And it was just another Tuesday on retail-investor social media.
The announcement that Bill and Melinda Gates are divorcing caught the whole world by surprise, but by Monday evening members of the Reddit board r/GME had unearthed an almost two-month-old post by user Jobom3 tying a spike in borrowed GameStop shares to the likelihood that billionaire hedge funders and their wealthy investors were increasing their short positions as part of a plan to prepare for their impending divorces.
On the morning of March 11, a Reddit post pointed out that more than 1 million GameStop shares had been borrowed in premarket action, a signal that pro-GameStop Redditors interpreted as a signal of a new skirmish in the ongoing conflict between hedge funds trying to short GameStop into oblivion and Regular Joe investors hell-bent on proving that the videogame retailer is fundamentally undervalued and should not be killed off by wealthy Wall Street traders playing a rigged game.
“Another 1 million shares borrowed from ETFs in pre-market …” blared a Reddit post headline that morning, with a screenshot appearing to show the availability of GameStop shares from ETFs exposed to the stock.
Minutes later, Jobom3 piped up with this theory: “I think they are just buying time to secure their personal assets,” read the comment. “Moving them to offshore or divorce their wives and put the money in their name. Tricks like that. At least that’s what I would do.”
While the comment did not receive much attention on March 11, it blew up late Monday after news of the Gates’s split dropped, and users clamored to give Jobom3 credit for seeing the bombshell coming.
“WHAT ELSE DOES THE PROPHIT KNOW” replied one user late Monday night.
“Bill Gates and Melinda Gates is just a start???” posited another.
“My man got all the infinity stones,” added another.
Those comments quickly turned into a bull case for GameStop’s value, with users coalescing around the theory that that Bill Gates’s getting unhitched is a huge data point in support of Jobom3’s thesis that at least some wealthy short sellers of GameStop are fighting the short squeeze as a cover to protect their assets from the possibility of a market implosion that will lead to an army of greedy future ex-spouses.
Rickety markets have historically been bad indicators for hedge-fund managers, and seeing two of the wealthiest men in the world, Microsoft MSFT, +1.32% co-founder Gates and Amazon’s AMZN, +1.10% Jeff Bezos, announcing the ends of long marriages in less than two years’ time can be interpreted by the willing as a trend that is still kicking up steam.
But while tying the coming joy of white-shoe divorce lawyers to GameStop’s performance might seem difficult, it was easier than it might appear to GameStop’s Reddit army.
“Maybe not directly to GME,” mused one user “But [Bill Gates] probably has money tied up in hedge funds and other investments that are going down when they all get liquidated and the market crashes.”

Idea dinners are essentially a gathering where billionaires burn money, laugh at poor people, and make plans for not-coordinated-but-pretty-fucking-coordinated moves in the stock market.
It is likely that anyone who is anybody on Wall St at least heard this idea proposed between 2015 2014 (when Melvin Capital first entered their short position) and 2020.

Keep a close eye on Jeff Bezos in the near. I have a theory about his recent divorce. As many of you may know, the economy will be having a major correction soon. Stocks could easily go down 50% or more. Bezos, being close with the CIA and the richest man in the world, probably knows this. He knows that he will lose tens of billions of dollars. So what does he want to do? Sell as much Amazon stock as possible. Because his entire net worth is in Amazon stock. But imagine if Bezos suddenly started offloading billions in Amazon shares? The stock price would crash. The entire market could crash from something that big. He could also get charged with securities fraud if he sells because he knows something will go down soon.
So what is old Jeff to do?
Follow the lead of the only executive to get away scot free after Enron collapsed. When Enron was about to collapse, all the executives sold millions of dollars of their shares. They ended up getting charged for this fraud. Except for one man. He just so happened to divorce his wife for some random stripper. Right before the collapse. A judge ordered him to sell his shares and split the proceeds with his now ex wife. So he was able to get away will it all.
My theory is that Bezos know that the stock market will soon collapse. He wants to have a way to sell off his shares without getting in trouble or alerting the public that something is wrong. So he orchestrates some high profile affair and his wife leaving him. He makes sure there is a ton of drama to keep it in the news. Then during the divorce proceedings, he is "ordered" to sell his stock. So nobody thinks twice.
It turns out that the person who leaked the affair story to the press was none other than the brother of the mistress. He also just happened to come out an publicly say that Bezos and his wife are't telling the truth about the divorce and that they have other reasons.
So keep an eye out on this. When he starts to offload his Amazon shares, you know the collapse is imminent.

The Enron scandal eventually led to the bankruptcy of the company, and Enron shareholders lost $74 billion leading up to its bankruptcy, and Enron's employees lost their jobs and billions of dollars in pension benefits.
Enron CEO Jeff Skilling was sentenced to 24 years in prison, former CEO Kenneth Lay died from a massive heart attack before serving time. Another Enron executive, Clifford Baxter, committed suicide in 2002 shortly before he was due to testify before Congress.
But what about Lou Pai?
Pai joined Enron in 1987, when it was just a regional energy supplier.

During his Enron career, Skilling put Pai in charge of multiple Enron subsidiaries.

Pai's frequent strip club visits during his time at Enron proved to be a blessing in disguise.
It led to an affair with stripper Melanie Fewell (who was also married) and resulted in a pregnancy.
Upon learning of the affair, Pai's then-wife of over 20 years Lanna, with whom he has two children, filed for divorce.
This is the crazy part:
To satisfy the financial terms of his divorce settlement, Pai cashed out $250 million of his Enron stock, just months before the company's stock price collapsed.
Pai's early sell-off shielded him from the insider trading charges levelled against other Enron executives who had also secretly sold-off large amounts of stock before the company's financial situation was publicly known.
Somehow, through sheer luck (or was it!), Pai had managed to secure a win for himself, his ex-wife and his new wife, Melanie Pai.
While his colleagues were in jail or dead, Pai was using his new found wealth to become the second-largest land owner in Colorado after he purchased the 77500-acre Taylor Ranch for $23 million in 1999. He sold the property in June 2004 for $60 million.
Pai did have to cough up some cash though:
In 2008, he agreed to resolve civil insider trading charges against him with an out-of-court settlement of $31.5 million.
Pai was not charged with any criminal wrongdoing in the Enron scandal and exercised his 5th Amendment rights in the subsequent Enron class action lawsuits.
But still, it's fair to say that the tale of Lou Pai offers a lesson for corporate executives looking to use divorce as a hustle to liquidate their stock holdings without upsetting regulators or shareholders.

The conspiracy theory goes:
It’s an attempt at reducing sell panic. If Gates starts selling his stock with no reason, people are going to assume he has info about an impending dip, and they will sell theirs. Gates has so much stock that it could take a few days to actually liquidate it all, and that whole time the price will be plummeting and he will get less money.
Frame it as a divorce and “lawyer says I need to pay the ex this much money,” then he can liquidate with less panic from other shareholders dropping the price.
There are also likely tax advantages to liquidating to fulfill court requirements
