Zeker vijf personen zijn om het leven gekomen bij een vulkaanuitbarsting op het Nieuw-Zeelandse White Island. De politie sluit nog niet uit dat het aantal nog oploopt. Een van de omgekomenen is een ervaren gids van een lokale reisorganisatie.

Op het eiland zijn geen mensen, dood of levend, meer aangetroffen. Dat meldt de Nieuw-Zeelandse politie na het uitvoeren van meerdere verkenningsvluchten boven het eiland. Er worden nog mensen vermist, maar het exacte aantal is niet bekend. Er zijn zeker 22 mensen gewond geraakt. Ze hebben allen brandwonden, meldt de regionale ambulancedienst.

De doden en gewonden zouden uit verschillende landen afkomstig zijn. Of zich Nederlanders onder de slachtoffers bevinden, is nog niet bekend. Het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken in Den Haag zoekt dat uit.

White Island ligt op zo’n 50 kilometer ten noordoosten van het Noordereiland. Het eiland zelf is onbewoond, maar er worden wel toeristische rondleidingen gegeven.

A helicopter parked nearby on the island looks crumpled and covered in ash.

“Those are some of the people (our) boat picked up. Praying for them and their recovery. Woman my mom tended to was in critical condition but seemed strong by the end,” Schade tweeted to his 2,570 followers.

“The helicopters on the island looked destroyed.”

Schade describes himself in his Twitter handle as someone who likes “helping people, photography, reading, gym, traveling, and learning new things”. He says he lives in San Francisco.

“This is so hard to believe. Our whole tour group were literally standing at the edge of the main crater not 30 minutes before,” he tweeted.

“My thoughts (are) with the families of those currently unaccounted for, the people recovering now, and especially the rescue workers.”

He also praised tour operators who helped tend to people in the minutes after the eruption.

“Endless gratitude to that crew for stepping up as first responders,” he wrote.

Police in New Zealand said there are “no signs of life” on a volcanic island that dozens of tourists were visiting when it erupted on Monday.

Twenty-three people were rescued but five of those have died, and police said late on Monday that they believe the people remaining on the island are now all dead too.

After conducting several reconnaissance flights, Police said they believe anyone who could have been taken from the island alive was rescued during the initial evacuation, but did not say how many lives were unaccounted for.

Emergency workers have been unable to return to the island due to unstable conditions, toxic gases, and falling ash.

Almost all of those rescued had sustained injuries, with many suffering severe burns, Police Deputy Commissioner John Tims said during a press conference seven hours after the volcano first erupted.

Many of those on the island at the time of the eruption were tourists from the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship Ovation of the Seas.

“A number of our guests were touring the island today,” the company said. “We will offer all possible assistance to our guests and local authorities. Please keep all those affected in your prayers.”

Footage posted on Twitter showed people scrambling to get off the island moments after the volcano erupted. Another video showed the wreckage of a helicopter that had been flying over the island when the eruption happened.

Moderate volcanic unrest continues at Whakaari/White Island, with substantial gas, steam and mud bursts observed at the vent located at the back of the crater lake. Other monitoring parameters remain elevated and the Volcanic Alert Level stays at Level 2.

Explosive gas and steam-driven mud jetting continues from the active vent area at the back of the crater lake on Whakaari/White Island. The level of activity at the vent is variable and when in a stronger phase, some material is being deposited about the vent area. This style of activity has been present since late September, although it is occurring more frequently now. No volcanic ash is being produced.

Volcanic gas emission and seismic activity continue to remain elevated. Occasional gas smell may have been noted on the North Island mainland, pending on the dominant wind direction. Volcanic tremor also remains at moderate levels in the last week, with some periodic variations, matched with episodes of increased gas-steam jetting and fountaining.

The water level of the crater lake has not changed for the last week, and gas/steam-driven mud fountaining activity continues to be observed from the active vent area on the west side of the 1978/90 Crater Complex, near the 2012 lava dome, at the back of the crater lake.

This fountaining is regularly throwing mud and debris 20-30 metres into the air above the vent. The level of activity is variable and remains within the range expected for moderate volcanic unrest. While the activity is contained to the far side of the lake, the current level of activity does not pose a direct hazard to visitors.

Overall, the monitored parameters continue to be in the expected range for moderate volcanic unrest and associated hazards exist. The monitoring observations bear some similarities with those seen during the 2011-2016 period when Whakaari/White Island was more active and stronger volcanic activity occurred. Observations and data to date suggest that the volcano may be entering a period where eruptive activity is more likely than normal.

The Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 2.

The Aviation Colour Code remains at Yellow.

GNS Science and the National Geohazards Monitoring Centre continues to closely monitor Whakaari/White Island for further signs of activity. Volcanic Alert Level 2 is mostly associated with unrest hazards on the volcano and could include eruptions of steam, gas, mud and rocks. These eruptions can occur with little or no warning.

Het grondoppervlak was ook erg dun en gevoelig, dus kan ook zomaar zijn dat die onder je wegzakt als het eenmaal begint te rommelen. Ik weet niet waar je dan in terechtkomt maar ik denk dat de zuurgraad waar je mee in aanraking komt extreem is.

"Earlier today we conducted an expert judgement and the result is that there is a medium likelihood (40-60% chance) of a future eruption within the next 24 hours."

There is an extremely low likelihood of any potential ash affecting the mainland, but people may smell gas, depending on the prevailing wind direction.

De Nieuw-Zeelandse politie wil vrijdag de lichamen van de slachtoffers van de vulkaanuitbarsting op White Island bergen. Nog zeker acht mensen worden vermist. Zij zijn waarschijnlijk omgekomen door de uitbarsting.

Donorhuid
Artsen in Nieuw-Zeeland zetten alle hens aan dek om de slachtoffers te helpen. Uit een persconferentie bleek dat artsen extra donorhuid hebben aangevraagd vanuit Amerika om de slachtoffers met de brandwonden te kunnen helpen. In totaal is er 120 vierkante meter donorhuid besteld, aldus dokter Peter Watson van het brandwondencentrum in Nieuw-Zeeland. Ook Australië heeft donorhuid gedoneerd.

WHAKATANE, New Zealand (AP) — The eruption was so silent that Lillani Hopkins didn’t hear it over the hum of the boat’s engines. She didn’t turn around until her dad whacked her.

Then she saw it. Huge clouds of ash and steam shooting into the sky. She was so excited, she grabbed her phone out of her dad’s bag and hit record. But then the plume stopped going up and started rolling out over the cliffs — and her awe turned to fear.

Just under the surface of the crater, pressure had been building for months. Now the super-heated water, about 150 degrees Celsius, or 300 Fahrenheit, burst out in a powerful spray. The blast also contained ash, rocks and a few boulders the size of exercise balls, but it was likely the scalding water that was most deadly.

There were 47 tourists on New Zealand’s White Island at the time of Monday’s eruption: 24 from Australia, nine from the U.S., five New Zealanders and others from Germany, Britain, China and Malaysia. Many had taken a day trip from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Ovation of the Seas. Authorities believe 16 people were killed, including several who died later in hospitals. Those who survived the blast had terrible burns and some ran into the sea screaming — a screaming that would not stop.

Three weeks earlier, New Zealand’s seismic monitoring agency GeoNet had raised the alert level on the island from 1 to 2, on a scale where 5 is a major eruption. The agency had noted the water level in the crater lake had been rising since August and that over the previous few weeks there had been an increase in sulfur dioxide gas, which comes from magma deep in the volcano. Many people around the world have asked: How could the tours of the island continue in the face of such warning signs?

One answer may be that people in New Zealand are used to living on a giant seismic fault line that arcs around the Pacific Ocean. They ski on mountains that sometimes belch dark ash onto the snow, and take hikes past pools of boiling mud. They carry on working as minor earthquakes rattle cups from shelves. And they’ve toured White Island for decades, marveling as it steams and belches.

The country’s tourism industry thrives on adventure spiced with a little danger. A 2 on the scale? White Island Tours, the island’s sole tour operator, decided to carry on. Company chairman Paul Quinn issued a statement Wednesday saying that while many questions remain, its priority for now is helping those affected.

Lillani, a 22-year-old student who has studied volcanoes, had taken her dad, Geoff, a pastor, to the island for a 50th birthday present on Monday. Their group’s two guides told them to wear hard hats. They gave them gas masks, which the guides said they could wear if they had trouble with their breathing.

The guides told them the sulfur dioxide and other gases on the island turn acidic when mixed with their saliva, and gave them candies to suck. Lillani has asthma and found she needed to wear the mask near the crater. Her dad noticed his throat getting sore.

As they walked around the island, Lillani was full of enthusiasm, and questions. She asked her guide: What do we do if it erupts? Strap on your mask and take shelter, he told her. Run to the shipping container that’s over there for emergencies, it’s full of supplies.

Aside from their two guides, Lillani and her dad were the only New Zealanders in their tour group. The others were from Asia, America, Europe. Some didn’t speak much English. Lillani loved every moment on the island, which is also known by the Maori name Whakaari.

After 90 minutes, the group got back on the boat, and was just a couple of football fields away from the shore when the volcano erupted. The crew told them to get below deck. Then they asked for people with medical training, and Lillani and her dad, who had both trained in first aid, joined two doctors on deck. A dinghy ferried the injured aboard, 23 in all.

Lillani had never seen anything like it. Welts and burns that covered every inch of exposed skin. People’s faces coated in gray paste, their eyes covered so they couldn’t see, their tongues thickened so they couldn’t talk. Some of them still screaming.

Passengers passed Lillani bottles of water. She rinsed out mouths, cleaned eyes and poured as much water on the burns as she could. The boat appeared to be filled with discarded gray rubber gloves. But they weren’t gloves, they were husks of skin that had peeled away from people’s bodies. Many were burned even under their clothes, and Lillani needed to cut them away.

As she poured water on some people’s burns, it only seemed to make them worse. So other passengers began handing her their clothes to make cold compresses, some of them stripping down to their bras and underpants.

Lillani talked to the injured, asked them questions about their vacations, trying to distract them and keep them conscious. She began singing her church songs. She stopped for a moment, embarrassed that she wasn’t much of singer. Somebody grabbed her leg: Please keep going.

The boat was flying, trying to make the hourlong trip back to shore as quickly as possible. Halfway back, the coast guard met them and two paramedics jumped aboard. They gave some of the injured medication, but others were so severely burned the paramedics couldn’t find their veins.

Many of the injured were asking about their loved ones. An elderly couple from Australia had become separated, the wife unable to move. So Lillani found the husband and led him by the hand back to her. He sat down and held her in his arms.

When they finally got back to shore, Lillani says all 23 of those she helped were still breathing. But she hasn’t had any contact with them since and doesn’t know if they all survived.

Thirty-nine people were taken from the island that day on Lillani’s boat and in helicopters. Five were already dead or died soon after. A sixth person who was being treated for burns at an Auckland hospital died on Tuesday night. Thirty others remain hospitalized, with 25 in critical condition. New Zealand’s burns units are working around the clock trying to keep those people alive, performing operations on them and skin grafts.

Lillani has just about finished her studies in geography and sociology at Waikato University and is looking forward to a career in teaching. She still loves volcanoes, she says, and being able to experience active ones is a privilege she hopes others will continue to be able to enjoy.

De zoektocht naar twee personen die vermist raakten bij de recente vulkaanuitbarsting in Nieuw-Zeeland, is gestopt. De autoriteiten gingen er al van uit dat het 17-jarige meisje uit Australië en de 40-jarige man uit Nieuw-Zeeland waren omgekomen bij de natuurramp.

Tiener Winona Langford en gids Hayden Marshall-Inman zijn de enigen van wie het lichaam niet is teruggevonden. Tijdens de uitbarsting waren er 47 mensen op het vulkanische eiland. Jaarlijks komen er zo'n duizend toeristen naar White Island.

Critici zeggen dat de autoriteiten er de afgelopen tijd geen toeristen hadden mogen toelaten. In de dagen voor de uitbarsting was er seismische activiteit gemeten, wat wijst op een mogelijke eruptie.

Jesse Langford heeft als enige van zijn gezin de vulkaanuitbarsting in Nieuw-Zeeland overleefd. Maar dat tragische nieuws heeft niemand hem tot nog toe kunnen vertellen want de 19-jarige Australische jongen ligt in coma. Zijn ouders Anthony (51) en Kristine (45) kwamen onmiddellijk om het leven tijdens het natuurgeweld. Het lichaam van zijn jongere zus Winona (17) is nog niet gevonden.

Jesse heeft op meer dan tachtig procent van zijn lichaam brandwonden. Hij is ondertussen overgevlogen naar een ziekenhuis in Sydney waar hij nog altijd in coma ligt. Daar heeft hij al bezoek gekregen van familieleden, zo weten Australische media. De student vecht voor zijn leven en als hij het haalt wacht hem verschrikkelijk nieuws.

Anthony (51) en Kristine (45) hebben de vulkaanuitbarsting niet overleefd. Het lichaam van zijn zus Winona is nog steeds niet gevonden. De zoektocht naar haar lichaam en dat van een Nieuw-Zeelandse gids duurt voort. Mogelijk bevinden de lichamen zich onder water voor de kust van het vulkanische eiland.

Slechte weersomstandigheden maken het moeilijk om de lichamen te bergen. Een helikopter moest vandaag onverwachts terugkeren naar de basis wegens hevige rukwinden. Ook gespecialiseerde duikers konden vooralsnog geen succes boeken.

Op het moment van de uitbarsting bevonden zich 47 mensen, onder wie 28 Australiërs, op het eiland. Ondertussen zijn de achttien dodelijke slachtoffers allemaal geïdentificeerd. Hiervan waren er 13 afkomstig uit Australië, drie uit Amerika maar wel woonachtig in Australië en twee anderen waren Nieuw-Zeelandse toeristische gidsen.

,,Het identificatieproces is nu afgelopen”, aldus de politie in een persbericht, op de identificatie van twee personen, de Australische Winona Langford en Nieuw-Zeelander Hayden Marshall-Inman na, van wie de lichamen nog steeds niet zijn teruggevonden.

Zeventien mensen bevinden zich nog op de intensive care in ziekenhuizen in Nieuw-Zeeland en Australië, waar ze worden verzorgd voor ernstige brandwonden.

De autoriteiten onderzoeken nu waarom reisagentschappen toeristen naar het eiland konden brengen, terwijl het dreigingsniveau voor een vulkaanuitbarsting enkele dagen daarvoor was verhoogd. Volgens premier Jacinda Ardern kan dat onderzoek tot wel een jaar duren.

Visual observations last week and on Monday, January 20 show lava has been extruded into the vents created by the December 9 eruption. In previous bulletins, GeoNet proposed that magma was at a very shallow level beneath the floor of the crater, and they now have visual confirmation that this magma has risen to the surface.

No significantly sustained or strong eruptive activity has been observed since the December 9 eruption, apart from minor ash emissions on December 23 and 26.

Airborne measurements of gas on January 20 show they are still at the high levels expected after an eruption, and the vent temperature remains very hot (> 400 °C / 752 °F).

"Considering these new observations, we have recalculated the expert judgment of eruption likelihood. It remains very unlikely (1% chance) that there will be another eruption in any 24-hour period during the next 4 weeks," GNS Science Duty Volcanologist Craig Miller noted.

"Although very unlikely, an explosive eruption from the active vent area remains possible and could occur with no precursory activity. This style of the eruption could be driven by the collapse of unstable material behind the vents, or by a marked decrease in gas emissions allowing water from the reforming crater lake or geothermal system to enter the active hot gas vents."

The number of casualties after the eruption on December 9th rose to 20 on January 13, after another person died at an Auckland hospital.

There were 47 people visiting the island when the volcano erupted, killing 13 people initially and leaving more than two dozen others hospitalized with severe burns. Many of the killed and injured were Australian tourists who had been traveling aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Ovation of the Seas.

Eenmaal bij bewustzijn moest de 48-jarige Lisa Dallow worden verteld dat haar man Gavin (53) en dochter Zoe (15). met wie ze op vakantie was, de ramp op White Island niet hebben overleefd.

"Het duurde een tijd voor ze het kon bevatten", zegt een woordvoerder van de familie tegen de Australische krant The Adelaide Advertiser. "Ze bleef zeggen dat ze niet kon geloven dat ze zijn overleden." Zelf is Dallow ernstig gewond, meer dan zestig procent van haar lichaam is verbrand. Zij verkeert niet meer in kritieke toestand.

De vrouw herinnert zich niet alles meer. "Ze weet nog dat de vulkaan uitbarstte en dat ze riep dat iedereen moest rennen. Ze voelde dat er stenen op haar rug vielen." Het laatste wat Dallow nog weet, is dat ze zich afvroeg wanneer er hulp zou komen.

De begrafenis van haar man was op 10 januari. Hij overleed in een helikopter nadat hij gewond van het eiland was gehaald. De begrafenis van de dochter, van wie het lichaam pas enkele dagen later werd gevonden, is uitgesteld totdat haar moeder uit haar coma zou ontwaken. Nu kan Dallow mee beslissen over de ceremonie. Ze is er nog te slecht aan toe om er zelf bij te zijn. De vrouw moet nog zeker een maand in het ziekenhuis blijven en daarna zes maanden herstellen.

Uitbarsting
De vulkaan van White Island, een toeristische attractie van Nieuw-Zeeland, barstte op 9 december uit, terwijl er 47 bezoekers op het eiland waren. 21 van hen overleefden het niet. Het onderzoek naar de ramp duurt waarschijnlijk een jaar.

Vlak na de uitbarsting stelden critici dat de autoriteiten toeristen nooit hadden mogen toelaten op het eiland, omdat de vulkaan in de dagen voor de uitbarsting al rommelde.
