Not only that, but there is also an option for a second movie as well.
With the model established by Family Guy's return – where a direct-to-video movie eventually spawned the show's return to Fox primetime as well – could the much-missed Futurama also be on the way back to a set near you?

Variety reports that talks have begun at 20th Century Fox TV to revive the animated series Futurama, which takes place in the next millennium.
The studio is in early discussions to put Futurama back in production and create a limited number of episodes of the Emmy Award-winning series -- although it's too soon to tell where those episodes might end up, adds the trade.
The final original episode of Futurama aired on Fox in August 2003. But since then, the series has found new life -- and fans -- via DVD releases and repeatedly high-rated airings on the Cartoon Network.
Futurama remains popular enough that Comedy Central even stole away off-net rights to the show's repeats late last year; it will switch to the comedy channel in 2008.
A similar resurgence in interest for Family Guy persuaded 20th Century Fox TV to revive that show, which has produced two seasons of new episodes and a DVD since coming back from the dead. Family Guy now resides as Fox's Sunday 9 p.m. tentpole.
The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and "Simpsons" vet David X. Cohen were behind Futurama, which premiered on Fox in March 1999.
(er was steeds sprake over drie)quote:Good news everyone!
I just got an e-mail from David X.Cohen saying that things look very good
for the Futurama DVD's! He said we'll probably be starting up after new
years.I'm very psyched to get back together with all my friends again.I guess
this is a belated xmas present!
All happy now,
B.

Our friend Billy West has once again spilled the beans. According to a post he made on his message board, Futurama is going to be renewed for television with 26 episodes. No word as to what station it will be on, who will rejoin the cast, or whether it'll be two seasons that would consist of 13 episodes each or one HUGE season of 26 episodes. Please keep in mind though, all this information is still very unofficial. Nothing is down on paper. No contracts signed. Nada. NOTHING. But, it's still pretty awesome.
I'm this close to selling my show--''Billy Bastard--Amateur Human Being,'' And the other good news is that they're doing 26 new episodes of ''Futurama'' for TV and we're hammering out the deal now. The original plan was to have the DVD's first but that's no longer the case.I'm totaly jammed dude.
Greetings from the year 3000! It still sucks!
Billy
I want you to know that I heard from conflicting sources about the Futurama
news.I was set straight for now that it is NOT new TV episodes but the
original plan of making a few feature-length DVD's.Don't give up yet.I had
unsubstantiated info but there is a DVD project on the way.
Billy
I'm getting different bits of info that say this news may not be the case. There IS something up Futurama project wise but but it might be the DVD's still. It's hard to keep up with things--but I'll try to do better.
Sorry,
Billy
So there you have it folks, the return of Futurama as a series may not be the case as of right now. In related news that backs up the idea of Futurama coming to DVD rather than TV, Bill Morrisson recently spoke to a fan about how the Futurama Movie script is almost finished at a convention in Germany. Woot.
Update 2: (mArc)
Another well-informed source tells us that there was no basis in reality for the 26 episode rumour. The plan to make direct-to-DVD movies is still existing.
http://www.avclub.com/content/node/47771quote:AVC: What can you say about the Futurama movies?
MG: We're going to do four of them, straight to DVD. And as we speak, I'm exchanging e-mails and ideas with David X. Cohen and Ken Keeler, both of whom worked on the show from the very beginning. Right now we're trying to figure out whether to do a giant epic, or separate crazy movies, or what. But I wager that Bender will be featured prominently.
AVC: Why do you think that Fox treated Futurama the way it did?
MG: I think there were just a few executives around at the time who did not understand the show. No amount of explaining the humor of a crab monster and a crazy robot and a one-eyed sci-fi babe could change their minds.
AVC: Didn't they trust you based on your track record? You basically made Fox with The Simpsons. Didn't that buy you some currency?
MG: Well, it got us on the air and kept us on the air for four years, but they didn't get the show, and that's that. There's a long, regal history of misunderstood TV shows, and to Fox's credit, the studio looked at the ratings on the Cartoon Network and how the show does overseas, and saw that there was more money to be made. So now we get to come back and tell some of the stories that we've had lined up that we never got around to. When David Cohen and I put together the show, we spent a couple years building the universe, and we have characters and stories that we haven't even got around to that we already have voluminous notes on.
AVC: Do you feel vindicated over Futurama becoming such a hit on Adult Swim and DVD?
MG: I suppose. One of the great things about this whole process is the fans have always been unbelievably supportive and encouraging, so it's fun to be able to give them what they want, which is more Futurama.
AVC: Is there any chance that it might return to television?
MG: Certainly. That's always a possibility. Look at the example of Family Guy, which came back from the dead and is walking among us.
AVC: On Futurama, Robot Devil has appeared a number of times. Is there a Robot God to go along with him?
MG: That's one of the things we're probably going to explore in one of the Futurama movies. In one of our best episodes, we had a conversation between Bender and what apparently was God, and I think we're going to explore what was really going on in that conversation.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/S(...)lots.reut/index.htmlquote:There also was speculation that Fox was looking to resurrect the animated series "Futurama," from "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, on its Sunday lineup the same way that "Family Guy" was brought back last year. The network has an option for new episodes, which currently are being produced for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim late-night block.

quote:t’s the good news everyone has been waiting for! A new season of "Futurama"—the brilliant, animated sci-fi comedy from "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and executive producer David X. Cohen—is finally being produced for a 2008 release.
bronquote:It’s still not determined whether the new episodes will debut on Comedy Central or DVD, but we’re too excited to care! We pinned down Cohen to get the skinny on what we can expect when "Futurama" reawakens from its cryo-sleep.
ToyFare: So where are you right now in the production of the new season?
DAVID X. COHEN: We’re about halfway through the writing, but just getting started on the animation. One big decision we have not yet made is how, once again, to “end” the series—hopefully not for the last time.
How long after the last “series finale” does the new season take place? And what can we expect for the Fry and Leela relationship?
COHEN: When our story resumes, two long years have passed. As for the Fry/Leela relationship, we will be visiting that subject right away, so I refuse to tell you where it will lead on the grounds that I want you to buy the DVD.
How much continuity will the new season feature?
COHEN: Within the new season, we will definitely feature more continuity than in the past. We will also be shedding light on several lingering questions from the original run, including hitherto unknown facts about Nibbler, dark matter and Seymour the dog. By the way, that was my first use of the word “hitherto” in an interview. I think it went well.
[Laughs] Nice. How much of the original cast and crew were you able to put together?
COHEN: We have the entire cast back, as well as a good chunk of the writing staff. We also have Rough Draft Studios animating once again, and they seem determined to top even their own amazing work from the first time around. To complete the reunion of our original crack team, it looks like we will also have Chris Tyng back to work his magic on the musical score.
Are there any guest voices lined up yet?
COHEN: We will have a number, yes, but I can only officially report on the one we have already recorded—up-and-coming voice-over star Al Gore. For the first time, we are going to show what really determined the outcome of the 2000 Presidential election.
Toynami’s going to be making new Futurama toys—are you into the toys at all?
COHEN: I think I have every Futurama toy legally produced so far. I loved their I-Men [block figures]... It’s especially fun for me to see toys based on side characters like Calculon and Roberto. Personally, although I think I speak for millions, I would like to see toys of Hypnotoad, Slurms McKenzie and Hedonismbot. Also, I’d like Fry, Leela and Bender in their superhero forms: Captain Yesterday, Clobberella and SuperKing.
Are there any new characters being introduced in the new season that you’re excited about?
COHEN: Yes, particularly Nudar, the evil alien nudist. We’re not sure what the censorship issues are as far as showing unrecognizable alien reproductive organs. I guess we’ll just put it on the air and see what happens.
Well, until Nudar debuts, who’s your favorite minor character on the show?
COHEN: Hypnotoad. By the way, we are looking into producing a full 22-minute episode of Everybody Loves Hypnotoad for the DVD release. I am serious.
Eensch!quote:Op donderdag 14 december 2006 08:53 schreef Sharkdoggie het volgende:

Around one of many corners of the crowded bistro was the man himself, Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons. (Dan Castellaneta, the voice of Homer, was also at the party.) Groening was happy to talk about his other baby, Futurama, coming back with four new DVD features. They'll also be cut down into 16 new episodes airing in the U.S. on Comedy Central. Hopefully someone in Canada will snap them up.
"All the cast was excited about coming back - Katey Sagal, Billy West, all of them,'' said Groening, who never hides his displeasure at Fox's premature cancellation of the edgy sci-fi 'toon.
Told Groening my kids, 16 and 14, have never known life without The Simpsons, now in its 18th season and closing in on 400 episodes. He laughed when I told him my son Daniel, at around age seven, ran into the room once yelling, "Dad, there's a guy on TV who sounds just like Mayor Quimby!''
Turns out it was a clip of John F. Kennedy giving his inauguration address.
"Let me offer you an apology,'' joked Groening.
