The subject matter is simply too wide in scope and each perspective has a different mood, to an extent where it seems like three different movies instead of threads of a novel to be woven together. I would guess that was aiming for a grand recreation of a specific time and place in history ala Spike Lee's Summer of Sam.
The Cuban Missile Crisis material is too cursory to be of much use. There are hints that could have achieved a truly frightening depiction of the paranoia and panic that swept over some communities, although he shoots for a more humorous angle in , and that may have worked in another context, as well. As it sits in this film, however, it doesn't cohere or provide much of a subtext. Although it allows a couple plot points, that's all it does and it should have been cut.
The material about the high school kids is passable, but not overly entertaining. It plays somewhere between an idealized Spielbergian depiction of youth and fodder for a middling Nickelodeon `cute' drama. As it comprises the bulk of the film, that description would suffice for , as well.
Where and team succeed, however, is in the material about and the brilliant examples of his work. should have been as my preconception had it. obviously has a love for films like as well as fare such as The Blob, The Fly, etc., and relishes in their goofiness as much as their status as effective shockers"
