Vulkaan Calbuco in Chili uitgebarsten

Some 5000 people had to be evacuated on Wednesday evening, after a volcano in Chile that had been dormant for 50 years suddenly erupted twice in the space of a few hours.

A third eruption was likely over the next couple of hours.

A state of emergency was declared after the first eruption from Calbuco in southern Chile yesterday evening, as thick ash spewed some 10km into the sky. As a result, airlines cancelled flights and schools suspended classes.

Neighbouring Argentine also put into place emergency measures, with Bariloche city expected to be clouded with ash within hours. The city is about 100km from the volcano.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said she would travel to the affected area on Thursday together with several ministers.

“The ash might damage crops, animal feed, bridges, roads, people’s work routines, tourism and especially their health,” she said.

En intussen wordt het gelukkig weer lichter, was kennelijk de wolk van de nieuwe uitbarsting van vanochtend. Wel heel bizar, was echt compleet nacht, beangstigend.
