Nigalidze viel door de mand tijdens een wedstrijd tegen de Armeense grootmeester Tigran Petrosian, in de zesde ronde van het toernooi. Zijn tegenspeler rook onraad toen de Georgiër bij elke beurt dringend naar het toilet moest, waarbij hij telkens hetzelfde hokje opzocht.
Petrosian informeerde de scheidsrechter over zijn verdenkingen, die Nigalidze vervolgens extra in het oog hield. Toen deze opnieuw uit de wc kwam, onderzocht de arbiter het verdachte hokje en trof achter de pot een in wc-papier gewikkelde smartphone aan.
