A probable starter in the Cup

Luis Enrique was all set to start against Levante in the Cup, but a chance clash with fullback Oscar López has left him with a fractured cheekbone. He joins five other Barca players on the injury list.

Luis Enrique will definitely miss the games against Levante and Zaragoza, though the exact extent of the injury and the necessary recovery time will not be known until the player has been seen by a specialist on Wednesday.

Second injury of the season

Luis Enrique had already picked up an ankle injury in a practice game on 15th December when a fierce shot from Xavi hit him on the right foot. This injury kept him out for 10 days. This second injury comes at a bad time for the squad's most veteran member, just when he was looking to consolidate his place in the team.

A changed Barca side, with Valdés in goal and Luis García sitting behind front man Saviola, lost by the slimmest of margins against Levante tonight. Barca can rightly point to a combination of bad luck, the occasional lack of sharpness in front of goal and a terrible performance from the referee as their worst enemies. After a first half marred by an extremely harsh penalty decision, Barca switched to a much more direct style led by the ever present Iniesta, but luck and goals, turned their backs.

A TV Penalty

The home side pressed hard in the opening minutes and had the lion's share of possession but Barca soaked up the pressure without problems. However, the referee Rodríguez Santiago changed the course of the game by awarding a penalty against Puyol for tugging at Levante striker Aganzo. A penalty yes, but a penalty that is hardly ever given.

Occasional chances

With a goal in their favour, the home side started to believe in their possibilities and tried on three occasions to score the second, but without much accuracy. Barca's efforts were limited to a free kick by Ronaldinho that Aizpurúa blocked without difficulty.

The second effort came in the 22nd minute. Luis García fired from the edge of the box but his shot drifted well wide. Four minutes later, Xavi took a free kick which Levante keeper Aizpurúa took easily.

The presence of Iniesta in midfield gave the team greater freshness, as was obvious in the opening quarter of an hour. In the 43rd minute, the young midfielder directed a fast break that ended with a shot from Luis García. Without doubt the best Barca move of the first half.

Barca improve

Barca continued to create danger in the second half with two shots from Rafa Márquez in the 48th and 50th minutes. The Mexican had pushed up into midfield towards the end of the first half. Barca was taking a grip on the game and just three minutes later Xavi fired with his left foot but Aizpurúa managed a difficult save.

In the 57th minute, Andrés Iniesta confirmed the improvement in Barca's play as he forced his way between two defenders and fired from the right across the goalmouth. Aizpurúa had to stretch hard to push the ball around for a corner. Once again the referee influenced the course of the game by keeping the red card in his pocket after a dreadful tackle by Aganzo on Puyol.

Barca dominate

Valdés pulled off a great save in the 62nd minute from former Barca forward Ángel Cuellar, who shot low and hard, only to be substituted three minutes later.

Rafael Márquez had the best chance of the match so far when he headed against the crossbar from a cross from the left from Andrés Iniesta. Barca were playing much better than in the first half, but were helpless against the combination of bad luck, sloppy finishing and a terrible referee, who once again failed to use his red card, this time for a kick by Sandro on Iniesta.

Ettien had a fantastic chance to score the second for the home side but then Saviola, in the 79th minute was foiled by some steady goalkeeping by Aizpurúa. Three minutes later, a great pass from Xavi to Sergio García could have led to the equalizer, but the Levante keeper was once again unbeatable. In the closing minutes, Aganzo and Ettien came close for Levante, but Valdés stood firm.

Barça dat domineert maar toch verliest

of een goede helft speelt, maar uiteindelijk terugzakt tot een slecht spelend hoopje

nu mogen ze wel een mooi resultaat gaan neerzetten thuis
en tegen zaragoza kunnnen ze ook maar best winnen, want anders is dit een enorm slecht start van dit jaar, het is al begonnen in mineur
en maar hopen dat het niet zo blijft

Nu moet Davids wel nog akkoord gaan, en zijn salaris zal ook fors verminderen.
Van 3,6 mil. naar 1,2 milj.
Maarjah, het is dat of geen ek voor meneertje

en er werd al op voorhand gezegd dat er geen wonderen mogen verwacht worden van Rijkard

de team moet werd toch wel gedeeltelijk opnieuw opgebouwd, en na jaren wanbeleid moet Barça geleidelijk aan weer stijgen naar zijn oude niveau

Davids definitief naar Barcelona

Studio Sport meldt dat Davids de rest van het seizoen voor Barcelona zal spelen.

Eerder werd al gemeld dat Barcelona en Juventus tot een akkoord waren gekomen, maar er werd getwijfeld of Davids bereid was salaris in te leveren. Barcelona en Edgar Davids zijn vandaag ook tot een akkoord gekomen voor de rest van het seizoen.
Davids kwam in Juventus nog weinig aan spelen toe, nadat hij weigerde zijn contract bij Juventus te verlengen. In Italië gingen de geruchten dat hij al een voorcontract voor de komende seizoenen bij een Italiaanse club heeft getekend. Bij Barcelona wordt hij de zesde Nederlandse speler naast Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars, Michael Reiziger, Giovanni van Bronckhorst en Phillip Cocu.
