Tussen regeringstroepen en paramilitaire troepen (beide van de overheid) zijn gevechten ontstaan in Soedan.
Op 15 april 2023 braken gevechten uit tussen de Soedanese strijdkrachten en de Rapid Support Forces in heel Soedan, waarbij gevechten werden gemeld in het presidentiële paleis en het RSF-hoofdkwartier. Er werden ook gevechten gemeld op Khartoem International Airport en Merowe Airport, die beide door de RSF hebben beweerd te hebben gevangengenomen. Geweervuur en botsingen werden ook gemeld in delen van Khartoem en El Obeid Airport in Noord-Kordofan.

Longtime Sudanese dictator, Omar al-Bashir, faced mass protests in 2019. This led to a military coup in October 2019. A joint civilian-military government was created that was supposed to oversee a transition period, however, tensions grew between the civilian and political leadership over the details and timetable for the transition. Predictably, the civilian leadership wanted a quicker transition to full civilian rule and democratic elections, while the military leaders wanted a delayed transition and continued autonomy for the military.
This led to a second coup in 2021 by the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that ousted the civilian leadership. The RSF are an autonomous paramilitary organization, over 100,000 strong, that was formed under al-Bashir's rule. Led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (nicknamed "Hemeti"), it is notorious for its cruelty and human rights abuses. Its strength has allowed it to secure lucrative economic assets, making Hemeti one of the richest men in Sudan.
Although Hemeti's support was instrumental in helping the military push out the civilian leadership, tensions have grown in the following years. The military has grown worried about the RSF's accumulation of power, especially given Hemeti's well-known political ambitions. The military's own plan for a political transition thus required that the RSF be integrated into the military within two years. Hemeti has naturally resisted this.
Both parties have been maneuvering to try and get public opinion on their side, with limited success. Continued protests against the military, combined with economic dysfunction, led to the military agreeing to restore a civilian-led government last December. Hemeti increasingly agitated against military rule in recent months, apparently in a bid to drum up popular support for his coup plot, though it doesn't seem most Sudanese have bought into this cynical ploy.
All of this has led to an attempted coup at the time of this writing, with the RSF attempting to seize control of the national government from the military.

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s ruling military concluded a review of an agreement with Russia to build a navy base on the Red Sea in the African country, two Sudanese officials said Saturday.
They said the deal was awaiting the formation of a civilian government and a legislative body to be ratified before it takes effect. The officials said Moscow met Sudan’s most recent demands, including providing more weapons and equipment.
“They cleared all our concerns. The deal has become OK from the military side,” one official said.
The officials did not provide further details and spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. A spokesman for the Sudanese military declined to comment.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said Thursday the deal still needs ratification by Sudan’s yet-to-be-formed legislative body.
Sudan has been without a parliament since a popular uprising forced the military overthrow of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. The country has been mired in political chaos since an October 2021 military coup derailed its short-lived transition to democracy.
The deal, which surfaced in December 2021, is part of Moscow’s efforts to restore a regular naval presence in various parts of the globe. It was reached during al-Bashir’s reign.
The agreement allows Russia to set up a naval base with up to 300 Russian troops, and to simultaneously keep up to four navy ships, including nuclear-powered ones, in the strategic Port Sudan on the Red Sea.
The base would ensure the Russian navy’s presence in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and spare its ships the need for long voyages to reach the area, according to Viktor Bondarev, the former Russian air force chief.
In exchange, Russia is to provide Sudan with weapons and military equipment. The agreement is to last for 25 years, with automatic extensions for 10-year periods if neither side objects.
In June 2021, Sudan’s Chief of General Staff, Gen. Mohammed Othman al-Hussein, told a local television station that Khartoum would review the agreement.
In February last year Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, held talks with senior Russian officials in Moscow.
Upon his return from the weeklong trip, Dagalo said his country didn’t have objections to Russia or any other country establishing a base on its territory as it poses no threat to Sudan’s national security.
“If any country wants to open a base and it is in our interests and doesn’t threaten our national security, we have no problem in dealing with anyone, Russian or otherwise,” he said.

Geld komt in die landen meestal toch terecht bij de (corrupte) elite die alleen zichzelf en wat vriendjes verrijkt. Zelfs in relatief rijke en stabiele Afrikaanse landen zoals b.v. Gabon of Kameroen houd je daardoor heel veel armoede.quote:

Verder zijn veel Afrikaanse landen geen echte natiestaten, maar een lappendeken van tribale invloeden waardoor je nooit de neuzen dezelfde kant op krijgt om er op nationale schaal iets van te maken.
Er is weinig tot geen voordeel bij rust en status quo, dat is het probleem. Teveel mensen en landen die een slaatje kunnen slaan uit onrust.quote:

Wagner zal zich daar naar hartelust kunnen uitleven, zoals ze ook in oa Mali en Syrië hebben gedaan, lang voordat ze bekendheid kregen door hun wreedheden in Oekraïne.
