France captain Thierry Dusautoir is out of the Six Nations after tearing a tendon in his right biceps in Toulouse's 16-6 Heineken Cup victory over Italian club Zebre on Saturday.
Dusautoir, who has 65 caps and was voted world player of the year in 2011, is expected to be out for four months.
The 32-year-old flanker, who will have surgery on Tuesday or Wednesday, will also miss the Heineken Cup quarters. France open their 2014 campaign at home to England on Saturday, 1 February.
France coach Philippe Saint-Andre will name a replacement in his squad on Sunday.
Virgile Bruni of Toulon, Castres Olympique's Antonie Claassen and Alexandre Lapandry of Clermont Auvergne are in contention for the place.
quote:Ospreys and Wales lock Ian Evans faces an anxious wait to see what his Six Nations availability will be like after he was cited for a red card for stamping in Friday's Heineken Cup clash against Leinster in Dublin. Leinster won the game 36-3.
Evans has been a key player for Wales in recent times but will likely miss out on at least the first two of their Championship matches after Romain Poite red carded him for stamping on the face of Leinster lock Mike McCarthy, who left the field with blood pouring from his head.
Ospreys backs coach Gruff Rees admitted it might have been reckless, but said that even after multiple TV replays, Evans alleged stamping wasn't clear and obvious.
"It was a big moment, but I'm not sure about it to be honest, like a lot of observers, I think. Perhaps it was a bit reckless, but there were a lot of replays needed to make a decision, which suggests it wasn't that clear and obvious.
"It took five or six times in slow-mo to isolate the incident. I don't know if that's clear and obvious from a red card point of view, and it changes the game.
"You have to be absolutely certain with a red card, and that there were so many replays and there are still so many differing opinions on it suggests that the clips may not have been totally conclusive," he added.

www.espnscrum.comquote:Stuart Lancaster has dropped Chris Ashton in favour of uncapped Exeter wing Jack Nowell for England's Six Nations opener against France in Paris on Saturday.
With his defensive capabilities called into question in recent years in an England jersey, time has finally run out for the Saracens wing who has failed to make the squad of 23 announced on Tuesday evening. Ashton endured a tough autumn campaign and only retained his spot in the squad due to injuries to Marland Yarde and Christian Wade.
Ashton's England career began in exciting fashion, scoring a memorable length-of-the-field try against Australia in only his fifth cap. After scoring six tries in the opening two games of the 2011 Six Nations his international career looked bright but his form for England has stagnated since.
His replacement, the 20-year-old Nowell, is enjoying a growing reputation in the game after some inspired performances both domestically and in Europe, most notably in against Toulon in the Heineken Cup, and it looks like he has done enough to earn himself a start in Paris. Ashton will make way in his place, with Gloucester's Jonny May likely to add to his one England cap on the other wing.
Scrum-half Ben Youngs, who played for the British and Irish Lions last year, has also been left out in favour of Danny Care and Lee Dickson.
There are three other uncapped players - Luther Burrell, George Ford and Anthony Watson.
Forwards: David Attwood (Bath Rugby), Dan Cole (Leicester Tigers), Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints), Joe Launchbury (London Wasps), Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints), Joe Marler (Harlequins), Ben Morgan (Gloucester Rugby), Matt Mullan (London Wasps), Chris Robshaw (Harlequins), Henry Thomas (Sale Sharks), Billy Vunipola (Saracens), Mako Vunipola (Saracens), Tom Wood (Northampton Saints), Tom Youngs (Leicester Tigers). Backs: Brad Barritt (Saracens), Mike Brown (Harlequins), Luther Burrell (Northampton Saints), Danny Care (Harlequins), Lee Dickson (Northampton Saints), Owen Farrell (Saracens), George Ford (Bath Rugby), Alex Goode (Saracens), Jonny May (Gloucester Rugby), Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs), Billy Twelvetrees (Gloucester Rugby), Anthony Watson (Bath Rugby).
Ik hoop dat Italië de successen van vorig jaar (winst op Ierland en Frankrijk) kan evenaren. Altijd een goede sfeer in het Stadio Olimpico.quote:
