Vliegbasis RAF Brize Norton was tot 2006 in gebruik als basis waar gesneuvelde Britse militairen het land weer in kwamen. Door een grootschalige verbouwing werd die taak tijdelijk, t/m 2011, overgedragen aan vliegbasis RAF Lyneham.
De gesneuvelden werden gedurende die periode, dwars door het centrum van Wootton Bassett, naar het mortuarium in Oxford gebracht.
Tijdens één van de eerste transporten liepen een aantal leden van The British Royal Legion langs de route en brachten, gewoonte getrouw, de militaire groet naar de voorbij rijdende lijkwagen.
Toen zij later hoorden dat het een gesneuvelde militair betrof namen zij contact op met RAF Lyneham met het verzoek hen te waarschuwen als dit nogmaals mocht gebeuren.
Dit was het begin van een grootschalig, en helaas vaak voorkomend, betonen van respect. Tijdens de latere repatriëringen groeide het aantal aanwezigen uit tot duizenden.
Wootton Bassett bleef dit respect tonen tot in 2011, het moment dat RAF Brize Norton de taak van RAF Lyneham weer overnam.
Als "beloning" kreeg de stad van de Britse Koningin de titel "Royal". Dit als derde stad in Groot Brittanië.

WOOTTON BASSETT ROCKS!
Represent the extraordinary community of Royal Wootton Bassett who came together over 5 months in 2011 to re-record the classic Green Day track, "Wake Me Up When September Ends" from their American Idiot album, rated the best album of the decade by Rolling Stone. The track, features over 250 people of the general public singing, with a main group of 12, recorded at Peter Gabriels Real World Studios and mastered at the famous Abbey Road Studios.
The music video features over 1,000 people in a technically challenging 'one-shot' take, mastered to cinematic quality by Dolby Laboratories. The music video captures the spirit of Royal Wootton Bassett and its community and although the repatriations have now moved on, it's a way the community can still show their support for the families of the bereaved.
Wootton Bassett Rocks! are proud to support these four charities: The Royal British Legion; Combat Stress; The Undentable Trust and Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Families Association (SSAFA).
The aim of Wootton Bassett Rocks! is to raise £1 million for military charities.
