Mes chagrins, mes plaisirs
Je n'ai plus besoin d'eux
BalayÚs mes amours

Dandy warhols hebben een nummer dat zo heet, voor wie het nog niet snapt... ze speelden het ook nadat de zanger dit gezegd had.

*** was essentially singer/songwriter ###, an alumnus of the mid-1980s indie band the Dancing Hoods. A tenure in the Johnson Family (later known as Salt Chuck Mary) followed, as did stints sweeping chimneys and painting houses; he began working as *** in 1995, honing his spooky, lo-fi roots-pop in the studio located on his Bremo Bluff, VA farm. After a demo made its way to the offices of Capitol Records, ### signed to the label to issue ***'s acclaimed debut &&&, scoring an alternative radio hit with the single "Someday I Will Treat You Good." In early 1996, after a *** live date in London, ### nearly died when he passed out after mixing Valium with prescription antidepressants; throughout the 14 hours he spent unconscious on his hotel's bathroom floor his legs were pinned under the rest of his body, and the prolonged loss of blood circulation nearly left him crippled. Many months and countless surgeries later he was back on his feet, although no new *** material was forthcoming prior to the release of &&& in mid-1998.

required many plays before revealing the intricacies of its densely layered mix; here, multiple plays are necessary to discern the music's form, to get a handle on quiet, drifting, minimally arranged songs with no hooks. Of course, the natural reaction of any serious record geek is that if the music demands so much work, it must be worth it and at times, that supposition is true. But
's challenge doesn't always live up to its end of the bargain. It's self-consciously alienating and difficult, and while that can be intriguing, it seems deeper than it actually is. Repeated plays dissipate the mystique and reveal a number of rather drab songs (primarily during the second half), where there isn't enough under the surface to make
's relentless experimentation satisfying. But mixed results are still results, and about half of the songs positively shimmer with genius.

geen idee trouwens maar die zin... briljant
Listened some more to and I just can't get into it. Whilst I admire the determined and certainly understandable effort to throw off their "Saviour of Rock Music" mantle I can't help but miss what makes them great. I just don't have the desire to go back and listen to it ever again. They don't sound like they're doing what comes naturally. It sounds too forced. And bands like Grassy Knoll ,Godspeed you Black Emperor, Eno,John Cale etc etc. have all managed to make music in a similar vein except they make it compelling and communal and fun and beautiful without it EVER sounding fake and aloof and it seems unfair that they haven't exactly been declared as GENIUS gods of original thought despite the fact that they too are making music confounding the typical expectations, confines and structures of popular music. HOLY
. Who DARES to speak out against them?
