The SidStation is a MIDI-controlled synthesizer with real-time controllers. Many synthesizers built today are made to fit a current trend to a specific market. SidStation is not one of them. It is built with love and dedication, and capable of producing really unique sounds that can not be recreated on any other instrument. We think SidStation appeals to all creative musicians who seek for interesting sound sources that allows them to express themselves and distinguish their music.
The heart of the SidStation is the sound generating chip from the classic home computer Commodore 64. This sound-chip, the MOS6581 SID (SID for Sound Interface Device) was developed in the early eighties by Bob Yannes at MOS technology. It's a very unique-sounding marriage of analogue and digital techniques. However, the trend in sound synthesis soon changed towards sampling technology, and nothing like it has been produced ever since. The rediscovery of the SID-sound is a pleasant surprise for all sound explorers looking for something more exiting than the current crop of analogue imitating 'virtual' synthesizers.
It takes certain programming techniques to get the most out of the MOS6581. More than 20,000 lines of assembly code takes the SID-chip from being a quirky piece of silicon, to become a friendly music instrument. The SID-chip is basicly just a tone generator (with a special sound), and the SidStation OS realises all features like LFO's, wave/note-tables, arpeggiators and filter envelope. Thousands of young hackers of the C64 has devoted years of their lives exploring all possibilities of the MOS6581. In the development of the SidStation, inspiration and experience has been gathered both from this hacker scene as well as traditional synthesizers.
The possible production of SidStation synthesizers is limited. Production of SID-chips has stopped since long, and we have searched all over the world for remaining stock. We will stop the production of SidStation as the stock we've managed to secure is at an end. The price of the SidStation will also be increased as the stock dries out. If you want to be in possession of a SidStation - don't wait.
Het leuke is dus dat je nu gewoon al die oldskool Nintendo en Commodore 64 gewoon je huiskamer kunt binnenhalen! Ik zit eraan te denken om zo'n ding te kopen alleen het leuke is ze zijn behoorlijk prijzig.. zo'n 740 euro ofzo.. 
Aangezien ik net een nieuwe bas heb aangeschaft is dat behoorlijk klote. Maar het vervelende is dat je nu niet weet of er nu echt een bepaald limiet is van die Commodore chips of dat het alleen een marketing stunt is. Want volgens de website [www.sidstation.com] word de sidstation alleen nog maar duurder. De teller staat nu namelijk nog maar op 198 chips en ik zou toch niet graag zo'n kick ding willen mislopen.
Heeft een van de Fok!kers zo'n Sidstation en zoja hoe bevalt dat dan?
De SID station is een verdere ontwikkeling van de HardSID kaart (ISA kaartje met 1 t/m 4 SID chips). Op zich zijn er hele leuke geluiden mee te maken, al vraag ik me af of je dergelijke sound ook niet gewoon uit een andere bak kunt halen. Een SID chip is absoluut geen wonder op synthesizergebied. Met DSP's moet een dergelijke geluidschip met gemak kunnen worden nagemaakt.
Dat de prijzen omhoog gaan... ja, logisch...De C64 wordt niet meer gemaakt en onderdelen worden ook steeds schaarser. Vandaar dat de prijs ook steeds verder wordt opgedreven. Wat je het beste kunt doen bij aanschaf van een SID staton is vooraf eerst een paar oude C64 computers van de rommelmarkt halen, daar de SID's uithalen en die in de SID station proppen. Dat scheelt je echt een hoop geld.
Het vervelende is dat ik zelf bijna geen enkele technische kennis bezit. Ik heb dan ook geen flauw idee hoe je zo'n ding erin zet... Hoeveel zou dat eigenlijk besparen denk je als je het zelf zou doen?
Ga niet naar van die winkels die gespecialiseerd zijn in de in- en verkoop van oude computers en consoles, want die zijn echt veel te duur. Misschien is een computerbeurs ook wel wat, maar je hebt ook van die mensen die die dingen verzamelen, dus daar ligt de prijs misschien wat hoger.
Ik had er echt nooit een idee van dat die computers nu zo duur zouden zijn.

Je hebt er handelaars bij die denken dat een C64 nog net zoveel opbrengt als 15 jaar geleden (zag laatst nog een C64 met FDD en spellen voor 300 EURO(!!!
) te koop staan. Dergelijke lui moet je natuurlijk ontwijken.Als je iemand in je omgeving hebt die een beetje handig is met elektronica, dan kan diegene de IC's wel uit het voetje wippen en ze in de SID station plaatsen.
