Iraqi Soldier Killed, Two Militia Wounded in Fighting

The Iraqi military has raided the Baghdad headquarters of the Shi’ite militia Kataib Hezbollah, a significant faction involved in the war against ISIS, after intelligence suggested they may have been behind this week’s kidnapping of 18 Turks in the Shi’ite district of Sadr City.
Troops were investigating a lead at a house in Mohandessen District when they came under fire from within. An Iraqi soldier was killed and two of the militia were wounded in the incident, which led to a move against the headquarters.
If true, this would be hugely complicating to the war on ISIS, as Kataib Hezbollah is a major ally on that front. Karim al-Nouri, the Iraqi government’s coordinator for working with those militias, insisted that the search “proved” that the group wasn’t behind it.
It is curious that the Wednesday kidnapping is still without official culprits. It was assumed that the kidnappers, whoever they might be, would follow the usual policy of seeking ransom from the Turkish company the men worked for, but so far that hasn’t happened, at least not publicly. Though the initial suspicion in all such incidents is ISIS, that the incident occurred in a heavily Shi’ite part of the capital raised a lot of suspicion that one of the militias was looking for a pay-day by taking the workers.

quote:‘We are seeking bigger role for Russia than Americans’ - Iraq defense committee chairmanBaghdad, Russia’s ally in its fight against ISIS, wants Russia to have a bigger role in the anti-terrorist campaign in Iraq than the US and may soon officially request to start airstrikes on its soil, the chairman of Iraqi parliament’s defense committee said.
"We might be forced to ask Russia to launch airstrikes in Iraq soon. I think in the upcoming few days or weeks Iraq will be forced to ask Russia to launch airstrikes and that depends on their success in Syria," said Hakim al-Zamili, Reuters reported.
"We are seeking to see Russia having a bigger role in Iraq... Yes, definitely a bigger role than the Americans," Zamili said.
The Iraqi official told RIA Novosti that the decision would depend on how efficient the Russian campaign in Syria proved to be.
According to Zamili, the center’s role may be expanded to coordinate Russia’s future airstrikes in Iraq.
Russia last week started carrying out airstrikes in Syria against the positions of Islamic State, a terrorist group originating in Iraq, which also grew a power base in neighboring Syria and launched a surprise offensive in Iraq, taking control of large parts of both countries.
Iraq is supporting the campaign by sharing intelligence with Russia through a communication center in Baghdad. Iran and Syria are also part of the center.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi told France 24 on Tuesday that his government would welcome Russian warplanes in Iraq.
Valentina Matvienko, the speaker for the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, which has the constitutional authority to green-light military operations in foreign countries, said that Russia may consider such a request.
Russia and the US are trying to settle their differences in stance on Syria by establishing intelligence exchanges that would prevent potential incidents in Syrian airspace. Moscow has also invited Washington to share its intelligence on ISIS targets, saying it would benefit the Russian effort.
The Iraqi government, which has been a close ally of the US since its occupation by American troops in 2003, is part of the US-led anti-ISIS coalition. The US provides weapons, training and intelligence to the Iraqi troops fighting against ISIS militants, although so far the Iraqi army has failed to stop the jihadists from expanding their territory.

quote:Around Ramadi, which IS seized in mid-May, Iraqi forces pressed an offensive to retake it, with air support from the coalition.
According to daily tallies provided by the US military, coalition warplanes have carried out at least 69 strikes against IS in the Ramadi area this month alone.
Major ground advances in recent days have allowed pro-government forces to almost completely encircle Ramadi, where the coalition estimates the number of remaining IS fighters to be between 600 and 1,000.
"We're encouraged by this progress, but much fighting lies ahead. Important for Iraq forces to keep moving forward," US military spokesman Patrick Ryder said on social media.
Iraqi forces were also tightening the noose around IS in the town of Baghdadi, further west up the Euphrates River in Anbar province.
Army Major General Ali Dabbun said his forces, with backing from local Sunni tribal fighters opposed to IS, had made good progress in Baghdadi.
"Our forces defused 62 IEDs (improvised explosive devices), blew up three rigged buildings, causing no victims," he said, claiming that many IS fighters had been killed in the latest fighting.
