As the eighties are revisited this movie is a drama of one of a kind. What seems to be humor is drama, fast and short sentenced. A delayed experience from the seventies worked out over the beginning of the eighties, a time where economic situation wasn't that good. Fast dialogue, sex as it might actually happen, unromanced, pretty bad. The last shot made it all clear, a moment where all characters go there way, then the camera pans to a view where you actually see the little village laying in front of the skyline!
It's got very little action. Besides one of the most brutal rape scenes you're likely to see on screen, it's not something that would draw most people into watching the movie. The film is not quick by any means, and at 115 minutes is a bit over drawn.
So why watch this movie? Because deep, deep down in the story is buried a very simple theme that can escape a person when they are in the middle of the anguish of their own life: even after you've been beaten, bloodied, and bruised by life you can find happiness instead of despair--or not, as is the case with at least one of the characters.

What appealed to me was for every character in the film, I could associate it to someone I grew up with. I did grow up in a small town and I was in a group of "Spetters". At that time, one of the girls known in my group had become a famous model we all wanted to be like her and have what she got. (Little did I know that four years later in 1986, she would die a horrible, lonely death and not one person would remember her like we did.) We were young, and all we could see was the fame and money. We didn't see further and lets be honest, we all wanted to leave that small town and be a big fish. When she died it was sad, but life went on. I was the one that everyone made fun of, and another girl was smart but couldn't live up to her parents expectations & didn't quite come to grips with herself as to who she was, just like this film. It opened my eyes to life quickly and I grew up while watching this sobering film.
