Van de alom bekende regisseur Kevin Smith komt dit jaar Jersey Girl. De 2e film waarin Ben & Jen samen spelen. Ik verwacht hier meer van dan die andere film die dit jaar van ze uitkomt.
Plot summary:
Jersey Girl is a '90s-era dramatic comedy about a man named Ollie Trinke and the effects a new wife and 6-year-old daughter, Gertie, have on his seemingly already full life. Gertie is precocious and entirely lovable. Like her mother, she is down to earth, clever, and a huge fan of the musical Sweeney Todd. While Gertie is able to manipulate Ollie with the finesse of an adult, she is ultimately Daddy's little girl.

Jason Mewes pulled a Silent Bob in court yesterday.
The actor, best known as Kevin Smith's stoner sidekick Jay in Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, remained tight-lipped Tuesday as a New Jersey judge gave him a stark choice: Get sober in drug rehab or face time in the slammer.
Mewes' made a big no-no in 2001 by failing to show up for court appearances stemming from a 1999 heroin conviction. Freehold, New Jersey, Superior Court Judge Michael D. Farren subsequently issued an arrest warrant.
The 28-year-old actor finally gave himself up to authorities in the town of Freehold on Tuesday and made his court appearance--with a twist. He had a documentary film crew along with him, chronicling his cold-turkey attempt to give up heroin for an HBO special, according to the Asbury Park Press. The name of the doc: Rock Bottom.
Standing before Judge Farren--with cameras rolling--the usually hyper actor played against type, not speaking except to cop to a number of probation violations. Those included failing to meet with his probation officer, not undergoing court-mandated drug tests and counseling, lying to the court and crossing state lines without permission.
Farren then gave the New Jersey native 10 days to check into the Discovery House, a drug rehabilitation facility based in nearby Marlboro. The judge forbade Mewes from leaving the state until he completes the four- to six-month program. Upon completion of rehab, Mewes will be allowed to have his probation transferred to Los Angeles, where he currently lives. He also had his probation extended to February 2005.
If he slips up, Mewes faces a fate worse than Mallrats reruns--up to five years in jail.
Mewes continued the silent treatment outside the courthouse, refusing to answer reporters' questions.
But his manager and Rock Bottom producer Craig Veytia told the Asbury Park Press that Mewes "wants to help other people so they don't fall into the same trap as he did."
Veytia says the doc will show footage of Mewes using heroin and then experiencing withdrawal, along with clips from his court dates and possibly his rehab sessions.
According to the 1999 police report, Jersey's finest pulled Mewes' '93 Plymouth over after observing his car air bag deployed and Mewes attempting to hide a "metal package" in his girlfriend's purse. The cops found a hypodermic needle in the container and a stash of heroin in Mewes' sock.
Mewes' attorney, Peter O'Mara, cut a deal with prosecutors, with the actor pleading guilty to a reduced charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to two years' probation, drug counseling, drug testing, 200 hours of community service, a $1,000 fine and suspension of his driver's license. Mewes was also allowed to serve out his sentence in L.A. so he could continue acting, provided he show up for his New Jersey court dates.
Aside from his roles opposite Smith and the HBO documentary, Mewes' other major credit is a cameo in the 2001 music video for Afroman's "Because I Got High."
As for the film -- well, I'll say this: I fucking love it. I do. I really adore it -- moreso than anything we've ever done before. Outside of marrying Schwalbach and being too lazy to rip open a prophylactic that apparently had Harley's name written all over it (though not necessarily in that order), it's the best thing I've ever done. That's not to say it's for everybody; in fact, a good number of the folks who've loved our previous flicks will probably abandon us after seeing JERSEY GIRL is nothing like them (not even AMY), if they even see it at all. Anybody who incorporates "Snootchie Bootchies!" into their Internet postings or daily conversations might wanna wait for the CLERKS cartoon flick (which -- take this as promise or a threat -- is next for us) and skip this one. I'll save you the time of having to post this on our Web-board and let you know that I understand you feel I'm a "pussy," a "sell-out," "I've lost it" (whatever "it" was), and I "eat cok." You're not going to change my mind about the flick; I just love it too much.

Arme Jen, ze had revange kunnen nemen met haar volgende film Jersy Girl, waarin zij opnieuw samenspeelt met Bennieboy. Maar door de flop Gigli is door de producenten van de film besloten om de meeste scenes van Jen uit Jersey Girl te knippen. Er zal niet meer overblijven dan een soort figurantenrolletje. En dat terwijl Jenniger een slordige 4 miljoen dollar voor de rol heeft gescoord. Jen is hiermee de duurste figurant allertijden geworden, en dat is natuurlijk al een hele prestatie op zich.

PLOT:
A man in love with his pregnant wife falls into a tailspin when his daughter is born but his doting better-half, passes away during the birth. Self-involved and ineffectual as a single parent, the man asks his dad to take care of the kid, until he loses his way even further and must raise the child on his own. Seven years later, the daughter is all growns up and looks like a mini-version of J-Lo. Cutie-pie.
CRITIQUE:
This is definitely a different kind of Kevin Smith movie. From the man who brought us corpse-sex and cocksmokers back in 1994's $27,000 movie CLERKS, comes a sweet story about a man, his daughter and the unconditional love between them. This is not a film for the legion of Smith's habitual fans (well, maybe those with girlfriends and wives...), but it does serve its purposes for the more commercially receptive audiences to which this film is clearly being marketed. I liked this movie for a number of reasons, prime among them being the believable and touching relationship between the father and daughter, as well as both of the actors portraying the characters, Ben Affleck and Raquel Castro, respectively. Castro, in particular, is about as adorable as any kid actor that I've seen in a long time and Smith takes full advantage of her cuteness. It doesn't hurt that she eerily resembles her mother in the film, played nicely by Jennifer Lopez, in a few early scenes. I've had a "hard" and an "on" for Lopez since her sultry turn in OUT OF SIGHT, but that's a whoooole other story, my friends. The relationship between Affleck and Castro is essentially what rolls this movie along, rocking between a couple of emotional scenarios that actually twinkled my own shit and some goofier kid/parent moments. My favorite scene in the entire film features Affleck facing his kid in a crib for one of the first times and confessing a whole bunch of his pent up emotions. The man is extremely effective in the scene. I've been a supporter of Affleck since he choked me up in ARMAGEDDON (and wasn't he the fuckin' bomb in PHANTOMS?), but even more seriously, in both BOUNCE and CHANGING LANES, two roles for which I don't believe he's been given enough credit.
That said, he needed to carry this film's emotional core on his sleeve and did so with great success. I also appreciated the semi-relationship developed between he and Liv Tyler, which didn't take the typical route. Despite most of the film being somewhat predictable, the relationship between those two characters was actually a lot more open-ended (me likey open-ended) On the downside, I'm not a fan of "montages" and this film just had too many of them, as well as an over-emphasis on songs to "make the moment". A couple of goofball characters, friends of Affleck's father in the film, were also obviously inserted for comic relief, but did nothing for me. The film's final 20 minutes were also surprisingly generic and even a little cheesy (then again, I hate plays with a passion!) Smith does succeed in making his film look damn polished though and that's a big credit to him (and cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond), since his directing prowess has always been one of his least mentioned strengths as a filmmaker. The script also maintains a decent balance between drama and comedy, although it's definitely geared more toward the dramatic, and the laughs are generally of the "chuckle kind", as opposed to the ass-tearing hilarious dialogue he banged out in his previous, more low-brow, fare (gotta love that low-brow fare!) In fact, despite a few "Smith-isms", most of the film's dialogue is pretty straightforward/sweet and strays from his habit of having conversations sound too "written" at times. Kudos. The film's not perfect by any means, not helped by the fact that I'm personally not a fan of the sappy stuff, but if you're a father, if you're a daughter or if you're someone like me who wants to be a father with a daughter (aaaaaaaaaaaah!), the film is sure to toggle with many of your own emotional shortcomings, offer easy-going laughs and some damn solid acting and chemistry between pop and daughter. Nifty cameos and a genuine dedication at the end of the film were also nice touches.
On a personal note, it's great to see a filmmaker you admire put his balls on the chopping block and try something so completely different. This film can only help but make Kevin Smith a more rounded movie-man and that's sure to come in handy with his next big project, a little something called THE GREEN HORNET!

The wife thought it was disgusting, gross, stupid, and entirely without a single funny moment. And she liked it much better than I did. I've never walked out of a movie before, but I came darn close to heading out of Jersey Girl after about half an hour. It wasn't funny. It wasn't touching. It was terrible. Easily, the worst movie I've ever seen at the theater.
It was my idea to go see it. Now I have to think of a way to make it up to my wife. Maybe I'll by her one of those Lexuses with the big bow on top. Nah, still not enough.
Trust me: Don't see this movie.

"Jersey Girl" is a romantic comedy written and directed by a kinder, gentler Kevin Smith. It's the kind of movie Hugh Grant might make, except for the way Smith has with his dialogue, which is truer and more direct than we expect. There are a couple of scenes here where a video store clerk cuts directly to the bottom line, and it feels like all sorts of romantic rules and regulations are being rewritten.
The movie stars Ben Affleck as Ollie Trinke, a hotshot Manhattan publicist whose beloved wife Gertrude (Jennifer Lopez) is great with child. I would hesitate to reveal that she died in childbirth if I had not already read and heard this information, oh, like five hundred times, so obsessed is the nation with Ben and J. Lo. Lopez is luminous in her few scenes, helping to explain why Ollie remains so true to her memory that he remains celibate for many years.
His career meanwhile goes to pieces. Under pressure to hold a job while raising a daughter, he loses it one day, fatally offending his employers by causing a scene at the opening of a Hard Rock Cafe; he fails to understand why he should take Will Smith seriously ("Yeah, like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air is ever gonna have a movie career"). By the time the story resumes, he has moved back to New Jersey and is living in the same house with his father Bart (George Carlin) and his beloved daughter Gertie (Raquel Castro), who is now about 7. He's not in public relations anymore; he works with his dad in the public works department.
Because Ben Affleck is a movie star and looks like one, you might expect him to start dating eventually, but no. You might expect that he could find another high-paying PR job, but no. He doesn't, because then there wouldn't be a movie. When a movie isn't working, we get all logical about things like this, but when it works, we relax.
Several times a week, Ollie and Gertie go to the local video store, where she plunders the kiddie section while he makes a quick dash through the bamboo curtain to grab a porno. One night he's confronted by Maya (Liv Tyler), the clerk who claims she's taking a survey about pornography usage, and asks Ollie how many times a week he masturbates. She is seriously disturbed by his reply, alarmed to learn he has had no sex in seven years, and informs him, "We're gonna have some sex."
And it's in a scene like this that Kevin Smith shows why he's such a good comedy writer. There is a bedrock of truth in the scene, which is based on embarrassment and shyness and Maya's disconcerting ability to say exactly what she's thinking, and when Ollie tries to explain why he has remained celibate (except for his relationship with countless porno titles), she patiently explains about sex: "It's the same thing only you're saving the $2 rental fee."
Inarguable logic, but he demurs, finally breaking down and agreeing to a lunch date. And thus does love reenter Ollie's life. For Maya may be bold about sex, but she is serious about love, and soon like Gertie is saying "Hey, you're the lady from the video store" at a moment when it would be much, much better had she not walked into the room.
Liv Tyler is a very particular talent who has sometimes been misused by directors more in love with her beauty than with her appropriateness for their story. Here she is perfectly cast, as the naive and sincere Maya, whose boldness is not a seduction technique but an act of generosity, almost of mercy. It takes a special tone for a woman to convince us she wants to sleep with a man out of the goodness of her heart, but Tyler finds it, and it brings a sweetness to the relationship.
Kevin Smith I believe has spent almost as much time in video stores as Quentin Tarantino, and his study of ancient cliches is put to good use in the closing act of his movie, which depends on not one but three off-the-shelf formulas: (1) The choice between the big city and staying with your family in a small town; (2) the parent who arrives at a school play just at the moment when the child onstage is in despair because that parent seems to be missing, and (3) the Slow Clap Syndrome. Smith is a gifted writer and I believe he knew exactly what he was doing by assembling these old reliables. I'm not sure he couldn't have done better, but by then we like the characters so much that we give the school play a pass.
Besides, without the school play, we wouldn't get a chance to see the set constructed for little Gertie by two of the guys who work with Bart and Ollie in the public works department. Let it be said that the Lyric Opera's set for "Madama Butterfly" was only slightly more elaborate.

Ik hoop het niet iig, want het is ook alweer een tijd geleden dat m'n andere favo regisseurs een klapper hebben afgeleverd, zoals bv de Coen broertjes, Scorcese, Allen, Lynch, Carpenter, Argento enz

Waarom gebeurt mij dit nou nooit?
Had ik niet verwacht na alle negatieve reacties te hebben gelezen. Ok het is geen Clerks maar vond hem toch beter dan die andere View Askew films.
Het verhaal is wel een standaard Hollywood drama/romantisch drama, maar wel heel goed uitgevoerd! Alles is heel geloofwaardig en niet zo overdreven. Aan het einde zie je dat hij het gemaakt heeft voor zijn overleden "pop" (pa). Denk dat dat ook de reden is van deze wendig na die andere films.
En er zitten zeker wel hele leuke grappen in! De eerste scene waar die kinderen wat voorlezen en die ene gast zijn blaadje is opgegeten door de hond, maar hij poepte het niet uit. En met die baby dat hij die luier moet verschonen met al die poeder haha. "Only married people show eachother there..eh...eh parts.
Het is zeker geen hoogstandje zoals Clerks, maar echt een volwassen degelijke film die erg geloofwaardig is.
Kevin Smith stelt heel erg teleur met dit prulwerk. Het verhaal is al zoveel keren gedaan en dus onorginieel. Wat deze film konden redden waren goede grappen, maar er ging mij zelfs geen een glimlachje van af.
