Hey there,

How long did it take for you to learn English?

And where did you learn it?

I learned a lot from games and movies, but learned a lot in school too.
I probably took 4 serious years of learning, which made me an okay speaker.

How about you guys? :)
#ANONIEMzaterdag 2 januari 2016 @ 23:39
T.V. and books mostly, didn't take me any effort at all. Grade-and middle-school English was a walk through the park. :)

I spoke a fair amount of English on a daily base for about 5 years. My writing is terrible but when I speak I mostly get confused for someone from 'somewhere in GB' even by the brits. Whereabouts they cant tell me.

It took 5 minutes of watching the lad. And then I understood, he was just a bloody insurance salesman. After that I regret deeply the 5 minutes of learning to know the English guy. Now I am best friend with a bloke, called Ireland.

It all started with Runescape in 2005, then other games, the internet and movies with ondertiteling, movies with English subtitles and then movies without subtitles and then school for the hard grammar and some extra practice.

Games, movies, series, music, computers, programming, site owner, reading English books since i was a child, long holidays far abroad, English magazines, English spoken household (due to Swedish wife), and living outside Holland. Only Dutch i experience is actually Fok! and some other Dutchies that are in my neighbourhood.

I think that over the last years 95% (if not more) of my thoughts even are in English. If it would be up to me Fok! would change fully into an English site. Would also mean we get rid of a bunch of the current trolls.

I tend to believe that when it comes to writing my English is better than my Dutch writing as for spelling errors :P

Started when I was 10 in secondary school, then in grammar school of course, and ended up doing a BA in English Language and Literature.

Have been living in the UK for 4.5 years now, and have been told to have a proper Barnsley accent of which I'm very proud :P
EricOscurozondag 3 januari 2016 @ 00:57
I think I'm still learning. Can you ever stop learning?

For example Southpark or streetlanguage (by hiphop). We are never done learning.

I think I am rather well in English and still make a lot of mistakes.
At school I had al lot of English, but not until the "mavo." Than the meao, and it continued on the heao, but only till the second year.

Of course the were movies, but music lyrics were very important for me. That was the most important source for speaking in normal conversations ( as in non- business language like V.A.T.- vallue added taxes - and that kind of business/ tax language).

Still, I think we do not have to be ashamed for not speaking or writing fluently English. As long as they understand what we are talking about, and as they don't speak Dutch. .
We often speak 3 languages, the avarage Englishman speaks two languages at most. ;)

Started to learn English in secondary school at the age of 12. But the formal education didn't teach me much... In retrospect the only thing we were doing was grammar drills and vocabulary for 5 years straight lol and since I didn't do any homework or pay attention to the classes, I managed to do poorly on those things as well. Listening exams saved me from failing English, though, so I guess it evens out.

I kinda grew up with English, my father used to work with a lot of people from England who often came over to stay at our house.
But that was only talking, in writing only what I learned at school.
The last 3,5 years I have been talking English every single day, seeing by husband is Icelandic and I don't speak Icelandic.
Also because I live in Denmark and my Danish is not sufficient enough yet to always explain myself in Danish.
So my English has improved over the last years, but only in speaking, my writing is still not what it should be.

From what I hear i do not have a severe Dutch accent, and I'm happy about that. ;)

About 3 years before I passed my CPE exam, counting from the first real class in English. Of course I knew some English before I went to high school.

Unfortunately, not practising on a regular basis has made me forget a lot.
Scuidwarddonderdag 7 januari 2016 @ 16:03
Mediocre during high school.
Acceptable at university.

Perfect is something I do not aim for neither will it be easy, as I got a strong Dutch accent which one of my stupid roommates tends to find funny ... however at one point we had a new Australian roommate who visited us before we chose him, and I managed to make a joke not everybody understood within 5 minutes, so maybe I do better than I think.

As a kid I watched Tom and Jerry with subtitles. Watching English comedy on Belgian television, such as 'Dad's Army' and 'Are You Being Served?' was a favorite pastime. As time went on, I frequently turned off the translative subtitles in English media.

I stopped speaking "English" when I started to say "y'all" in half of my sentences. Living for 11 years in 'the south' makes you do that.
Vincentoozaterdag 9 januari 2016 @ 23:49
Started at the age of 12. But I was never really good in it. Last year I did an internship in an English speaking country and I think I learned more in that half year than in all the years before.

I hardly know any Greek at all, but there's more languages that i know nothing about, but that do have some nice sentences to use in daily life and i have somehow managed to collect a stack of those in my brain.

This was one of them :)

And i for sure have no plans to learn Greek, I'm Dutch and run an English household in an Swiss/German area in a country where almost half the people speak French. Enough is enough.

I still know the alphabet of course, and how to pronounce most of it, even the differences in modern Greek, so it's nice to be able to make sense of things such as road signs when driving there (still on the to do list :') ) But other than that, I just enjoyed it, as I did with learning Latin. But then again, I'm a language / literature lover ;)

How many languages do you know yourself?

I never was a language lover, but being sorta forced into it did made me appreciate different languages more.

Dutch and English are fluent and native/near-native.

German is OK-ish, same as French. Have to get that back up to an acceptable level too. Once I'm in Germany/France for a couple of days things go quite well, but it's not 'brilliant', it's 'I can explain who I am, where I'm from and what I'm doing' :P .

Still want to learn Spanish, Mandarin, and Russian. O+

I have the same with German and i would love to learn French! And also better Icelandic, i can understand and read it a bit but i can't talk it.
I used babbel.com for Danish, i will probably use it more often in the future for other languages.

You start to learn English in primary school. That's why Dutch people are the best in English of whole Europe.
