I haven't verified all of this yet, but here's what I've picked up about Justin's wrestling and ground game. I've seen all sorts of speculation about him stuffing Khabib's TDs and scrambling out of bad spots for the entire fight, but this is what we know:
- He was taken down by both Poirier and Alvarez. In both cases, he got back to his feet quickly
- He was a D1 wrestler about 10-12 years ago. Of course, wrestling is a use-it-or-lose-it skill. Romero and Hendo were Olympians who were outwrestled by much less credentialed fighters years later in MMA. According to this article, current UFC LW Gregor Gillespie was a notch above Chandler (and most likely Gaethje) in collegiate wrestling
- Some no-name guy in WSOF got the best of him on the ground, but Gaethje survived the round and won the fight. Maybe someone else can post a video or GIF.
- He did wrestling slams in his early MMA days, but abandoned them long ago. They probably drained too much of his energy. That's the same reason Jon Jones quit doing suplexes after the Bonnar fight
- He allegedly does wrestling training about once a week, focusing almost exclusively on TDD and scrambles. Maybe this changed for the Khabib fight, but that's what his previous routine was. His submission/sub-defense game is a huge unknown
I have no agenda by posting this. I'm actually pulling for Gaethje, though I mostly just want to see a good fight. If you have anything to add or debunk what I said, feel free to chime in.
