De Engelse oud-international Paul Gascoigne verkeert weer in levensgevaar. Dat zeggen enkele vrienden en familieleden van de 46-jarige Brit naar aanleiding van nieuwe incidenten vanwege alcoholmisbruik
Gascoigne, die zich op loopkrukken verplaatste, zakte maandag op de stoep van een hotel in Londen dronken ineen. Hij had twee flessen drank in zijn broekzak zitten. Met een ambulance werd 'Gazza' afgevoerd naar een ziekenhuis.
Gascoigne onderging vorige maand een heupoperatie. Sindsdien was hij volgens waarnemers weer aan de drank. Vorige week werd hij gearresteerd door de politie nadat hij in een dronken driftbui zijn ex-vrouw Sheryl op een treinstation had aangevallen.
Volgens zijn vriend Ronnie Irani, oud-cricketer van Engeland, gaat het weer heel slecht met Gascoigne. De oud-voetballer onderging eerder dit jaar in de Verenigde Staten, op kosten van onder anderen Irani, een afkickprogramma. Het ging daarna een tijdje redelijk goed met hem.
'We geven hem niet op. Er overlijden dagelijks mensen aan alcoholverslaving. We hopen dat Paul het redt. Maar hij heeft serieuze mentale problemen. Het zal heel zwaar voor hem worden', liet een bezorgde Irani weten

Troubled Paul Gascoigne was rushed to hospital on Monday night shortly after stumbling into a London hotel with two gin bottles in his pockets.
The Sun report that the 46-year-old was 'extremely drunk' as he knocked over several plant pots while staggering into the Royal National Hotel. Onlookers then saw the former England star collapse to the ground after breaking down in tears and asking people for more alcohol and his ex-wife Sheryl.
Both the police and an ambulance were called to the scene and a witness told The Sun: 'He looked in a really bad state. He was hardly conscious. 'He was wearing the same clothes he was spotted wearing all the weekend.
'He was on his crutches but couldn’t stand up. He kept wandering in and out of the hotel and then he collapsed.
'There was hundreds of pounds worth in notes falling out of his pockets.
'He had two bottles of gin in his pockets. 'One was empty. He was close to vomiting, and kept asking for Sheryl.
'He was crying. It was awful and shocking to see him that way.' Gascoigne was refused alcohol at a local Sainsbury's store earlier in the day and posts on Twitter also suggest he was seen staggering around the Strand.
