De PlayStation 4 (PS4) is een spelcomputer van Sony Computer Entertainment die in Europa sinds 29 november 2013 verkrijgbaar is. De opvolger van de PlayStation 3 is op 20 februari 2013 aangekondigd tijdens een persconferentie, die volledig in het teken stond van de nieuwe console, te New York.De PlayStation 4 maakt deel uit van de achtste generatie in de geschiedenis van de spelcomputer.

Sony doet afstand van de Cell-architectuur, in plaats daarvan hebben ze gekozen voor de x86-architectuur.Dit is een breed platform dat regelmatig wordt gebruikt in moderne pc's. De reden voor deze keuze is omdat het voor ontwikkelaars op deze manier veel makkelijker wordt om spellen te maken. Hierdoor kan een grotere groep van ontwikkelaars de stap nemen om PS4-spellen te gaan ontwikkelen, zowel kleine als grote bedrijven. Deze veranderingen zijn tot stand gekomen door de lessen die Sony heeft geleerd tijdens de ontwikkeling, productie en lancering van de PS3. Andere noemenswaardige hardware zijn een snellere blu-rayspeler en 8 GB GDDR5-geheugen.

Online gamen met de PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita en PlayStation Portable is gratis. Wel kan de gebruiker kiezen voor een betalende lidmaatschap genaamd PlayStation Plus. Hij krijgt hierdoor korting op bepaalde spellen, kan bepaalde spellen voor de aankoop een uur gratis uitproberen en heeft toegang tot de Instant Game Collection, waarbij de gebruiker elke maand een aantal spellen gratis kan downloaden voor zowel de PS3, PS4 en PS Vita. PlayStation Plus kan momenteel per maand, per 3 maanden of per jaar worden aangeschaft.

Alleen op de PlayStation 4 die op 29 november 2013 in Europa is verschenen, moet de gebruiker het betalende PlayStation Plus abonnement hebben om gebruik te kunnen maken van PlayStation Network.

PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection (IGC)
De Instant Game Collection is een bibliotheek met PS4™-, PS3™- en PS Vita-games die je voor de duur van je PlayStation®Plus-lidmaatschap zonder bijkomende kosten kunt downloaden en spelen*. Elke maand wordt er een selectie van games toegevoegd aan de IGC - sommige zijn slechts één maand beschikbaar, terwijl andere langer deel uitmaken van de IGC.
