quote:Modern Western culture is marked by social isolation, personal alienation, lack of community, disconnection from nature, and the loss of the sacred at the center of our lives. And the Western self is riddled with inner divisions—between self and other, individual and society, mind and body, spirit and nature, or the guilty ego and the harsh, punishing superego—that were mostly unknown in the ancient cultures in which the meditative traditions first arose.
quote:Western children often grow up without the support of what the psychologist D. W. Winnicott called a good “holding environment"—a context of love and belonging that contributes to a basic sense of confidence and to overall healthy psychological development. Children who grow up in fragmented families, glued to television sets transmitting images of a spiritually lost, narcissistic world, lack a meaningful context in which to situate their lives. As a result, many Westerners suffer from what the psychologist Harry Guntrip considered to be the emotional plague of modern civilization: ego weakness, the lack of a grounded sense of oneself and one’s place in the world that shows up as self-hatred, insecurity, and self-doubt.
Een flinke lap tekst in totaal, maar héél interessant.quote:Because their ego structure serves as a defense against inner fragmentation, many Western seekers find that they are not willing or able to let go of their ego defenses, despite all their spiritual practice and realization. On a deep, subconscious level, it is too threatening to let go of the little security that their shaky ego structures provide. This is why it can be helpful for Westerners to work on dismantling the defensive personality structure in a more gradual and deliberate way, through psychological inquiry—examining and dissolving false self-images, distorted projections, and habitual emotional reactions—and developing a fuller connection with themselves in the process. In this way, psychological work can serve another important function for Westerners: helping them to individuate by clearing up the emotional conflicts that prevent them from finding an inner core of authenticity.

in ieder geval, los daarvan..

• Controlling the body and the sensations
• Letting go of thoughts and clinging to past and future
• Dissolving the seeds of thought and attachment
• A state of concentration in which both rapture (joy/rapture/happiness) and non-rapture ceased to exist
The five doors of sense perception had completely closed, and a heart as still as a lake on a windless day
• The meditative state called the realm of limitless space, in which the mind becomes one with infinity, all material and visual phenomena cease to arise, and space is seen as the limitless source of all things.
• The realm of limitless consciousness. One’s own presence in every phenomenon in the universe
• The realm of no materiality (illusory nature of all phenomena). The state in which is seen that no phenomenon exists outside the mind
Considerable progress, but no liberation of suffering
• The state of neither perception nor non-perception: a state of consciousness in which both perception and non-perception are eliminated.
• (Asceticism: overcoming fear and pain)
Realizing that body and mind formed one reality which could not be separated
• Returning to one’s self: Abandoning all reliance on tradition and scripture in order to find the Way
• Mindfulness: completely present to the world of phenomena; feelings, thoughts, perceptions, bodily senses
The key to liberation would be to break through ignorance and to enter deeply into the heart of reality and attain a direct experience of it. Such knowledge would not be the knowledge of the intellect, but of direct experience.
Realizations
To accept life means to accept impermanence and emptiness of self.
The source of suffering is a false belief in permanence and the existence of separate selves.
Seeing this, one understands that there is neither birth nor death, production nor destruction, one nor many, inner nor outer, large nor small, impure nor pure. All such concepts are false distinctions created by the intellect. If one penetrates into the empty nature of all things, one will transcend all mental barriers, and be liberated from the cycle of suffering.
Liberation from all suffering and anxiety, resolving the fundamental problem of birth and death.
Oneness: Non-self, or anatman, was the nature of all existence.
The secret treasure of mindfulness—it leads to the realization of liberation and enlightenment. Life is illuminated by right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.
Get rid of the Meditator
One of the first aims of meditation is to get beyond the meditator, as contradictory as this sounds, as long as the meditator (or the ego/mind) is in control then there is very little possibility to move beyond the mind. The meditator is the one that is controlling, striving, manipulating, the efforder. In most forms of meditation the meditator is given something to do, to master a technique (of breathing, sitting, centering the mind) which the meditator loves because it then gets to remain in control. To do these techniques at the beginning of a session is fine, they have their purpose to gather attention in to the moment, but when we've gathered attention the invitation is to let go of whatever techniques were using. All the old ancient disciplines of meditation have their value, but what often happens is that people stay with the discipline, they end up watching and controlling their breath for many years but in the end spirituality is not about watching your breath but to wake up from the dream of seperateness to the truth of unity.
