Dave Grohl's a funny guy it seems, both in his personal disposition and in his musical vision. After his stint with the cred-obsessed Nirvana, he moved on to pop consortium Foo Fighters without even the blink of a eye -- all that cred, all for nothing. Now that Grohl's satisfied in the mainstream, at the award galas, and filling arenas, that itch for cred has seemingly come back, culminating in the oft-delayed, long-rumoured Probot project and its release on Southern Lord Records (!). We've all been kind of duped when it comes to Probot though, 'cos the advance hype said that the band was Grohl's foray into the extreme metal world. And while the man has indeed put together true metal songs, the tunes aren't Dave Grohl writing original metal: instead, they're Dave Grohl covering metal he once loved, and there's a very important difference between the two. Instead of Cronos, Max Cavalera, Lemmy, Mike Dean, Lee Dorian, Wino, Snake, King Diamond and others singing over Dave's metal material, you've basically got those guys singing over tracks that could have indeed been their own -- there's a real cover-band feel to this whole record. That rant aside, Probot is still the work of an aficionado and it wears its metal stripes well. "Centuries Of Sin" (with Cronos) and "Red War" (with Cavalera) are excellent thrashers, while Snake's "Dictatosaurus" and King Diamond's "Sweet Dreams" (featuring Kim Thayil on guitar) could have been on Dimension Hatross and Abigail. 'Access Babylon' and 'Silent Spring', the Mike Dean and Kurt Brecht songs, are probably the most impressive though, as Grohl's foray into "crossover" works exceedingly well, probably because he was immersed in the hardcore/punk/indie scenes for much of Nirvana's turmoil. Elsewhere, "The Emerald Law" (featuring Wino) is a fuzzed-out stoner jaunt as expected, and Tom G. Warrior's "Big Sky" comes off as the type of industrial metal that might have materialised had Trent Reznor never decided to put his suffering to paper. The record's aesthetic is equally as genuine, as the cover and Probot logo are designed by Voivod's Away, much in the Phobos or Negatron vein. We all know Dave Grohl isn't all of a sudden going to be metal's spokesperson to the incurable Paris Hilton masses at the VH1 Awards, but he has contributed solidly to our sphere, bringing together the genre's best and most respected. For that, and for the subsequent killer tunes, Grohl has earned respect.
