Een nieuw, éénmalig toernooi vanwege het 100-jarig bestaan van de CONMEBOL. What’s not to like? Normaliter is de Copa América het Zuid-Amerikaanse equivalent van het Europees Kampioenschap, maar dit jaar wordt het in een ander jasje gestoken, vanwege de eerder genoemde reden.
Voor het eerst zal de Copa plaatsvinden buiten Zuid-Amerika, namelijk in de Verenigde Staten. Op 3 juni trapt het gastland af tegen Colombia (adelantos cafeteros).
De wedstrijden zullen gespeeld worden in tien verschillende staten. East Rutherford (New Jersey), Orlando (Florida), Seattle (Washington), Pasadena (California), Santa Clara (California), Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Houston (Texas), Glendale (Arizona), Foxborough (Massachusetts) en Chicago (Illinois).
Niet alleen de landen van de CONMEBOL doen mee, ook de CONCACAF (de bond van Midden- en Noord-Amerika) levert diverse teams af. Uiteindelijk zullen de volgende zestien landen spelen voor de hoofdprijs.
