The jihadists of Islamic State enraged many when they filmed themselves destroying Iraq’s ancient treasures but the head of the country’s national antiquities department confirmed they were plaster copies of priceless originals.

“None of the artefacts destroyed in the video is an original,” Fawzye al-Mahdi told the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

Curators at the Baghdad Museum studied the video and found that many of the artefacts that appeared to have been destroyed were in fact safe inside their own museum.
They also found that others are held in museums around the world.

The world looked on in horror last month when Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) released a video showing jihadists taking hammers to what appeared to be irreplaceable ancient statues and artefacts.

“These statues and idols ... became worthless to us even if they are worth billions of dollars,” an Isil member boasted in the video.

The findings confirmed suspicions voiced by archaeologists when the video was first released.
“You can see iron bars inside [the statues],” Mark Altaweel of the Institute of Archaeology at University College, London, told Channel 4 News.

“The originals don’t have iron bars.”

Atheel Nuafi, the governor of Mosul who had to flee the city when Isil seized control of it last year, confirmed that most of the destroyed objects were copies, though he said two were originals.
“There were two items that were real and which the militants destroyed,” he told Iraqi television. “One is a winged bull and the other was the God of Rozhan.” Isil is also feared to have caused irreparable damage when it bulldozed the ancient sites of Nimrud and Hatra.

It is feared the jihadists may have also stolen smaller objects from Mosul Museum and sold them, after seven pieces from the museum’s collection turned up in Germany.

While in public it destroys ancient artefacts, Isil is believed to profit from selling looted treasures on the black market.

Many of Iraq’s greatest treasures were removed by European archaeologists in the 20th century, including Babylon’s spectacular Ishtar Gate, which is housed in Berlin’s Pergamon Museum.
But Iraq is one country that is not demanding the return of such artefacts.

“We should be glad that the most important relics of our past are well-protected in foreign museums when considering the barbarism we are currently experiencing,” Ms al-Mahdi told Deutsche Welle.

Fighting intensified to the north and south of Saddam’s hometown on Sunday as Iraqi security forces vowed to reach the centre of Tikrit within 48 hours. All that was left of Hussein’s once-lavish tomb were the support columns that held up the roof.

Poster-sized pictures of Saddam, which once covered the mausoleum, were nowhere to be seen amid the mountains of concrete rubble. Instead, Shia militia flags and photographs of militia leaders marked the predominantly Sunni village, including that of Major General Qassem Soleimani, the powerful Iranian general advising Iraqi Shia militias on the battlefield.

“This is one of the areas where IS militants massed the most because Saddam’s grave is here,” said Captain Yasser Nu’ma, an official with the Shia militias, formerly known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces. He said the Isis militants set a trap by planting bombs around the tomb.

Isis has controlled Tikrit since June, when it waged its lightning offensive that saw Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul, come under their control. The militants were helped in their conquest of northern Iraq by Saddam loyalists, including military veterans, who appealed to Sunnis who felt victimised by Baghdad’s Shia-dominated government.

Isis claimed in August that Saddam’s tomb had been completely destroyed, but local officials said it was just ransacked and burned, but suffered only minor damage.

Saddam was captured by US forces in 2003 and was executed by hanging in December 2006 after an Iraqi special tribunal found him guilty of crimes against humanity for the mass killing of Shias and Kurds. His body has been kept in the mausoleum in his birthplace, Ouja, since 2007. The complex featured a marble octagon at the center of which a bed of fresh flowers covered the place where his body was buried. The extravagant chandelier at its centre was reminiscent of the extravagant life he led until US forces toppled him in 2003.
