Probot is upon us and its far more than anyone could have ever expected; an all-star performance record of monumental proportions. The songs on the Probot album were written entirely by Grohl. He then sent out these recordings to all of his favorite metal vocalists from a specific period of time in underground metal (83 to '90,) Each song features its own throat and Grohl also had help from a few other dudes (Kim Thayill of Soundgarden lays a blistering solo down on the King Diamond track, Bubba Dupree from Void is on the Mike Dean track. etc...) Grohl enthustiacally explains: There are some fast tracks, the Cronos track (Centuries of Sin) is old school fast thrash metal. The Lee Dorrian track (Ice Cold Man) is slow and has a dirge to it. The Snake track (Dictatorsaurus) is kind of reminiscent of a old Voivod track. The King Diamond track (Sweet Dreams) is slow. The Mike Dean track (Access Babylon) is sort of like an old school metal hardcore-crossover song. It moves in a lot of different ways. It isnt about me; Im just having the time of my life in fantasy camp being able to create something with these people I listened to for years when I was young. Probot is a ecletic metal compilation. Each track is its own unique entity, always potent, always compelling. and completely metal!
The first grimm taste of Probot will be a two-track 7 , limited to 6,666 copies, unleashed this November on Southern Lord recordings.
This cult item will feature two Probot songs:
Centuries Of Sin with Cronos of Venom,
the Emerald Law featuring Wino of The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Place of Skulls,
The full album, totaling eleven hard-hitting tracks (plus a secret bonus track yet to be revealed), is to be released on February 10th, 2004 on Southern Lord Recordings and will be available on both CD and 2xLP format. A video for the track Shake Your Blood will be filmed in November.

de medewerking van zangers als King Diamond, Tom Warrior en Lee Dorrian aanschaffen.

That rant aside, Probot is still the work of an aficionado and it wears its metal stripes well. "Centuries Of Sin" (with Cronos) and "Red War" (with Cavalera) are excellent thrashers, while Snake's "Dictatosaurus" and King Diamond's "Sweet Dreams" (featuring Kim Thayil on guitar) could have been on Dimension Hatross and Abigail. 'Access Babylon' and 'Silent Spring', the Mike Dean and Kurt Brecht songs, are probably the most impressive though, as Grohl's foray into "crossover" works exceedingly well, probably because he was immersed in the hardcore/punk/indie scenes for much of Nirvana's turmoil. Elsewhere, "The Emerald Law" (featuring Wino) is a fuzzed-out stoner jaunt as expected, and Tom G. Warrior's "Big Sky" comes off as the type of industrial metal that might have materialised had Trent Reznor never decided to put his suffering to paper. The record's aesthetic is equally as genuine, as the cover and Probot logo are designed by Voivod's Away, much in the Phobos or Negatron vein. We all know Dave Grohl isn't all of a sudden going to be metal's spokesperson to the incurable Paris Hilton masses at the VH1 Awards, but he has contributed solidly to our sphere, bringing together the genre's best and most respected. For that, and for the subsequent killer tunes, Grohl has earned respect.

tis niet echt slecht maar er naar luisteren zal ik waarschijnlijk niet..
Ik heb de cd al enkele weken in huis (zeg maar sinds kort na de release) en ik vind het een erg lekkere cd. Vooral Red War en Ice cold man vind ik erg prettige nummers, en slechte nummers staan er wat mij betreft niet op. Een leuk project waarvan ik het alleen jammer vind dat de nadruk veel op de zangers ligt, waardoor het in mijn ogen geen geheel is, maar een meer een verzamel-cd. Van mij had het wat meer Probot mogen zijn, want minder de zangers.
Overigens ook nog niet gemeld in dit optic, volgens mij, Access Babylon, nummer 4 met Mike Dean, is een Alec Empire cover. Een cover van Tear it out. Dus als ze bij MTV weer eens zeggen dat Dave Grohl alle muziek geschreven heeft.. dat is onzin.

Shortly after' Grohl offered the riffs to techno noise animal Alec Empire for samples. niet echt een cover dus, maar Empire had eerst er zangpartijen op gedaan, blijkbaar.
Je bracht me toch weer aan het twijfelen, en dus ben ik eens gaan googlen. Ik vond niet veel, maar wel een stuk waarin geschreven wordt dat Grohl de riff bedacht heeft, en toen is gaan samenwerken met Alec Empire. Alec Empire is er vervolgens mee aan de slag gegaan.
