De fantastische nieuwe cd van The Flaming Lips. Ik heb hem donderdag gekocht en ik vind hem blij vlagen geniaal. Met name de tweede helft van de cd vind ik echt fantastisch. Nummers als In the morning of the magicans, Do you realize?? en All we have is now zijn wat mij betreft niet minder dan geniaal.
Het nummer Yosmimi battles the pink robots pt.1 vind ik dan weer wat minder in vergelijking met deze nummers, maar ook dat is nog steeds een zeer te genieten nummer.
Al met al is het gewoon een schitterende plaat en zeker een aanrader voor mensen die van een beetje experimentele/zweverige muziek (met goede melodiën) houden.
Voor mensen die de cd al hebben is onderstaand stuk wellicht leuk (track-by-track bespreking van de cd door een van de mensen uit de band:)

5. "In The Morning Of The Magicians" - This questions the delicate balance of emotional dimensions that constitute love - is it a concept - is it real - what is love?? If a person believes they are loved, either by another person, by God or an animal or even by a machine, they are loved - what is the proof??
6. "Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell" - To derive one's happiness from only specific moments in time is to miss out on the cosmic accident that is all of life's moments...
7. "Are You A Hypnotist?" - Is hypnotism something that is done to you?? Or do you do it to yourself??
8. "It's Summertime - Throbbing Orange Pallbearers" - Intended as a song of encouragement to the grieving sisters of a Japanese girl who suddenly became ill and died in the late spring of 2000. But, I think in the end it was a song of encouragement to myself...
9. "Do You Realize??" - Whenever I analyze the scientific realities of what it means to be living here on Earth - in this galaxy - spinning around the sun - flying through space - a terror shock seizes me!!! I'm reminded once again of how precarious our whole existence is...
10. "All We Have Is Now" - The story of a man who glimpses himself through some rip in the fabric of time and space - at first his future-self is thought to be some eccentric old man - at last he realizes it was himself reporting from some distant tomorrow.
11. "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon - Utopia Planitia" - Thought of as an ending of a fantastical adventure, an evening ride over the city - serene and exultant.

Moet wel eerlijk toegeven dat de eerste single (Do you realize??) wat aan de drukke, bijna overgeproduceerde kant is. Geen slecht nummer, maar er staan betere nummers op de CD.

In het het nummer daarna (All we have is now) kan je in ieder geval weer even heerlijk bijkomen.
Zelf ben ik over track 2 en 3 (de Yoshimi tracks) nog niet onverdeeld positief. Maar dat zijn dan ook echt de enige tracks die ik iets minder vind. En iets minder betekent in dit geval nog heel erg luisterbaar.
Had trouwens de review bij Pitchfork Media gelezen over deze CD, en die vonden weer juist dat het tweede deel van de CD minder was. Ach ja, ieder z'n smaak. Ik zal morgen wat meer moeite doen voor dit topic, dan heb ik wellicht ook meer te melden, maar nu is het bedtijd.

Pitchfork is overigens een redelijk strenge reviewsite, waarbij een CD, als een reviewer hem niet aanstaat, echt pijnlijk de grond ingestampt wordt. En soms slaan de reviews ook helemaal nergens op, zie de review voor Tool's Lateralus, die een 1,9 op 10 (!) kreeg, terwijl de review zelf daar helemaal geen aanleiding voor gaf. En vaak worden te pas en te onpas bepaalde groepen grondig de grond ingestampt, puur en alleen omdat die ene reviewer het maar niks vindt. Heb ook wel regelmatig van die momenten dat je pissig wordt over een review, maar aan de andere kant, dat is wellicht ook precies wat de reviewer bereiken wil. Best amusante site, toch, hetzij nog niet volledig genoeg.

). Dit opvallende nieuws stond vanochtend op Pitchfork. Zowel het feit dat ze in Top of the Pops optreden als dat ze Justin Timberlake hadden uitgenodigd om mee te "jammen" is wel verrassend te noemen. Maar wel grappig om te lezen. quote:

As already reported by everyfuckingbody else (goddamn these weekend breaks), Timberlake twiddled the four-string while dressed in typical Lips gear-- which is to say, a dolphin suit-- only to de-mask himself and reveal his true identity to a presumably stunned and fainting audience. "Oh my shit, it's fuckin'... it's fuckin'..." exclaimed one bedazzled fan, while others simply mistook Coyne for Joey Fatone. All this isn't, well, completely out of the blue, sort of, since the Lips have already shown a devotion to today's hottest hits with their cover of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" on their promo-only live radio sessions CD, Yoshimi Wins.
What we wanna know is, does Timberlake even know who these guys are? And will they soon return the favor, filling in for Timbaland on "insidious rap" on his next album? We can totally hear it: "Ungh, ungh, evraone ya know, ungh, someday will die/ Ungh, ungh, evraone ya know, ungh, freakyfreakyfreaky." Well, it's better when you imagine Wayne saying it.
Timberlake, of course, is just the latest in a string of head-scratching (Ted Danson, Badly Drawn Boy, Ash's Tim Wheeler, that Blue's Clues goon) and not so head-scratching (Beck, Beth Orton, and Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys) collaborators the Lips have recently hooked up with. Who's next? We don't know, but as they've already proven, these guys could have pretty much anything up their sleeves. A System of a Down "Is It Gettin' Heavy" remix? Nobody says no to Serj. A partnership with Ron Pearlman to form the world's first-ever Man Band? It's not out of the question! A Chili's babyback ribs duet with the Backstreet Boys? Uh, don't press your luck. Drums.

Nou, dat concert was dus wel erg de moeie waard Nooit geweten dat mnensen in dierenpakken, handpoppen, stroboscopen, confetti, rondstuiterende ballonnen en de teletubbies zo goed samen gaan.

Ik had op Internet al gelezen hoe de show er uit zou gaan zien, maar ik was toch nog verrast hoe het er allemaal uitzag. Echt heel leuk gedaan. Ik heb erg gelachen om de olifant. Achter ons stonden enkele mensen die vonden dat de olifant zich wat teveel verschool dus regelmatig waren er kreten te horen als ' We love the elephant!' en ' We need more elephant!'.
Natuurlijk kan de zanger van Flaming Lips niet echt zingen, maar dat wisten we al dus dat was niet storend. nee, ik heb me erg vermaakt en het was een leuke avond en zeer zeker mijn geld waard.
Ik was btw die Jarige Justin Echt geweldig... heb nooit zo genoten

Dat geroep om die olifant was idd erg grappig, vooral toen een van de andere beesten (ik geloof de kip) de olifant aan haar slurf naar voren trok
Ik stond btw op het balkon helemaal vooraan, zo had ik wel een mooi uitzicht op alles wat er op het podium gebeurde (en dat was nogal wat).
En wat een zure recensie in het parool vandaag, de recensent was zeker met zn verkeerde been uit bed gestapt ofzo.
