Here, from Louis van Gaal, came a demonstration of what a good international manager can achieve at a World Cup.
He can take a midfielder from Norwich City and turn him into a match-winner, as he did Leroy Fer only two minutes after sending him on from the bench.
And he can take a defence that was simply diabolical against Australia, despite winning the game, and reorganise them well enough to withstand the considerable pressure imposed by this marvellous Chile team.

True, a South American side that has dazzled at the this tournament did not play with quite their usual intensity in the knowledge that, like their opponents, they were already through.
It was simply a case of trying to win the group in the hope that it would probably mean avoiding Brazil in the last 16. But then you wonder if Chile want to play Brazil and play on the fact that Luiz Felipe Scolari has already identified Jorge Sampaoli’s team as one he would prefer to avoid.
Even so, Van Gaal responded to one bad defensively display in a way that Roy Hodgson did not, even though the warning signs were there against Italy.
In many ways these two teams are a real indictment of England. Chile progress to the last 16 using players from Wigan, Nottingham Forest and Cardiff, somehow organising them to play a brand of football superior to that that they play with their clubs. How can that be if it not down to the manager?
And let’s not forget the talent pools from which these two countries find their footballers; populations of little more than 17million.

In the end Chile were given a bit of a lesson of by the Dutch, succumbing to Holland’s counter attacking football with a second goal arriving in second half stoppage time from Memphis Depay.
With Robin Van Persie suspended - and therefore no Van in the Dutch team for the first time since 1996 – Van Gaal was forced to make changes that included the curious selection of Dirk Kuyt as a full-back. But it worked.
It also meant a start for Jeremain Lens alongside Arjen Robben in attack, and it’s fair to say in their captain’s absence the Dutch certainly lacked their usual verve to begin with.
That said, Chile weren’t too hot either, their forwards struggling to make any real impact against a well-organised Dutch defence. Having lacked discipline at times against Australia, it was clear Van Gaal had demanded higher levels of concentration for this encounter.
If they wanted to win this group to avoid the hosts – assuming, that is, that Brazil topped Group A – the onus was on Chile to attack with the Dutch sitting on at the summit with the superior goal difference.
They were displaying more ambition than their opponents. Playing some nice, neat football too. But not until the 23rd minute did Sampaoli’s side even threaten, Felipe Gutierrez meeting a corner from the inventive Alexis Sanchez with a first-time shot that flew over the crossbar.
At the opposite end Wesley Sneijder would test Claudio Bravo with a free-kick but the Dutch seemed content to defend with a high line and absorb what pressure was being applied by a fluid Chile team enjoying almost 70 per cent of the ball.
If Holland were going to score here at the Arena de Sao Paulo, it was going to be on the counter attack. Robben burst clear only to misplace a pass intended for Nigel De Jong, while Stefan De Vrij perhaps should have done better in meeting a Robben free-kick. As it was, his close-range header flew wide.

The Dutch defence was beginning to creak a little as Chile’s attacking intensified. Daley Blind was certainly living dangerously when he tackled Charles Aranguiz from behind in the penalty area - he just about won the ball – and there was a further appeal for a penalty when Sanchez collapsed under what looked like the lightest of challenges from Kuyt. The former Liverpool striker certainly wasn’t impressed with the Barcelona forward.
As this contest progressed towards the interval it did begin to ignite. Robben exploded into life with a trademark run from inside his own half only to send his diagonal shot beyond the far post. Little more than a minute later and Gutierrez threatened again.
What momentum was building towards the break seemed to disappear after it, with Van Gaal becoming increasingly animated as a result. At one stage Kuyt certainly got an earful.
Chile continued to press, with Blind collecting a booking to stop Sanchez. The Dutch defence was stretched at times but holding firm.
In the end Van Gaal’s substitutions proved decisive, both goals coming from players he dispatched from the bench.
Fer struck first in the 77th minute, meeting Daryl Janmaat’s marvellous cross with a thumping header.
The second arrived 15 minutes later, the Dutch breaking from a Chile corner with Robben bursting down the left flank and delivering a cross Depay converted at close-range. In fairness the scorer of Holland’s winning goal did well to hold off the challenge of Marcelo Diaz.
In the end a very satisfying afternoon’s work for the next Manchester United manager.

Neither is it new for Van Gaal to turn questions back on the questioner so when one reporter had the temerity to ask why Holland had been defensive, he quickly snapped: Could you give a definition of attacking football? Van Gaal said. That is my question to you. Fair play to him, though, in engaging. To an extent.
It even became a little surreal. When man of the match and a candidate for man of the tournament so far Arjen Robben was asked about Van Gaals substitutes two of his substitutes scored the goals the forward responded: Louis van Gaal has a golden willie. Maybe he does have the Midas touch (although that might not be the right segue).

In any case this was one for the statisticians and pub quiz aficionados also. It was the first time in 18 years and 221 matches that Holland did not have a player with Van in his name in their team as a result of the one-match suspension being served by their captain Robin van Persie. But Van Gaal was the Van who mattered (along with Robben).
In Van Persies absence, Robben took the armband and took the game by the scruff of the neck. Even at 30 his pace is still searing. If anything he appears to getting quicker. He almost scored the goal of the tournament as, in the first half, he shrugged off Gonzalo Jaras cynical attempts to bring him down on halfway and seared his way towards the Chilean goal, slaloming challenges before sliding a low shot narrowly wide.
Van Gaal argued against it but he certainly appeared to have set his team up to cede possession. In that first half they completed just 60 passes with Chiles Gary Medel alone completing 62. While Van Gaal railed against the penalties the Dutch had awarded against them against Spain and Australia, this time it was Sampaoli who felt aggrieved.
Even so referee Bakary Gassama, from Gambia, was right in ignoring claims that Charles Aránguiz had been brought down inside the penalty area by Daley Blind, although the Dutch defender was rash and it could have been given. However, Dirk Kuyt was fortunate not to be punished for a nudge on the excellent Alexis Sánchez as he ran to meet a cross and then, late on, Stefan de Vrij escaped for an apparent handball on the goal-line.
Chile had to win the group and they certainly attempted to achieve that with Sampaoli withdrawing a defender and throwing on another striker which meant space opened up. Van Gaal as all good coaches do responded and it paid dividends.
On came Leroy Fer and the Norwich City midfielder powered in a header from close range after a corner was cut back to Daryl Janmaat to cross. That corner was earned by another substitute, the tricky, skilful Memphis Depay with a run and fierce shot that had been pushed over by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
As Chile frantically pressed, the Dutch struck again deep in injury time with a classic counter, Robben haring down the left, looking up and crossing for Depay to force the ball home.
Chile were beaten. For once the Chi-Chi-Chi could not Cha-Cha-Cha the way they have done during this World Cup.
Van Gaal called a different tune. I want to score one goal more than the opponent, he said dismissively. He got two.

It is a sign of the way the winger has matured that, at the age of 30, captaincy suited him during the victory over Chile

The expression on Arjen Robben’s face as he led his country out on to the pitch, navy armband wound around his left biceps, suggested this was not a moment he would take lightly. Captain of Holland at a World Cup finals: he looked like a footballer on top of his game and utterly fulfilled. He gave the impression that this was a sporting experience he never imagined possible.

In fairness, electric wingers – who by their very nature play with speed and guile and a maverick spirit that does not tally with the traditional qualities required for the leader of a team’s strategy and spirit – tend not to make authentic captains. Before this, Robben had one opportunity to start with the armband before, for a friendly against Japan when Robin van Persie was injured. A handful of times he has taken over during a game when the first choice has been substituted.

As a young player, Robben did not appear to be captaincy material at all. But it is a sign of the way he has matured that at the age of 30, it suited him. He is playing with a mixture of verve, confidence and concentration that makes him, arguably, the standout player in the tournament so far. There is no denying he is one of the contenders, anyway.

Selecting Van Persie – suspended on Monday – as captain with Robben as his deputy was a brave and intriguing selection by Louis van Gaal. Both players have responded brilliantly to the enhanced sense of responsibility.

As Van Gaal sought to repair the damage done two years ago in the European Championship, when the Dutch flopped by losing all three matches, he called a meeting where everyone in the squad was encouraged to speak their mind. In the summer of 2013 he decided to change the leadership in the camp, replacing the then captain, Wesley Sneijder, and his understudy, Dirk Kuyt, with the new double act of Van Persie and Robben. The move was based on a fundamental principle – Van Gaal insists his captains must be guaranteed regulars, something he could not promise Sneijder and Kuyt at the time.

Fitness or suspensions permitting, there is no way Van Gaal would pick a team without his high-calibre attacking double act. This Holland vintage are defined by the stellar performances of Van Persie and Robben, although it speaks volumes that the younger and less experienced players around them are rising to the occasion too. Here Leroy Fer powered in a header to give Holland the lead, before Memphis Depay was invited to add another goal created by one of a handful of blazing Robben runs that seemed fast enough to leave scorched shapes of footprints in the grass.

Robben’s public image may be coloured by the fact he developed a reputation for exaggerating falls but those who know him speak of a level-headed player who looks after himself and these days wants to make an impression looking after others too. He used to be thought of as something of a loner but now relishes the fact he can influence the players around him. Since being named Van Gaal’s chosen vice-captain, he has made a special effort on that front.

Away from football, Robben married his childhood sweetheart and is heavily involved in supporting the local community where he grew up. He supports a project to encourage people to read more (he even features in a couple of the stories), and is an ambassador for his boyhood club, Groningen.

Robben is relishing this World Cup. At that faltering European Championship two years ago, the body language evoked nothing but frustration as Robben was substituted during a game against Germany and hopped over the advertising hoardings on the far side of the pitch – opposite the dugouts – for a long and sulky walk round. “If you want to accomplish something together, you have to put egos aside,” he said later. “You have to fight as a team to regain that sense of invincibility. It won’t come by itself.”

The egos seem remarkably well blended for the common cause under Van Gaal. Robben celebrated victory over Chile, with the prize of probably avoiding Brazil in the last 16, emphatically. They have topped Group B comprehensively. Having delighted against Spain, prevailed through moments of class against Australia, and earned a more tactical victory against Chile, Holland have demonstrated versatility as well as talent and togetherness.

Robben and Van Persie, the creative leaders, will be back in tandem for the knockouts. Right now the team they are leading from the front do not look to be afraid of anyone.
