Father who murdered family told friend: 'I won't do anything stupid'

Three days before Rowan Baxter murdered his estranged wife Hannah Clarke and their three children he was distraught and crying in a restaurant but promised "he wouldn't do anything stupid".

Baxter spoke with his friend of 10 years John Kane* (who did not want his real name published) for two hours at the Brisbane eatery last Sunday afternoon.

Mr Kane, who once used Baxter as a personal trainer, said he looks back on their last meeting and asks himself if he missed something that would have given him a clue that something horrible was about to happen.

Friend of Rowan Baxter who spent two hours with him three days before the murder of his wife and three children.

"Could I have done something to avoid it? Honestly I don't think I did miss anything," Mr Kane said. "The last thing I said to him as he was walking away was, 'Mate, don't do anything stupid', and he sort of turned as he was walking away and he just said: 'No mate, I'm not going to do anything stupid.' I was sort of thinking that he might self-harm."

Mr Kane said Baxter was distraught, telling him Hannah was preventing him from seeing their children.

"He said: 'She can do whatever she wants to me but don't take my kids away from me, that's all I've got left in life.'"

On Wednesday at about 8.30am, Hannah and her three children Aaliyah, 6, Laianah, 4, and Trey, 3, were on the school run when Baxter, armed with a container of accelerant, murdered them.

Investigators believe Baxter doused the car while he was still inside before getting out, lighting it and taking his own life in the street near the burning car in the Brisbane suburb of Camp Hill.

The parents and brother of Hannah Clarke spoke on A Current Affair on Friday night about Baxter's controlling tendencies and the escalation in his abusive behaviour.

"Not all domestic abuse is physical, and mental is probably one of the hardest ones to pick up on," Hannah's brother Nat said.

Their mother Suzanne said that Hannah herself had justified her husband's actions at times, saying that it wasn't domestic abuse because it hadn't become physical.

"We didn't see it for a long time," father Lloyd said. "Looking back now, in hindsight, if only we could have seen this and gotten her out of there earlier."

Sandra Taylor, an estranged cousin of Baxter, told Nine News on Saturday night that Baxter had a history of ‘‘very threatening’’ behaviour.

‘‘Everybody else, they’re shocked, but I’m not,’’ she said. Ms Taylor said that when she had previously offered Hannah support after she left Baxter, his behaviour became menacing towards her as well.

Mr Kane said he was not trying to justify Baxter's actions "for one minute, not even for one split second". He called for more early intervention to prevent domestic violence.

Rowan Baxter’s cousin reveals history of violence

A relative of the man who killed his wife and three children in an unspeakable act of violence in Brisbane this week, has detailed his history of violence.

"I think we need to get to a point in this discussion where we are not just immediately saying all men in this situation are monsters, even though what he has done is absolutely monstrous," he said.

"We need to get to a point where we ask: what did drive this guy to this point where he reached a state in his mind where all rational thinking disappeared and he became the monster that he was on that day.

'Not all domestic abuse is physical': Hannah Clarke's family opens up about 'controlling' Rowan Baxter

"If someone told me Rowan was capable of that, I would say, no way, not to his kids. He loved his kids more than anything else in the world."

However, Hannah's mother Suzanne said on ACA: "A loving father doesn't do that."

Mr Kane said the marriage took a downward spiral after issues arose in the relationship in September and Hannah and the children moved out at the end of November.

Hannah's family told ACA that the first time Hannah left Baxter, she was so scared that she hid her car in a public car park instead of parking it at her parents' house, where she was staying.

Her mother convinced her to talk to police, despite Hannah's fears that a Domestic Violence Order would infuriate him further.

Hannah Clarke's family speak out

Friends of Hannah Clarke have claimed her estranged husband "tried to break" her wrist just days before the Camp Hill tragedy.

It came to a head on Boxing Day of 2019, when he disappeared with one of their children for four days. That prompted Hannah to finally take out a DVO against him.

Mr Kane said Baxter had been receiving counselling. "Obviously the guy was suffering extreme depression and we really want to try and help men and prevent these things from happening in the future. We have got to identify the triggers that occur."

Women are attracted to assholes. Until it gets real. Then it's the patriarchy's fault we don't have stricter man control laws to protect women from their bad decisions.

De man in kwestie kan er zelf niks aan doen natuurlijk. Waarom verdedig je dit eigenlijk? Ben jij zelf net zo'n gestoord figuur als Rowan Baxter of zo?
Resistance is futile.
