Remembering JOHN PEEL (30 Aug 1939 – 25 Oct 2004).
While it’s impossible to sum up succinctly the support he gave to countless acts early in their careers – from Marc Bolan, Rod Stewart and The Faces to David Bowie, The Fall and The Undertones, and many more – his influence remains undimmed.
Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers has said of Peel: "How many of us, as schoolkids, listened to Peel on a transistor radio in the dark when we were supposed to be asleep? How many records did you buy because you "heard it on Peel"?”
Jake’s so right. For without Peel’s airplay, many of us would today only be aware of a small fraction of the rich diversity of sounds borne on these shores and those overseas – from punk, reggae and electronica to post-punk, indie rock and British hip hop.
It’s no overstatement to say that music would have been significantly a lot duller without him; and I’d have very little to say on this page!
Ik noem een Tony van Heemschut, een Loeki Knol, een Brammetje Biesterveld en natuurlijk een Japie Stobbe !
