So much cred for this amazing video! I never watch the ESC because its so glitzy and shallow. Take a look a the videos of other contestants. They are all trying to beat each other with flashy videos...Anouk uses the webcam of a laptop (!), one microphone and just delivers the most powerful performance of them all!

Sadly I don't think the song will go far in the contest, wrong ordience, but it will be played alot on the radio! Thank you Anouk!

Dimi: Sja, Anouk heeft dan ook een goede reputatie als het op ballades aankomt dus echt verrassend is het niet – al had ik haar even graag haar spreekwoordelijke spierballen horen rollen in een rocksong. Maar ik kan niet anders dan het roerend eens zijn met mijn medemusketier…over de gehele lijn. Ik dacht wel eerder aan Tim Burton, maar voor de rest heb ik amper iets toe te voegen aan de commentaar hierboven. Hoe dit in de smaak zal vallen hangt heel erg af van hoe dit op het podium zal worden neergezet. Voor mij, knoop dit goed in je oren daar in het Noorden, dé inzending om in het oog te houden. 18/20

Tim: Ze is nobody’s wife, waant zich al eens lost in this world en ze had ooit iets met ene Michel… Zie daar, drie goeie redenen om dit weergaloze topwijf te omarmen. Ik heb in de recente songfestivalgeschiedenis al gevloekt en geketterd toen bleek dat straffe artiesten plotsklaps afweken van hun gebruikelijke repertoire om te kunnen ‘verrassen’ op het songfestival. Het werden meestal onaangename verrassingen die ik als pure zelfverloochening beschouwde. Bij Anouk ligt het anders, ze wil dolgraag meedoen aan het Songfestival. Ze koos heel bewust voor dit nummer en leeft naar Malmö toe op haar geheel eigenzinnige manier. Het ‘wat als’-monstertje in m’n hoofd zal zich altijd op fluistertoon blijven afvragen hoe Anouk zou gescoord hebben met een knaller als ‘Girl’ of ‘Good God’. Tegelijkertijd bezorgt het feit dat geen enkele Vlaamse radiozender ‘Birds’ wil draaien me een licht ongemakkelijk gevoel. Ik erken het nochtans als een wondermooi wijsje dat trouwens meteen blijft hangen. Het is misschien geen plaat om grijs te draaien en neigt zo nu en dan naar een wat zeurderige toon, het is dikke vette klasse. Een vleugje Anastasia en Tim Burton-sfeer gaat er bij mij in als zoete koek. Dit is de enige inzending waarvan het me reuze hard benieuwt hoe het er in Malmö zal uitzien. Het vogeltje zelf is goed gestemd, hopelijk wordt het niet platgewalst door paradijselijke showvogels. Hup Holland, hup! 17/20

Admittedly, that is not always a good thing, but there is something very engaging about Anouk's voice and simple performing style.

The song's "Birds falling down from the rooftops / out of the sky like raindrops" seemed Mary Poppins-esque.

But there is a darker edge to this dreamy, moody song.

Anouk's voice is pure and genuine, its richness combining with the rising melody to hint at Adele in places. (Wouldn't it be good if we could get Adele to do Eurovision? She won James Bond an Oscar - surely she could win even Europe over to voting for the UK.)

This number is liable to mark a slowdown in pace on Eurovision night, but the lilting Viennese Waltz rhythm gives it a certain tempo.

Hopefully it will see pairs of ballroom dancers whirling around the stage in story-telling style. Strictly Come Dancing and Eurovision combined - glitterballs would surely explode.

Gustav Dahlander: A wrong lullaby that hopefully finally take the Netherlands to the finals again. But nothing I listen to at home.

If Netherlands does not make it to the Final with this entry, I could see the country withdrawing from next year's competition. I have to wonder if this may factor into the thought process of the juries. If a country sends in its biggest gun and still can't make it into the final after almost 10 years of trying, it is not so far-fetched for Netherlands to withdraw, regroup, and perhaps take a hiatus to focus on other projects.
