Finland denkt dat Rusland mogelijk een rol heeft gespeeld bij de Koranverbranding bij de Turkse ambassade in Stockholm. De Koranverbrander, de rechts-extremistische politicus Rasmus Paludan, zou banden hebben met Rusland. Dat zei de Finse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Pekka Haavisto zaterdag in een interview op de Finse televisie.
“De mogelijke banden van Paludan met Rusland zijn onderzocht en er zijn bepaalde connecties in zijn omgeving gevonden”, zei Haavisto. “Het roept de vraag op of een derde partij, bijvoorbeeld Rusland of een andere partij die tegen het NAVO-lidmaatschap is, probeert te stoken en te provoceren. Dit is onvergeeflijk.”

Egyptische auteur test de vrijheid van meningsuiting van Zweden door de Torah te verbranden, Israëlische regering voorkomt het
An anti-Israel demonstration in Stockholm, Sweden, that was intended to include the burning of a Torah scroll was canceled late Thursday afternoon as a direct result of Israeli government intervention.
The Torah is Judaism’s holiest text, and is written with special ink on a special parchment by a Jewish scribe.
“The individual who was organizing the demonstration withdrew his permit application from the police,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Havat told JewishPress.com.
The anti-Israel organizer is an Egyptian author currently living in Sweden who planned to hold the demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm, according to a report broadcast earlier in the day by KAN Reshet Bet, Israel’s public radio station.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Israeli Embassy in Sweden acted immediately and decisively to prevent the shocking and humiliating event from taking place,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The actions included, among other things, contacting the top of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Stockholm Police, as well as the Swedish Embassy in Israel, and activating Jewish and other organizations.
“As a result of our actions, the event at this stage is frozen,” the statement added.

Religies hebben geen monopolie op heiligheid, er bestaat ook seculiere heiligheid
Verbijsterend pas is de houding van Zweden. Net als alle mogelijke buitenlandse politici buitelden ook Zweedse gezagsdragers over elkaar heen om in gepeperde taal Paludan te veroordelen. Maar waarom is er dan niet ingegrepen? Nou, dat had te maken met de grondwet, zo legde de politie uit. Het recht op vrije meningsuiting, weet je?
Op die smoes kun je reageren met een verhandeling over vrije meningen en grondwetten. Maar je kan het ook laten bij een retorische vraag. Stel, een Holocaust-ontkennende nazi zou aankondigen dat hij op een plein in Stockholm het dagboek van Anne Frank ging verbranden. Zou hij dan ook bescherming krijgen van de politie en de Zweedse grondwet?
Religies hebben geen monopolie op heiligheid. Er bestaat ook seculiere heiligheid. Anne Frank is er een voorbeeld van, maar ook het vrije woord. Maar als je dat laatste voorrecht tot in het absurde doordrijft ondermijn je het.

Wat ook opvalt is dat de Zweedse politie de extreemrechtse provocateur als een soort VIP rondrijdt zodat hij zijn wandaad kan plegen in meerdere steden. Zouden zij bijvoorbeeld een Palestijnse activist ook zo rondrijden door Zweden zodat hij in elke stad de Israëlische vlag kan verbranden uit protest tegen de misdaden van die, door Amnesty International beschreven als, racistische apartheidsstaat? Natuurlijk niet.
Laten we wel wezen, Zweden zou nooit een moslim het hele land rondrijden met miljoenen euro’s aan politiebescherming om een bijbel te verbranden.
Waar men boeken verbrandt, verbrandt men uiteindelijk ook mensen
On May 10, 1933 student groups at universities across Germany carried out a series of book burnings of works that the students and leading Nazi party members associated with an “un-German spirit.” Enthusiastic crowds witnessed the burning of books by Brecht, Einstein, Freud, Mann and Remarque, among many other well-known intellectuals, scientists and cultural figures, many of whom were Jewish. The largest of these book bonfires occurred in Berlin, where an estimated 40,000 people gathered to hear a speech by the propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, in which he pronounced that “Jewish intellectualism is dead” and endorsed the students’ “right to clean up the debris of the past.”
The response to the book burnings was immediate and widespread. Counter demonstrations took place in New York and other American cities, including Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago. Journalists in the American and world press expressed shock and dismay at these attacks on German intellectual freedom, and various authors wrote in support of their assaulted German brethren. Artists, writers, doctors, and other intellectuals fled Germany, prompted by the barbarity of the book burnings and by continuing acts of Nazi persecution.
Such barbarity was just the beginning, however. One can see in retrospect how the book burnings and other steps to remove “Jewish influence” from German institutions foreshadowed much more catastrophic Nazi plans for the Jews of Europe. Eerily, among the books consigned to the flames in 1933 were the works of the nineteenth century Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, who in 1822 penned the prophetic words, “Where they burn books, they will, in the end, burn human beings too.”
