Hoops chief executive Peter Lawwell told BBC Scotland there was interest, though manager Tony Mowbray had earlier denied any interest in the player.

K-League leaders FC Seoul earlier claimed Celtic were chasing the highly-rated 20-year-old. Lawwell met with Ki's representatives in London on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's Champions League meeting with Arsenal but stressed any deal would not take place during the current transfer window.

Seoul's general manager Kang Myong-won told Sports Seoul earlier: "Celtic have informed us of their intentions about Ki Sung-Yeung. "We understand that the player may want to move but this is not a good time for us to sell."

Seoul are currently six points clear at the top of the K-League and will face Qatar's Umm Salal in the Asian Champions League quarter-finals next month. Mowbray has used the South Korean market before, bringing Kim Do-heon to West Brom while in charge at the Hawthorns.

Ki began his career at John Paul College in Brisbane, Australia, and returned to South Korea to sign for Seoul in 2006. He was linked with Manchester United following the 2007 Under-20 World Cup and made his full international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Jordan in June last year.

Zheng Zhi agrees Celtic deal

China international Zheng Zhi will join Celtic on a two-year contact subject to securing a work permit. Bhoys boss Tony Mowbray moved to sign the free agent former Charlton Athletic midfielder on transfer deadline day.

Mowbray had tried to sign the 29-year-old midfielder for former club West Bromwich Albion last season.

"Celtic are a great club with a great manager," Zhi told the Daily Record.

"I'm so excited to be here and looking forward to playing with Celtic.

"I'm very happy. I know Tony from his time at West Brom and I really liked him then. He tried to sign me a year ago, so it's good for me I was able to do that now.

"I admire him a lot. He is a big reason I've signed for Celtic. I want to play under a manager like him."
