Yep.

FREELOADER OVER 4 DAGEN

*Animal Crossing besteld*

FreeLoader, the revolutionary import game player for GameCube, is to start shipping worldwide on Wednesday 5th February.
Priced at just £19.99, Datel's FreeLoader lets you play any GameCube game from around the world...on any GameCube console! Using FreeLoader you can now, for example, easily play Japanese or U.S. games on any European GameCube console.

Just imagine...at last you can play Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing and many other fantastic games that haven't been released in Europe!

If youre one of the many gamers that bought an imported GameCube console and you now want to play games from your own country, then FreeLoader is also ideal for this task. Whichever way you use FreeLoader, no modifications to your console are needed and your consoles warranty is kept intact.

Despite using complex proprietary technology, FreeLoader couldn't be easier to use. Simply load up the FreeLoader disc, then swap it with your import game disc. That's all there is to it! In a few second your import game will load. It works on both PAL and NTSC consoles, and you don't even need an NTSC compatible TV set to play NTSC games!

We recommend you always buy a game designed for your own region wherever possible due to language differences and extra features, etc. However there will be occasions when you simply cant obtain a game, or are not prepared to wait many months for a foreign title to be released in your region. In these cases, FreeLoader is your passport to playing any game, from any country, on any GameCube.

You can order FreeLoader direct from us now, and we will send it to you as soon as possible. Or if you'd prefer to wait, FreeLoader will soon be on sale in all good video game stores.

Note: please be patient when waiting for your order, as we have many, many customer pre-orders to fulfill which do take priority. We will endeavour to send your FreeLoader as soon as we can, but it may take a few days to receive your order.

And about time, too. Import games a reality on PAL GameCube's as Datel reveals plans to release it multi-region product in Europe

17:58 The wait is over. Nearly. Datel's much delayed FreeLoader device - which allows gamers to run import games on a PAL GC - releases in the UK next Wednesday, Feb 5. Furthermore, Datel will follow this with the release of its all-singing, all-dancing Action Replay device for GameCube, which also incorporates FreeLoader. Action Replay ships on February 12.
FreeLoader itself allows the play of NTSC software on PAL machines and vice versa. This is clearly huge news for GC owners, with Nintendo of Europe the worst offender of all the major hardware manufacturers for bringing games to PAL owners long after US and Japanese releases, if at all. Which means... Dare we say it... (drum roll, trumpet fanfare, naked pole dancers) Animal Crossing! Sweet, wholesome, honourable, glorious justice!

Een voorproefje op F-Zero maar dan in de vorm van een goede game

quote:
Tube Slider
An exclusive new GCN racer from the maker of F-Zero: Maximum velocity. Hands-on, plus 75 screenshots and first videos.

January 31, 2003 - Travel back with us to the beginnings of Nintendo's next-generation console. Still without a name, the platform was simply referred to as "Project Dolphin," and very few software houses had officially signed on to back it. So Nintendo created its own. Teaming with Dentsu Corporation, a famous design and advertising company in Japan, NdCube (Nintendo-Dentsu Cube) was formed: a brand new studio focused specifically on the development of Nintendo products.
Fast forward more than a year. NdCube's first projects were revealed, not for the finally announced GameCube, but rather for Game Boy Advance. Most notably, the firm had secretly been working on F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, a new, high-octane version of the classic SNES racer. There was some speculation that since Nintendo had handed the GBA take on the franchise to NdCube it might also be working on a GameCube version. And indeed, perhaps it was.

Snap back to the present. Sega's Amusement Vision subsidiary is now officially piloting the next-generation incarnation of F-Zero. But nonetheless NdCube has finally arrived with its first GameCube project -- not published by Nintendo, but rather by returning hardware and one-time software giant NEC. What a crazy world, huh? Well, it gets even crazier. Enter Tube Slider, designed exclusively for GameCube by NdCube. It looks like F-Zero. It kind of plays like F-Zero. But it's not.

Features

Fast-paced futuristic racer
Compete on 10 tubed courses set across the globe
Choose from 15 enhanced and ultra-tweaked hover crafts
Multiple gameplay modes from Grand Prix to Free Run and Tutorial
Turbo and boost enhancements temporarily add speed to vehicles in races
Side-boosters on vehicles can be used to take sharp turns
Four-player mode
Does not run in progressive scan mode or support Dolby Pro Logic II
Gameplay
Tube Slider arrives out of nowhere. Yesterday we didn't even know it existed and it'll be on store shelves before the end of February. How's that for a surprise? The game is a futuristic racer in which super-speeding hovercrafts glide and soar through courses consisting of transparent tubes. It reminds us of F-Zero, sure. But it also reminds us of the N64 racer Aero Gauge, if you can remember that one.

The premise of the game is simple. You, as the racer of your choice -- there are some 15 different vehicle types, eight of which are unlockable from the start -- compete in a Grand Prix mode of events against several computer-controller AI characters. The point is to manipulate the twisting, turning, dropping and rising tubes and outmaneuver the competition to advance. It starts out easy enough, and the speed of vehicles is fast, but noticeably subdued when compared to how quick everything moves along later into the racer. As in F-Zero, the L and R buttons control side boosters which sway the vehicles left and right, and which can be used to take ultra-tight turns. Meanwhile, arrows along the tracks point the direction, and it's entirely too possible to ride walls and yes, even the ceilings of the futuristic tubes. A gauge on-screen measures boost and turbo, both of which can be used to offer temporary pushes in speed -- an oldie, but goodie. The setup is remarkably standard, no doubt, but controls are tight and the sense of speed, in our early play tests, is so far intriguing. Supposedly it's possible to gain vehicles that roar at roughly double the pace that our current stock does, which would be a sight to see.

The fact that you can go up and all around the insides of these tubed tracks proves both interesting and simultaneously disorienting, in our opinion. Skidding around a corner and riding up a ceiling could and sometimes does slow down crafts and gaining control of them again can be momentarily troublesome.

All in all, our initial impression of the game is positive, but so far we're not exactly blown away or excited in the same way that we are about F-Zero, Tube Slider's obvious biggest competitor.

Graphics
Very futuristic. NdCube has done a solid job of building tubular tracks that curve to and from at every chance. There are layers and layers of backgrounds and all of the tracking grates feature transparent tiles so that you can see everything racing by underneath. It looks good. Unfortunately, there are no reflections on the structure so it doesn't full realize the impression of being encapsulated in glass. Textures are generally crisp and colorful.

Tube Sliders

Level themes range from sunset backdrops to highly industrial tubes filled with all sorts of steel tiles, and there is even an area in which you speed around a gigantic tree, its branches curving around the course as you go. Some of the color choices seem a bit bright and there is the occasional texture that lacks clarity, but overall the style is moderately impressive. The best part is that everything books along at 60 frames per second.

Outlook
What the-? Where did this game come from? We're not exactly sure, but in the end it should make for a worthy addition to any speed junky's gaming library and a decent substitute for those eagerly awaiting a filler until F-Zero arrives later this year.

Oh, and NEC: welcome back to the gaming arena. It's been too long since Bonk's Adventure.

Ikaruga Review

quote:
Ikaruga (JPN) Review

In a genre that is all but dead, Treasure continues to innovate. Ikaruga, the spiritual successor to the legendary Radiant Silvergun, is Treasures latest masterpiece. With incredible depth and replayability, as well as fantastic visuals and spot-on control, this one unquestioningly belongs on the shelf of every action gamer.

Ikaruga is a top-down two-dimensional shooter, like Capcoms Mars Matrix or even the arcade classic Galaga. Players assume the role of Shinra, the only survivor of a group of freedom-fighting rebels. After being shot down by the evil Tenro Horai, Shinra takes to the skies once more in his new ship, the Ikaruga. He is the last hope for his people, and must face the Tenro Horai Empire alone. However, none of this really matters once the game starts. There are no cut scenes or character development here. It is a shooter, after all.

At first glance, Ikaruga is merely a standard shooter with a gimmick: the color system. The Ikaruga ship can change from black to white and back again on the fly. Every enemy is also colored either black or white, and fires bullets of their color. The Ikaruga has the ability to absorb bullets of its own color, storing that energy up for screen-clearing laser attacks. However, bullets of the opposite color will destroy the Ikaruga in a single hit. Colliding with any enemy or a wall will also destroy the ship. Furthermore, attacking an enemy of the opposite color will deal double-damage; this is especially important for bosses and larger foes. Finally, destroying an opponent of the same color will release a small group of like-colored bullets from the exploding enemy, just in case the player didnt already have enough to deal with. After a short while, it becomes apparent that the color system is essential to Ikaruga's gameplay, and is not just a gimmick.

At times, the screen will be completely filled with bullets of different colors and the only way to survive is by switching back and forth at just the right moments. Bosses will often create a maze of bullets in their color, shooting just a handful of opposite-colored bullets. If the player is bold enough to navigate the bullet maze, he can cause double-damage to the boss with his opposite-colored bullets. Otherwise, one can play it safe and change colors so that the maze of bullets is simply absorbed and only a small fraction of the boss attack needs to be dodged.

To add further depth to an already complicated shooter, Treasure has created a combo system. By defeating enemies in like-colored groups of three, one creates a combo. As one continues to destroy them in like-colored groups of three, the multipliers keep increasing. At the end of each level, the game grades the player based on a number of factors, but the scores earned from high-chain combos are the best way to rank well. Pushing for just a slightly higher score creates tons of replay value, and players can even enter their high scores online into the world ranking with a special password system.

Surprisingly, there are no power-ups or upgrades in Ikaruga. The ship is armed with a set of rapid-fire lasers, and a massive homing laser attack. As mentioned before, the homing laser attack charges up with each bullet absorbed by the Ikaruga. Despite the lack of different attacks, it never feels as though the game is missing something. Perhaps its the color system that keeps players too involved to wonder about alternative weapons.

Each level, of which there are five, is markedly different from the last. The first level is pretty standard as shooters go, with lots of ships to blow up and a fairly fast pace. After that, however, things become wildly different. The second level sees the player through an underground factory, requiring the player to both maneuver through tight spaces and deal with the Tenro Horai. Further levels continue to mix things up, and each one has a different feel to it. Each level is masterfully crafted to take full advantage of both the color and combo systems.

2D shooters arent often known for amazing visuals, but Ikaruga manages to pull off some serious eye candy. Everything except the bullets are fully rendered in gorgeous 3D, and it pays off. Flying high above the 3D landscape is a nice visual treat, and the explosion effects are fantastic. The game also runs at a solid 60 frames per second, with dozens of ships and hundreds of bullets on screen at any given time. If theres a downside to the visuals, its that things arent terribly colorful. Expect to see lots of whites, blacks and grays.

Depending on the players television, there may be another problem with the visuals. Since it was originally an arcade game, built for arcade-screen dimensions, the default play mode forces ugly black borders along the sides of the screen, shrinking the play field dramatically. Thankfully, by turning the TV onto its side, one can play the game in full screen. There is also the option to play the game as if it was a horizontal shooter, which works for those who cant turn their screens and want the full screen effect.

The orchestrated soundtrack isnt very memorable, but it is of a high quality. During the game, it adds a fair amount of intensity to the goings-on, but few gamers will be humming the Ikaruga themes later in the day. Sound effects are standard fare for the genre, with lots of convincing explosions and some underwhelming gunfire.

Ikaruga supports two players, but strangely, the two player ships can actually interact with one another. One player can physically push the others ship across the playing field. This is incredibly dangerous, especially when carefully maneuvering through the tight spaces between enemy fire. However, two players also have an advantage in that one can easily provide cover for the other. If a boss is shooting swarms of white bullets, player one can become white and block all the bullets while player two blasts the boss with the opposite color.

There are only five levels in Ikaruga, and once the player is skilled enough to make it through, the whole game can be beaten in under half an hour. However, this isnt one of those games to play with the goal of just killing the final boss. Each difficulty setting, of which there are three, significantly changes the way the game plays. Even the most skilled gamer will really be put to the test when trying to complete hard mode with a single credit. On top of that, mastering the combo system and getting high scores, or even managing a perfect round, can provide dozens of hours of replay.

Overall Value - Ikaruga is one of the best shooters out there, hands down. Games like this simply arent made very often, especially not of this caliber. It has incredible depth for a shooter, replay value through the roof, and most importantly, its fun to play. Those that like action games even a little bit should consider snagging Ikaruga when its released in the US this April.

Importing Ikaruga: Ikaruga is very import friendly. All of the menus are in English, and what little Japanese text exists isnt required to play the game.

Gameplay 10
Graphics 8.5
Sound 7.5
Control 9.0
Replay 8.5
Challenge 10
Overall 9.4
