Bridge on the River Kwai, Akira Kurosawa met Kumonosu jo (Throne of Blood), Federico Fellini met Notti di Cabiria en Ingmar Bergman zelfs 2 films, Det Sjunde Inseglet (The Seventh Seal) en Smultronstället (Wild Strawberries). Verder hebben we ook nog 12 Angry Men, Witness for the Prosecution en The Incredible Shrinking Man. Poeh, wat een jaar!

Die vind ik wel terecht. Ik vind Vertigo Hitchcocks beste film en Det Sjunde Inseglet zeker niet de beste van Ingmar Bergman. Smultronstället, Persona en Viskningar och Rop vind ik in elk geval (een stuk) beter dan Det Sjunde Inseglet.
Maar goed ik denk dat er nu weinig films in de runnings zijn die ik boven Vertigo verkies dus ik denk dat Vertigo het gaat halen.

De keuzes worden nu toch wel wat lastiger. De 1e combinatie is natuurlijk een hele leuke. Zelf vind ik Vertigo absoluut de beste Hitchcock, ben heel benieuwd wat de uitslag daar gaat worden. Opvallend veel Kurosawa's trouwens! Gelukkig zit m'n favoriet van de jaren '50 Rashomon daar ook nog tussen. Het zeer originele High Noon verdient trouwens ook wel een hoge eindnotering!
En natuurlijk leuk dat bij dit soort toernooien alleen de echte liefhebbers meedoen. Maakt het misschien wel wat voorspelbaar soms, maar ik ben vaak uitermate content met de uitslagen

Begrijp me goed, zoals ik eerder al aangaf vind ik Vertigo ook Hitchcocks beste. The Seventh Seal mag dan misschien (daar valt zeer zeker over te twisten) niet Bergmans beste film zijn, hij heeft op mij zeer veel indruk gemaakt. De film handelt precies over de thema's die ik persoonlijk interessant en belangrijk vind. De keuze was dus tussen een zeer goede film en een zeer indrukwekkende/aangrijpende film. Klinkt als een win-win situatie, maar toch vind ik het erg jammer dat The Seventh Seal ten onder is gegaan.

Ik vind Det Sjunde Inseglet trouwens ook de beste film van Bergman, nauw gevolgd door Persona, Fanny och Alexander en Smultronstallet. Persona is technisch gezien waarschijnlijk knapper, maar Det Sjunde Inseglet raakt me in de ziel. Ik hoop trouwens dat Rashomon de beste film wordt hier.

Bij 4 en 7 ken ik de andere films (nog) niet, maar heb ik toch gestemd, omdat een slechtere film als Sunset blvd volgens mij niet gemaakt kan worden en Bridge on the River Kwai een van de beste films ooit gemaakt is naar mijn idee.

Het ziet er "gelukkig" naar uit dat ik niet voor de onmogelijke opgave kom te staan om te kiezen tussen Rashômon en Shichinin no Samurai in de finale, dat zou egt onmogelijk voor me zijn

De frisheid die nog steeds na 50 jaar van de film afstraalt is een hele prestatie. Het is een spektakel van begin tot eind, die geen enkele minuut verveelt. Rear Window is ook een sterke film, maar Hitchcock heeft sterkere films gemaakt imo en deze film kan het dus niet winnen van Seven Samurai, waar ik overigens zojuist ook de Criterion Collection DVD uit m'n brievenbus heb gehaald, die binnenkort Out of Print schijnt te gaan.

In februari hadden we die "geplanned" ivm spreiding. Hierna eerst de sixties, daarna in januari 2003 tournament.

Maar ja, wil ik best wel doen! Februari ben ik er weer (terug uit Australie!). Wel kut dat ik de 60s dan niet kan mestemmen
Beiden zijn natuurlijk schitterende films, maar mijn stem gaat (na lang nadenken) toch naar Hitchcock's Rear Window. Niet alleen omdat het al duidelijk is dat tSS zal winnen, maar ook omdat Rear Window zo ontzettend origineel is, en de jaren vijftig, nog meer dan de jaren veertig, voor mij hét decennium zijn van Hitchcock (met o.a. Strangers on a Train, Vertigo, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Dial M...). Ook blijf ik de film bewonderen door het mini-wereldje dat Hitch creëerde in de film, alle kleine verhaaltjes die door de film heen lopen, en natuurlijk vooral de meesterzet om (vrijwel) alles uit die éne kamer te filmen.
Hmm... Ik zie nu net dat de jaren vijftig eigenlijk ook het decennium van Kurosawa zijn, met Schinchin, Rashomon en The Hidden Fortress, argh. Maar ik blijf bij mijn keuze.
